I followed one up these up a mountain stream as I was fishing for native brook trout. I didn't know it was a heron for a couple of hours. I kept seeing its wet tracks on boulders and there were so many of those that I'd begun to believe that a flock of wild turkeys was crossing the stream. Eventually, we came face-to-face four miles from where I'd parked and at around 1800 feet elevation. I don't know how the heron made out but that day in July of '95 I'd caught and released so many trout that I stopped counting at eighty fish or so. That year saw above average rainfall and the streams in the area were running clear, high and cold. The undergrowth was so lush and verdant that my hike back down (being careful not fall and break anything) took close to two hours. I even walked _right_ up on a perfectly camouflaged fawn that looked up at me with those big eyes. Thirty yards or so down the trail I spotted the fawn's mother that looked at me with some curiosity. I gave both creatures a wide berth as I'd disturbed them enough.
Great Blue Heron......more alien than Alien........two daggers for a beak.....eyes as cold as ice........a telescopic neck that distends to a tunnel..........and a stomach made of iron. In short, the perfect eating machine!
Putting the back end of the fish in water seems weird. It’s obviously not to torcher the animal. It’s either to wet it more to lubricate it going down the throat, but the more I see of this behaviour, the more it looks like the heron is getting the fish to think it has a chance to swim away, and it will start wiggling again while in the throat which might help the swallowing process. If that’s true, it’s pretty ingenious
It seems like the heron is dipping the fish's tail in the water to trigger a swimming response to trick the fish into helping itself down the heron's throat.
People used to raise cormorants to do that. If you fitted them with a collar of sorts, they couldn't swallow the biggest fish, and the owner could feed themultiple smaller feeder fish in exchange.
The gbh on my canal and me have a great thing going; I toss bread pieces close to shore and he just waits for the fish to come over to the bread - boom, easy pickins for him. His record is 7 fish in a row before he got full.
Holy crap, that bird swallowed that small mouth bass, what a bird!!!! AS Curly would say, woob woob woob woob woob woob woob!!! Shees! That bird has a big stomach!!! Lol
Nossa que fome ...bicho lindo esfomeado...náo quer perder o almoço por nada kkkk ele deve ter suas razões .....kkkk imagens forte mais porém muito espetacular.....parabéns a todos
You would think all these years of catching to big fish they would have figured it out how to eat it and make it smaller to eat like poke it a few times
Amazing capture! It looked like that hungry bird caught a huge (do you know what kind?) fish! So in the end the Heron really could gulp (alive!?) that whole thing entirely okay?? I wonder, wouldn't the potential prey stand a slim chance of wriggling out to escape the stretchy neck/stomach if eaten in such a condition!?
The fish got stabbed, so it was dying. Birds can hurt themselves by being too greedy. Usually they learn to beat the fish to death before eating it, but the likelihood of getting their next ripped open is pretty low. It has happened to pelicans, their pouch can rip, but usually very tough!
Thank you so much for sharing you video. I enjoy watching the. Blue herons, but am confined to a wheelchair and it is difficult for me to travel.
Saw them behind my home where I used to live- the Great Blue Heron is a noble animal

really insightful !
That's exactly what I thought too.
Ah! I couldn't figure out why it was doing that, but you might be right.
I like dunked wings. So I thought it likes dunked tails.😂
I think you're correct, but I thought it was dipping sauce to make it slide down easier.

Outstanding footage. I didn't think it could get it down. Was wrong.
Hard to believe he swallowed a fish that big. It would be nice to train a heron to catch your fish.
Some Chinese use cormorants to do their fishing. Maybe a heron could be used in a similar way. ua-cam.com/video/cS9wzAjbJ24/v-deo.html

That's a huge fish ! Wow!
What a great capture, I am surprised he got it down. Interesting that he wanted to dip it in water to make the slide down easier too.

Wow. I see these birds at a lake near my brothers house all the time. I thought they were only catching minnows!
PItty the video was cut off about halfway through. I wish you had gotten the whole thing.
yeh he should've film 2 more minutes
Their throats must be tough to be able to take the fish's spikes going down?
The way the fish slides down presses the fin spikes to lay flat so they don't injure the bird.
How they feel when fish jump inside their stomach 🤔
Why can’t they kill it first?
It dies on the way down.
First saw one of these at Beaver Creek, Johnston, IA.
