    I don't have ADHD but I do have bad anxiety. I really like Care Bears and I just recently found a toy called a fashem. They are little 2 inch tall Care Bears that are squishy/rubbery/stretchy. I have one (Grumpy bear lol) and he's awesome for releases pent up stress. They come in various characters too (my little pony, superhero, Care Bears, etc) so you can find one that you or someone else will like!
    Also, unpopular opinion: fidget spinners actually help me because I find staring at the revolving wheel very calming, especially with the gentle breeze that it creates. But that's just me!

    • @CreatePeace612
      @CreatePeace612 7 років тому +1

      I'm a huge fan of the cube, but I haven't figured out how to deal with the biting issue. I feel like once you start you start needing that oral sensory input, and there isn't enough gum for that. I did try "chewable jewelry" but the one I got was too thick; maybe you'll have better luck with it.

    Thanks for the this vid Hannah and Jessica. I needed some ideas to help my son. All too often "fidget toys" are over-hyped by toy companies, all the kids want them, and a valuable coping device for my son and those like him gets banned from classrooms.
    In other news: Though it isn't movement-related, my some often sings to himself while doing homework (especially during difficult parts.) I've discovered it helps him cope and focus, and he gets through it all more productively and efficiently.

    I have ADD and my all time favorite fidget toy is a little floppy bike chain fidget (just search bike chain fidget on amazon). It is super super small but constantly keeps my fingers moving in different ways, and when I am going from class to class in school it fits on my finger like a midi ring kind of so its easy to transport for me! I use bigger fidgets like a snake cube when I am watching movies and things. *fidget toys are so important!!*

    I was stressed out today because I didn't have any of my normal fidgets, and I had a bunch of projects to get done at work. I caught myself biting the inside of my cheeks, which I hadn't done in a long time. So crazy that you guys posted this video just a few hours later! Really makes me value the importance of my fidgets for my ADHD. I personally am a texture kind of person, so soft and squishy things help me the most like a small piece of foam or even a soft couch. Thanks for this great content! :)

    I don't have ADD or ADHD, but I am autistic and have anxiety. I find spinner rings, fidget spinners, or just a really smooth rock to be the most helpful to me. Although I bring a little bag full of small fidget toys around with me cause If I don't have any of those things to distract my fingers I'll have to pace or pick my skin until it bleeds, so not good. I also really love kinetic sand, I have a bowl full of it at home that I play with, but it's not so portable or discreet.

    • @xnygmas

    YAS! Rubik's cubes are amazing for fidgeting/stimming! I don't have ADHD, but I am autistic, so some fidgets can be a bit unsatisfying for me; Rubik's cubes are the best, though. They let me zone in on something and just follow a series of algorithms that never change and always lead you back to a solved cube. It really calms me down and helps me just focus when I'm feeling overwhelmed.

    Oh my god, Hannah, I have chewed my tongue and cheeks for almost 13 years now, stopped a couple of times but always gone back to it. I've had people suggest therapy, hypnosis, "just getting over it"...but no one ever suggested a fidget toy. I'm so glad you mentioned that, because not only have you given me a ray of hope that I could actually stop one day, you also made me feel so much less ashamed of chewing in the first place. Thank you

      It depends on what kind of moving she does. My 4 yr old loves to run, climb, and go under things. She's more likely to be climbing under a chair than sitting in it. A fidget toy doesn't work with her. Playgrounds and her bike are better.

    • @therebex23
      @therebex23 7 років тому +17

      Julie Cornewell I think you bring up a really good point. Not sure if your daughter (or anyone else reading this comment who is not hyperactive but more just...restless when needing to "sit still") is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD but based on what you described I wanted to give a potentially helpful suggestion - exercise balls instead of chairs! The brain focuses on balancing in a way that satisfies that need to be active constantly (basically meeting the need to be moving around) so that tasks can be completed ore efficiently (for a child a task would be eating dinner, for an adult a task would be desk-related work).

    • @torilynn2159
      @torilynn2159 6 років тому +7

      Sometimes young children just need to be active I don't think fidget toys always work as well on children because a lot of times children are just naturally active but I might just be making that up in my head idk

    As a fellow diagnosed ADHD human, I love anything with texture to move my fingers on. My favorite thing happens to be a silicone scrubbing sponge (if you look one up on amazon you'll see what I'm talking about). its just this little circle silicone object that feels like silicone bristles. I LOVE it! I use it all the time at my tutor's when I am trying to explain concepts out loud. It's not your traditional fidget toy, but I love this thing. I also enjoy anyting that you can just move around in your hands. Like the tangle toys or even play doh (I have a small thing of play doh on my desk).

    I had a broken finger several years ago which didn't heal properly, my occupational therapist gave me a tub of therapy putty which I carried in my purse. I found myself taking it out in meetings & in other situations which required intense concentration. I now carry many, many lipsticks in my bag & find turning the tube up & down comforting, I also choose lipsticks with pleasing scents so it stimulates all my senses. I also like flipping open my car key, it's such a satisfying feeling..kinda like a switch blade. Thanks for some more awesome content.

