Thank you for sharing the "Me Chinese" bonus. I'm so used to telling this story. I am second generation Chinese-American. I know enough to order a nice meal and then have that blank stare when the server says something back in Chinese. As a kid, my parents asked me if I wanted to attend Chinese School on Saturday, of course "No", and as a kid my Dad didn't make it past the 4th grade so it wasn't an issue. In Junior high school, only Mandarin is offered, and since my family spoke Cantonese, I chose Spanish.

I definitely can relate to your limited Cantonese vocabulary. Like you, I can order some of the food menu since I am a 3rd generation Chinese, but can't dialogue with a full conversation without stumbling. Glad to see that Dim Sum Cafe located way out of the strip has survived since I've visited Vegas 6 years ago. Loved your down to earth comments and that dim sum are ordered off the menu rather than the rolling carts at some places.

Danny , don't feel bad. I'm exactly like you on the West Coast....San Francisco and it's exactly the same story . oh I dont feel bad at all, not one itty bit. Speaking a language is a skill, I dont need to spend my time developing skills to levels that I do not need... who should feel bad are people who DO NOT develop skills to a level where THEY NEED THEM!!!! Things to learn will always be there in this world, possibly billions of things available to learn, there is just no point in learning things that have no point to how you be livin your life... but it is super important to learn the things that are necessary to how you be livin..

I have not had Dim Sum since I lived in San Francisco attending college from 1970 to 1976. We ate all around San Francisco Chinatown. It was cheap in those days for college students. It's time to try it again. Thanks !!

Great video as usual. Me too, ABC third generation. I know enough Cantonese basics but no real modern terms. Grew up in SF close to chinatown and family could speak Cantonese but mostly Engish.
Love to see you eat the same dishes at each Dim Sum place this way you can judge the quality of Dim Sum. For me it is Wonton Soup. I know how to make it perfectly and too often in restaurants dumb it down and not use the toasted fish in the broth, or the wonton filling is not freshly make the same day.
Thanks for all your work in the videos, have enjoyed them and your humor very muc

My wife is in the same boat.
She grew up in San Francisco and spoke Cantonese at home.
But according to her: It's 'baby' Cantonese.
When she worked with folks from Hong-Kong
it became very apparent she didn't 'fit in' .... conversationally.
    These were college-educated Hong Kong'ers.
90% of the conversational flew above her head.

Aloha Danny, jus found yur vids. You are so entertaining! U so funny! I can relate to you so much. I like your humor & expressions. I'll check your places out when I go to Vegas. If you ever come to Honolulu I'll show you the best dim sum places as well as the many other foodie places here. I used to do walking tours of Chinatown before Covid for Airbnb. Honolulu is the Asian foodie capital of the world! Most of our early Chinese ancestry to Hawaii in the early1900s came from Chung San (Zhongshan/Xiangshan) as laborers in the pineapple & sugar cane fields, where dim sum came from. Keep up the good work & looking forward to more of your adventures.

Hello Mr Medic, wondering if you're interested in ever learning more Chinese. There's an amazing young man, Xiaman, who has a UA-cam channel, and now he teaches it. Bwah Hah Hah !! I thought that might been the case after watching a few of your vids. Especially the one where you commented that you were "faking it" listening to the wait staff talking to you. Even though you don't "speak" Chinese I've learned a few things watching UR vids 'cause a couple dim sum items U prefer are my favorite as well. Now I know how to ask for them. BTW I'm 3rd Gen. Japanese Amer. so the staff rarely has no problem guessing I'm not "one of them" LOL. BUT when I was in Japan many years ago I had to learn how to explain to the people there why I "look like a duck but don't talk like one". B4 I had a chance to explain myself many local there thought I was either being a snob for not speaking to them or I was intellectually challenged !!
LOL Sometimes even after I explained why I don't speak Japanese, they still didn't get it ! I thought that for an intellectual people they weren't very "worldly" if U know what I mean. Keep making UR vids. I didn't enjoy them at first but they kinda grew on me LOL.

