- This bow really rocks!
Best bow of the three I have tested from AF recently (at least for me)
Takedown, just a bit added weight, no flex in the handle which minimises the vibration.
No learning curve, instant good results. I like this bow a lot!

MY OWN EXPERIENCE MATCHED YOUR OWN...
When MY 40# AF Archery Takedown Tatar bow came, I FELL IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT TOO !
And even using my own shooting method and stringwalking method, the NARROW ARROW PASS surprised me at how ACCURATE it was !
When you "petted" your own bow - I KNEW EXACTLY HOW YOU WERE FEELING ;-)
Nice video !

I'm late to this party and I only started shooting thumb draw last year but this bow was immediately intuitive to me. I found the handle a bit thick so I removed the OEM version and installed my own ray skin and thin rawhide custom fit and now it's basically a part of my body. I was out roaming last weekend with this bow and I hit a spent 12 guage shotgun shell on a stick at 17 yards. Bragging, I know but the bow made that happen. No regrets, AF makes good stuff.
AF is really stepping up their game. However those who order 45-50 lb takedown versions should be very careful drawing over 30 inches. Due to the break and non-bending metal construction in the handle, there is a lot of stress on the lamination around the handle area. My 50lb Sicai takedown delaminated there after 1 week. AF refunded me, no questions asked, but shipping was free then. I hope mine was a singular example. Others who have tried AF high poundage takedowns should chime in here. Also please use a stringer on these if you have not mastered the step through method yet. Any twists will weaken the handle joint as well.
I recently bought a 50lb take down that I should have in hand within a few days. I'll report back here if there are any issues, I plan on using it for mule deer or black bear. The seasons in my area is on now, for the next couple months.
@@traviskay6683
any update? Just received my 45 pound, I'm hesitant on using it a lot.
@@tonydillinger2553 so far so good. My draw is only 31 and more like 29 by conventional standards. No problems yet but haven't seen much use. I'm still planning to use it on a hunt later in the month or November, but it may be cold enough for me to switch to rifle. I'm not sure what it will be like in the cold.
@@traviskay6683 Any updates? Also what did shipping cost you on this? I'm in Montana so trying to get a feel for what shipping would be.
Io ho la versione da 40 lb da due mesi ed è tutto ok.
I killed a doe with this bow yesterday. Complete pass through woth a 100 grain 3 blade. Ran for 6 seconds. 50 yards and she was mine. I love this bow. Thank you for this video. Its the reason I bought this bow. 😁😁👌👌👌👌❤
I bought an AF bow based upon your reviews. Unfortunately no string was included. AF refused to ship me one, stating shipping cost! Had to make my own string. There are no traditional archery shops in my area anymore. So boo to AF on customer service!! Like the bow, but be careful of dealing with Chinese marketers!
Hope AF reads this!
That's crazy cuz I received mine in a week and a half and he wanted me to tell him when I got it (there was paper issues)
@@Daylon91 What can I say?
Just sent my order in :) You have the best reviews and info on horsebows - keep it up! Hopefully more people see your content and subscribe!
Very nice review, thank you. I was looking for a good take down, and this looks perfect, I ordered one right away.
Man, another great bow. Loved this review as well. Thank you, Armin.
The best beginning of the week - seeing Armin (and Kitty) being so excited and happy about a bow 🤟🏹 And what a perfect timing since I was looking for a good takedown to drag along while traveling 🤩 Yessss!!!
That’s a great looking bow love the take down aspect thank ya sir Af archer dose have some nice bows 👍🏼🏹🇺🇸
THANK YOU FOR SUCH GREAT REVIEWS.
Thanks again for this test, as usual all the information is there! I must have watched the video at least 20 times.
The bow looks really great. I was able to test the 175$ version, so I ordered the 269$ version, considering your comparison I can't wait to receive it. It should arrive tomorrow!
Thanks again for your work!
What a lovely bow- I like tartar designs and this is in take down- handy for trips away from home. Very nice curves and the finish looks great. You obviously enjoyed shooting it and that counts for a lot given the number of bows that pass through your hands.
Just received this bow, and wow...
It's super dank!!! Only been shooting thumb draw for about a month, and was able to get a good group right off the bat... I hope the take down version lasts a long time. God it in 45 pound draw weight, probably should have got little less so I can shoot for a lot longer time.
Just received my 45# @28 today, Craftsmanship is exceptional. Arrow hits where you aim it. Very smooth draw cycle, minimal hand shock. Now to the range!
An informative and entertaining review as always! I love the tartar design. Now is down to which manufacturer and one piece or two. Still not sold
on AF - going to wait and see how the fixation joint holds up over time
Another beautiful bow by AF archery and my favorite design. AF has really stepped up there game in these last few reviews. Alibow better watch out there quality and craftsmanship have been top-notch in the last few years compared to the budget bows they started with. After sale service seems great too. Thanks for these last few reviews my friend this company is making its mark.
Wow! Very nice review. This one really has my interest. Thanks.
Thank you, I was looking for a short sweet take down recurve bow 🎯.
Armin, thanks for all of your contributions to the spread of archery!
I just got my Tatar Take-down on your kind advice. 35#, new design. It's an absolute dream to shoot! I can't say enough positive about it.
It took only a week (to west coast, US), and their shipping is down to $50 now. I think they watch your reviews... packaging was minimal plastic, and included an information pamphlet.
Thank you, sir!
Great Review.
Wonder how they centre the connecting rod, amazing stuff?
Beauty Armin, We live in a great time nomatter.
As always great review
Great review, hope they are paying Armin commission, I ordered mine this weekend, FREE SHIPPING and 10% off with ARMIN10, but still had to pay $50 for shipping on 12 arrows and a thumb ring. To be honest if the bow hadn't been free shipping I would have gone for one of the Alibow take downs, but with the free shipping I just couldn't resist, especially with such a good review from the master. I'm a bit worried that I ordered 35# as a complete nube, but i cannot afford to buy a 20# and a 45# later so I just hope I haven't shot myself in the foot. Hopefully I will adapt.
Dopo questa ottima recensione, ho comprato due mesi fa questo arco nella versione più costosa in frassino in 40 lb, lo trovo stupendo con un’esperienza di tiro veramente ottima, fino ad ora nessun problema. Arco eccezionale.
Because of this review I got the 45 breakdown Tatar bow, I really dig this bow. It feels like a superhero bow. :)
Hope there is a big tatar bow review. If I was close I'd lend ya my fibreglass nomad even though it's a sorta short tatar and 50# at 28. I might be ordering Arif Budimens mini Turkish for fun. Heavier draw weights seem a lot more like training and u cant shoot them all day with the same amount of accuracy and consistency as when u started shootin
I have one of those and I'm in love with it. AF archery has greatly improved.
My 45lb Tatar from AF measured at 50lbs.... They are a bit mass produced by hand... But also the temperatures make the materials stiffer or looser...
Great bow and nice video
Hi Armin, Thank you for the review. I liked the way you describe this bow. I ordered one 2 weeks ago and awaiting shipment. Thank you for the 10% off code. They now charge $50 for shipping.
Great and good to know
Coffee and bows. Best way to wake up!
Yes, Tatar is a nice design!
I got mine today, coming from a Snake 50'' 20# that I bought as a trainer alongside a classic recurve. I got the takedown version because I go to the shooting range on a bicycle, and wanted a bow that doesn't stick out of my bag like a giant hook.
I realize the shelf of the Snake really helps to control the arrow. That is one aspect I did not have to keep in mind when shooting. I will have to learn this with the Tatar.
I'm surprised how stiff the Snake is compared to the Tatar at a 29''-ish draw: the Snake is reaching its limits, while the Tatar is right in its comfort zone. I might regret in the future not buying the 25# version.
I shot three arrows bare-hand, and got a shallow cut as a welcoming gift on my right index (I'm left-handed): I need to get a glove or something, tho I got used to hold the Snake bare-handed and liked the feeling and the feedback I got.
Regarding the Tatar, the varnish of the clear version looks like caramel. Maybe I would have prefered it in black: photographs are misleading.
Anyway, I'm really happy and hope I can improve enough to pass my "black arrow*" with the Tatar.

