アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビン（1927～1994）とジョアン・ジルベルト（1931～2019）。この2人が1950年代、ブラジルのリオデジャネイロで出会わなければ、ボサノヴァの名で呼ばれ世界中を魅了することとなる音楽は、生まれなかったと思う。
ジョアンが編み出した、サンバのリズムをギター１本で表現し、耳元で囁きかけるように繊細に歌う独創的な表現を聴いて脳内に創作のスイッチが入ったジョビンは、シンプルなメロディーと高度なハーモニーに根ざした曲を次々に作ってジョアンに提供した。ここにボサノヴァの本質がある。
そしてボサノヴァは、リオから海外へと羽ばたいた。ジョビンが準主役で参加した、スタン・ゲッツとジョアンの共演盤『Getz/Gilberto』がニューヨークで録音されたのが1963年。その2カ月後、ジョビンは初リーダー作『The Composer of Desafinado,Plays』をニューヨークで録音した。自作の歌曲をピアノとギターで演奏したインストゥルメンタルのアルバムで、オーケストラの編曲と指揮をつとめたのが、クラウス・オガーマン（1930～2016）だった。
ドイツ人のオガーマンはクラシックを学びジャズにも精通、1959年に渡米した。クラシックの素養を備えたジョビンの音楽に惚れこみ、またジョビンもオガーマンの音楽性に惚れこみ、その後も多くのリーダー作、そしてフランク・シナトラとの共演盤（1967年）でオガーマンと組んできた。クラシック、ジャズ、ポップス、映画音楽など多岐にわたったオガーマンの仕事の中でも、ジョビンとのコラボレーションは代表に挙げられる。
いっぽう、ジョアンは1977年、オガーマンの編曲・指揮によるアルバム『AMOROSO』を発表した。プロデューサーの一人がトミー・リピューマ、エンジニアがアル・シュミット。この2人にオガーマンを加えたトリオはジョージ・ベンソンの『ブリージン』（76年）やマイケル・フランクスの『スリーピング・ジプシー』（77年）を手がけたチームでもある。私事になるが当時、20代前半だった僕は、この２枚と『AMOROSO』を、若者が背伸びして大人ぶる感覚で聴き親しんでいた。
『AMOROSO』はA面が、サンバの古典のほか英語、イタリア語、スペイン語で歌う各国の曲。B面がジョビンの楽曲。他のジョアンのアルバムと比べコンセプチュアルな選曲だ。
その中の1曲が「WAVE」で、ジョビンが1967年のリーダー作のタイトル曲として、オガーマン編曲・指揮のオーケストラをバックに、インストゥルメンタルで録音した。ジョアンは『AMOROSO』で歌曲として録音。
この映像の収録曲を紹介していこう。
「WAVE」は、「RIO ⇄ TOKYO GORO ITO BOSSA NOVA EXPERIMENT～dedicate to João Gilberto & Antônio Carlos Jobim」では『AMOROSO』でのオガーマンの編曲をインスピレーション源として、伊藤ゴローが新たにオーケストラを編曲した。
「三月の水」（「三月の雨」の邦題もある）はジョビンが作詞作曲。南半球のブラジルでは夏の終わりにあたる三月の風景を詩情豊かに描いた、エコロジスト・ジョビンを象徴する名曲で、ジョアンが録音したヴァージョンも究極の名演として知られている。ここでは、ジョビンが晩年の約10年間を共に過ごしたバンド、バンダ・ノヴァのメンバーだったジャキス・モレレンバウム（チェロ）とパウラ・モレレンバウム（コーラス）の夫妻と共演。パウラが歌っている場所はリオのジャルヂン・ボタニコ（植物園）で、生前のジョビンが愛した巨木の前に立つシーンもある。
「AMOROZSOFIA」は伊藤ゴローのオリジナル曲。タイトルは造語で、"愛をこめた" を意味するAMOROSOと、哲学を意味するFILOSOFIA。このふたつのポルトガル語を掛け合わせたそうだ。
そして最後は、ジョアンの2006年来日公演のBlu-rayディスク『ジョアン・ジルベルト・ライヴ・イン・トーキョー』に収録されたジョアンのオリジナル曲「BIM BOM」、その音声に伊藤ゴローがオーケストラの編曲を施しオーバーダビングした、奇跡のヴァーチャル共演だ。
ボサノヴァの二大クリエイター、アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンとジョアン・ジルベルト、そして2人の音楽に瀟洒な装飾を加えたクラウス・オガーマンへの、愛をこめた音楽のギフトが、天国の彼らのもとに届いたことだろう。

Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927 - 1994) and João Gilberto (1931 - 2019). If they hadn't met in Rio in the 1950s, the music that became known as bossa nova and fascinated the world would never have been born.
Hearing João's original expression of samba rhythms expressed with a guitar and sung delicately as if whispering into our ears, Jobim's brain was turned on to creativity, and he wrote and provided João with a series of songs rooted in simple melodies and sophisticated harmonies. This is where the essence of bossa nova lies.
And bossa nova spread its wings from Rio to overseas. In 1963, "Getz/Gilberto," a joint recording by Stan Getz and João. Two months later, Jobim recorded his first leader work, “The Composer of Desafinado, Plays”, in New York. It was an instrumental album of his own songs performed on piano and guitar, with orchestral arrangements and conducting by Claus Ogerman (1930-2016).
A German by birth, Ogerman studied classical music and was well versed in jazz before moving to the United States in 1959. He fell in love with Jobim's classical background, and Jobim fell in love with Ogerman's musicianship, and have since worked together on a number of albums and a 1967 recording with Frank Sinatra.
While, João released the album "AMOROSO" in 1977, which was arranged and conducted by Ogerman. One of the producers was Tommy LiPuma, and the engineer was Al Schmidt. The trio of these two plus Ogerman was also the team that produced George Benson's "Breezing" (1976) and Michael Franks' "Sleeping Gypsy" (1977).
Let me introduce the songs in this video.
In "WAVE" Goro used Ogerman's arrangement for "AMOROSO" as inspiration for his new orchestral arrangement. “Water in March" was composed by Jobim. Here, the song is joined by Jaques and Paula Morelenbaum, who were members of Banda Nova, with whom Jobim spent about ten years toward the end of his life. "AMOROZSOFIA" is an original song by Goro. The title was coined from two Portuguese words, AMOROSO, meaning "with love," and FILOSOFIA, meaning "philosophy. Last song was a miraculous virtual collaboration of Goro's orchestral arrangement and overdubbing on João Gilberto's original song "BIM BOM," recorded on the Blu-ray disc "João Gilberto Live in Tokyo" from his 2006 concert in Japan.
The two great creators of bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, and Claus Ogerman, who added elegant embellishments to their music, will have received their gift of music with love in heaven.
