Restoration of a wooden watch box over 100 years old - Turn waste into antiques

I accidentally discovered a table clock box in the warehouse. I heard my father say that this watch box was left to me by my great-grandfather. It had been unused for a long time, so it was put in the warehouse. I restored it as a souvenir, I will find an old watch that fits in this box.

Why did he glue at first and then broke the glued piece?

I planned to just glue the crack so as not to pull out the nails and avoid damaging the carved patterns on the surface. But when I removed the valve, the crack wouldn't stick together so I had to remove all the nails and re-glue it again.