Beautiful bow.nice to have.
Armin, I am very close in buying this bow. I already have the same bow but not take-down (love it). Do you think it is worth it? When would I use it? When would you use it? Can you change out the staves if you want a change the weight. Love your videos...
Really enjoy your reviews and it is getting me back into archery. And if you get time, could you do a short film on shooting a Yumi bow and compare it your fav shooting style and explain the difference.
there is already a video in which he reviews yuumi kind of bows by sarmat archery. you can search on his channel for it :)
Great review of a great bow. I have ordered the same bow and after seeing this review, I am looking forward a bit extra. - Btw, is it common with AF arcs that the Ibs can vary as with this one does?
Can happen yes
Armin, came across your channel once I started looking for a Turkish Style Bow. Love all of your videos. Thank you for them. Since I like the takedown aspect of it I wanted to ask if you would recommend this one here (Tatar Takedown) ahead of the Turkish Takedown Bow by Alibow and what draw weight would you recommend? Best of luck with your channel.
Both great, Tatar and Turkish have a bit different design. But I am sure that you can get Alibow Tatar in takedown too
Armin, would you say this bow is ok to shoot in the rain? Would you be worried about it if it were wet for say 24 hours? It seems like the glass covers all the exposed wood, but I'm still a bit nervous to get it wet.
Nice seeing a review of a take-down horsebow, and that tatar is really really pretty.
If you could choose, would you like a take down turkish or Kheshig more?
kheshig is kheshig, but if I would need a takedown for travel, this one :)
I don't know much about traditional bows or horse bows, so... I notice you shoot right handed and shoot off of the right side of the bow. Does this help with the sight picture when drawing, or is this just how a horse bow is shot? Also, do you have to use a thumb ring to shoot this or can you use split finger or three under draw with this bow? Thanks for a great video, Daniel
Unfortunately the AF Tatar isn’t made with the great Bear Paw fiberglass. I asked and got that response today. Perhaps they went with a more economical version since the video was made.
anyone have update if the takedown version is holding up good, mine should be showing up in a week or so..... can't wait.
This baby is only $175.00 USD in Oak and black but the code is only available on the ash model. Been looking for a take down for a great price and this looks like the ticket. Thanks For the review
The one with bearpaw glass is more expensive
I've heard from bowyers that for some reason, composite bows laminate better to an ash core than to other kinds of wood. Apparently it's something to do with the texture of the wood giving more surface area for the epoxy to bind to.
@@Marmocet ash has its benefits, yes
Is this. Better than the keshig
Merci, il est vraiment très beau !