As an American, I don't understand exactly what someone could mean when they say they speak Chinese. The default for Chinese is Mandarin, right? But you speak only Cantonese, right? And my understanding is that if you speak Canto, you would be able to understand Mandarin about as well as me and vice versa. Is that right? And there are so many dialects and accents in China, it can't be uncommon for Chinese people to have difficulty understanding each other. Right?

@@dannythemedic , that's interesting. There must be some cultural and political context that is hard for me to understand. Doesn't the Chinese (mainland) government declare Mandarin is the only official language?
4.5% of Chinese speak Cantonese as their first language. 13% of Americans speak Spanish as their first language. Yet, if someone said they speak "American," I don't think of Spanish.
Is your position influenced by being from Hong Kong or would most mainland Chinese agree?
This is really interesting, I think.

Some of the "Canto" dialects are VERY different from each other. People from Fujian Province for example (SE China) would find it difficult to understand someone from say......HK & vice versa. However, the written language is still the same......meaning wise not pronunciation. Even the written language is different from B4 Mao. As I understand it the written language now is almost a short hand version of the original text. The original test required 2 characters per "word", now it's mostly one relying on context of the conversation for definition/meaning.

The stupid government dont know shit. The size of china is around the size of EUROPE. To call that ONE COUNTRY is stupid. China have thousands of years of history like europe, and existed before technology like europe. the local languages inside china is diverse as eurpoean languages, so when the communist think they can just "declare" one language for all of china, it was bullshit to begin with. Your question is, if there is a default. NO. is there one declared by the recent goverment? yes, called POO TONG WAH... or the common language which is based on the language spoken at the capital region (those lazy F***s) and forced all the china to teach it in schools, so nowadays most people can speak their native home language PLUS poo tong wah... but I am ANTI-POOTONGWAH, they can shove it where the sun dont shine..

THE USA CAN have English as a default languge because it is a young country, built around expansion and technology.. communities were not separated by days of walking and weeks of hourseback over thousands of years, and the technology helped keep the language unified, and still we have accents all over USA, if we didnt have technology in the USA all the states will end up with different languages over the next few thousand years... this is why the written form of chinese is mostly the same in all of asia, because written on paper is a form of technology...and that going around china kept it mostly the same..

You go the extra mile for sure. Had us on the edge of our seat/couch, like we were watching Bear Grylls. We feel your pain regarding the Bonus section. People are touchy these days, consider yourself lucky, you could've used a wrong pronoun and be kicked off UA-cam. We love the Bonus section, reminds me of The Ed Sullivan Show, when we'd wait anxiously for Topo Gigio or The Beatles and then always the guys spinning plates.

I am a firm believer that FEELING safe have nothing to do with actually BEING SAFE. Being safe takes work to accomplish. people can feel safe and be battered, or they can feel like they gonna be a victim of all kinds of stuff, then nothing happens to them. Feeling safe is an idea that the liberal politicians try to use as an empty ploy to get more votes. They tend to make something out of nothing, promote that baloney and then fight that baloney to get more votes, meanwhile the people who know better knows that it was nothing to begin with. I think their strategy only works on people who do not put any effort into things. In order for one to BE SAFE, it takes alotta work. You first gotta look into what it is that you are doing, and what can be UNSAFE in that situation, then you have to figure out ways to AVOID unsafe situations, and also figure out methods to come out ahead once those situations eventually happen. Lots of work... SO the people who dont do any of that work, would listen to the liberal politician, and if nothing happens to them, they applaud that liberal politician, and the very few people where things do happen to them, well, those votes are far fewer than the the number of people where nothing happens so they dont care as long as they get their votes. I find that disgusting, because that did nothing to help the people who needed REAL METHODS be taught to them, and now they are all victims.

It was interesting to hear that you are able to order food in Chinese, but you have problems with conversational Chinese. I am like you, in being brought to North America when I was very young, at age 5-6 years old. Just like you, I can order food in Chinese, but I won't be able to talk about philosophy or politics or any other subject in Chinese.
I will be coming to Las Vegas in October, 2024. It may be interesting to meet you then, if you have time? Don Louie