Hey Armin and everyone else here.😊🏹
Update of an Update, I’m sorry but I couldn’t help my self. I just received my Takedown Tatar Bow from AF. I haven’t shot it yet but it’s beautiful. I got the black one for alittle less money. It’s exactly as you said Armin. The Black one has ray skin for the arrow pass and the plastic string grooves on the limbs. It’s so light in hand. Can’t wait to shoot it on my next day off. Thank you for your review Armin it helped a lot in my decision. Also got Vermil V Nocks. I’m so excited! Thank you again.
Update - I found your video about poundage and will be getting the 30 pound. New question however, I found the one piece for 149USD on Amazon. Still AF Archery. Should I get that one or spend the extra money and get it directly from AF Archery in the new takedown version? As always I love your videos, thank you.
I am purchasing my self another traditional bow. While I love the modern takedown bow it turned out I purchased too high a poundage, 40 pounds. I’ve been to my local archery shop with a friend and found that 30 or 35 pounds is better, but that was considering the style of bow that I already have. After doing more research than I did before I’ve found that I would prefer the Tatar bow instead. This is all new to me, I’ve always shot a compound bow but am finding it unfulfilling. I have a 27 to 28” draw and can shoot my 40# but not as well as I’d like as I tend to shake at full draw. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I don’t want to end up in the same situation.
Thank You for reading. Also, as always Armin your videos are an inspiration to me.
Hi Ashley. Wherever you can get your hands on the bow the cheapest I would say :) enjoy shooting
Regarding poundage I would go with 30. Get the technique right with a low poundage and then go higher.
@@ArminHirmer thank you, yes I will order the 30 pound. I havnt decided yet but I think I might get the takedown in black, the color just speaks to me🏹😊
As much as I love these reviews, it just gets harder and harder to choose! I'm looking at a 35# laminated bow, but which one? Tending towards the Kheshig, but the AF bows are really nice too! Not to mention the Xuanwu, Qinghai and Tartar bows from Alibow.
I know I know :) first choose your max draw length and then simply the design
I've been looking for a takedown horsebow for the past few months, and have actually watched your review of the Turkish takedown from Alibow. Would you recommend this over that bow?
Looking to get bamboo arrows - but just for target shooting, nothing fancy.
I like that the handle is the same size as the non takedown on AF
Any good for hunting?
Hi , armin great video , could you please make a video on how to hold arrows in you bow hand and drawing hand
thanks, I did some, but I might do an update
Shooting from horseback, would you still prefer this one over the horsebow from AF that you tested earlier?
Yes
Possible to review another bow from AF , I'm wanted to know how it perform. It call zhu ran "朱然" .
maybe if somebody sends it to me, its a beautiful bow. would like to test it
AF archery mi ha mandato subito un nuovo arco, che uso da mesi con grande soddisfazione e nessun problema.
Purtroppo anche il mio arco af tartar take down, da 40 libbre si è rotto, ho scritto ad af Archery, aspetto risposta.

Wondering how the laminated bows hold up in the US Southern states. It's a hot, humid environment for a lot of the year.
Tricky, most of them will work but one has to take care while stringing, not drawing to the limit...
I bought this bow # 35 @ 28 "and got a # 30 @ 28". At 32 "it has 40 pounds. If you want # 45 at 32", you better order a # 40 @ 28 ".
I've shot this bow for a year now. I would not recommend drawing this bow to 32", the glass laminate was beginning to become brittle. I would also advise against fastflight material with this bow and maintain a minimum arrow weight of 9 - 10 gpp.
I got a one piece 50 ib and it was 49. I've been blessed with all my bows from manufacturers is almost always bang on
I can't find any information on quality bows that are in the 60-80lbs weight. Have you done any reviews of them? Any advice?

@@ArminHirmer Much appreciated!
What is the chance that after numerous takedowns the limb will rotate? I personally am not keen to takedowns, however, this one peaks my interest.
as long as the inserts are fixed, I see no problem

What the length like compared to others Tatar bows
Comparison is planned
Just bought 2... one for brother and other myself. This review gave me more confidence it was a worth while investment for a bsaci recurve. Thanks for your due diligence
Tatar AF Or Tatar Alibow? I was thinking of having a laminate bow.
The new one from Alibow is on the way. Then comparison
@@ArminHirmer does that mean a new revision of the Tatar with the syntactic foams Alibow is adding to the newer models? If so, and pending your review, I suspect I have chosen my new bow.
I bought a 35 lb horse bow recently but I have no idea what kind of arrows to get. Can someone let me know how to find the right ones.
depends what you want to shoot and what your max draw is. wood, carbon.... many options
Correct me if I'm wrong! First contact your bow's manufacturer to see if they have a recommended weight, but if they don't, work out your most comfortable draw length, probably about 30~32 inches.
Draw your bow to that length and measure its # at that draw length.
Rule of thumb is to start with arrows that would be 10 grains per pound. (Weigh the entire arrow)
Get the arrow at that weight that is the same length as your draw (plus a little) from nock to where the end of the shaft meets the head.
Test and evaluate. Don't be a dummy like me and trust the online seller who sold me arrows without a front of center point.
There's a diminishing return when it comes to poundage and arrow speed. To deal with the strength of the bow, you'll need heavier arrows, so just increasing the draw weight won't necessarily equate to a faster flight speed.
Hope it helps
I recognised, that you often do not care, where the index fletching is pointing. I always learned it has to point away from the bow, how come?
You are right, I don't care. I did some videos about it. It makes no difference in how I shoot
Probably shooting with tougher vanes off a type off shelf will deflect the arrow so they figured the same with actual fletchings lmao 🤣
Hi,
I realy love your chanel, My wife is interested in archery. I am thinking of surprice her with this bow as a present. She says that her drawweight is 20. What arrows does she need? What do i need tothink about.
Carbon 800 spine
Armin Hirmer Thank you so very much.
It looks like I'm going to have to have a closer look at the shorter asiatic bows... and get better finger protection.
You need protection for the drawing fingers. Keeping the arrow from hitting the bow hand or thumb is not hard. I am a beginner and so are my kids and it has not been a problem... String slap on the arm, happens sometimes... Wearing out fingers that do the drawing, happens all the time... Arrow hitting the bow hand has happened exactly once to me and once to one of my kids... nock the arrow slightly up like Armin recommends, do the simple khatra, and there is no problem.
What are best arrows for 45 pound at 27/28, for this bow?
Nice stiff carbon 400 spine
@@ArminHirmer
What about wood arrows at 29"
for 45 pound Take down tatar bow. Best weight to not damage bow
@@ArminHirmer
the 400 spines 29 inch I have weigh 286 grain without tip, with a 145 grain tip they weigh 28 grams, AF says I should get 400-450 spine no less that 30 grams, my draw length is 27 with Hungarian, should I just use longer arrows to get to 30 grams to not damage bow?
@@tonydillinger2553 if you multiply 45# with 0.6 it is 27g. the bow has 45#@28" I guess and you draw 27", so you should be fine with these arrows

@@N0rnagest I ordered mine from Alibow and it did take a long time to arrive (arrived mid pandemic). So it should arrive eventually.
Armin. I really appreciate your bow reviews, and all of the instruction that you provide has been tremendously helpful for me. I am just beginning to try thumb release with the inexpensive Alibow fiberglass Tatar as you recommended some time ago. However, in my humble opinion, your bow reviews are becoming too compressed. By that I mean that all of the bow scores are too close. So many bows end up with the same score. In addition, in this review and the recent review of the Kheshig you mentioned that one category could receive a score of 6, which is not available in your current system and which demonstrates the compression problem. You have also mentioned scores of 4-1/2 points sometimes for bows, which you typically round up to 5 points. Again, evidence of the compression. If you change your rating system to 10 points per category rather than 5 points, then you could show more separation between the bows. Bows that are really great would stand out with higher scores. Also, small defects, like the separated serving on this one, could be accounted for rather than simply being ignored. I hope you will consider my idea.
yeah I did not want to overcomplicate it :) I might change it in the future