    Whoa. I talked ADHD with my therapist this week for the first time. The idea of me having ADHD actually struck me when I read buffering, but I kind if let it slide. Now my therapist gave me one of those self evaluation forms to see if it could be what I can't really describe as anything else than 'my heads just messy. It just never stops spinning' and appereantly my answers shows that I should get a real evalution. I don't want to project all of my issues on a diagnosis I don't have 'yet'. It could just be side effects from the depression and anxiety issues I've had for years. But I do feel like it makes sense? Hey Hannah and everyone here with ADHD , what was it like from the moment your therapist first brought it up until you got diagnosed? Did it make sense? Has anyone suspected ADHD but ended up with another diagnosis?
    Odd and off topic questions but sorry, I've spent the week thinking about this and then I see you Hannah, my mental health inspiration, post this. Cool.
    Btw my fidgeting during lessons and lectures has always been drawing on tables and in the books i should be taskig notes in. Can't recommend.

      Definitely get an evaluation for it if you're feeling that it's a possibility! I'm getting one this week actually. I've thought I've had it for years now but it took until my last year of college to do anything about it. But all throughout my life I've been told that I'm a dreamer in school, or I get in trouble for talking too much. Even now I talk too much in my classes and my friends are always annoyed. To this day it's difficult for me to finish my school work and it takes me longer than most. I feel that im most impaired socially, as my friends complain at my talking and I often interrupt or I'll start a story and then forget halfway through that I was even talking

    I really appreciate this video and the awareness it brings. I teach young kids with autism and I have used fidgets for years. I like using some of these for my students such as the tangle toy, and the "stress ball". The sticky texture of that frog stress ball is most of my students' favorite!
    Some things I use (for my kids) as fidgets that are not necessarily conventional fidgets include small bean bag animals. They can shake the beans in the bag and push them around the bag to use for fidgeting, and the fact that it's an animal is often comforting for them. So in this case, they can be fidgets and comfort items to help them focus AND help their anxiety.
    Stuffed stress balls are another effective fidget. I have a small stuffed hamburger. They can squeeze it and fidget with it. For my students who sometimes get angry, (bang their hands against desks, etc.) it gives them a soft medium to do so, and a fidget to help them get their emotions out. (In other words, they can beat the fidget up instead of the desk).
    Also... I'm glad she said fidget spinners are not a real fidget!! They are a toy! They don't help kids focus, they're so distracting!

    I love my fidget cube and I'm definitely going to check out one of those bumpy tangles.. but my number 1 fidget device is knitting. I always keep a mindless knitting* project onboard for doing while watching TV or sitting around talking to friends. I'll also do a row if I'm getting frustrated with a work project, and it's instantly soothing and I can get back to work with a calm mind.
    *mindless knitting = a project that is so easy you don't have to look at your hands or count stitches while knitting it.

    I'm so glad you brought up rings at the end! I wear a puzzle ring and a rolling ring every day to fidget with when I'm at work because they look professional, and I can subtly play with them even in meetings. I'd highly recommend them for anyone who isn't sure about the subtlety of normal fidget toys.

    I don't have an ADHD diagnosis and I was worried that by using fidget toys I'd maybe be appropriating. But I saw this thing about the curb cutter effect, or the idea that if the people who don't need things like fidget toys, lowered curbs, ramps etc. use them, it normalises those things and makes them more available. So I got some tangles and I love them. They make it so much easier to focus and have really helped me to stop destroying my desk when I need something to do with my hands.

    Thanks for bringing up the part about parents telling their kids to stop fidgeting and what it might manifest into! We did this to our son who would roll the bottom of shirt up between his fingers but would expose his belly and chest, and sure enough when we had him stop doing that he started grinding his teeth. Two of them chipped, but luckily they were still baby teeth. His favorite fidget toy is now a tiny bean bag chair meant for cell phones. This video made me realize that I need to have more "toys" laying around the house and in the car. Thank you!

    So, at 2:50, you talk about how your test of a fidget is how well it helps you accomplish your task, which is exactly what I look for too. The problem is, sometimes my tasks require both hands, like when I'm typing or writing something. A friend of mine introduced me to chewelry, which is jewelry you can chew on. I've ordered a necklace and it should be here soon, and I'm very excited. I've also ordered a new fidget cube for when I can spare a hand to fidget.

    Because of you two, I went out and got a spinner ring yesterday (wearing it right now) and IT WORKS! It's a really sexy stainless steel one with a black checkerboard spinning part. It runs a little rough unless oiled (which I like) and it is barely noticeable unless I mention it. With the ring I managed to get ALL of my housework done and I even watered the garden after. You are both a genuine breath of fresh air.

    Guitar is my fidget toy. I strum/pick very lightly and conversation goes right on atop it all. Keeps my hands busy, covers other distracting noises, and I don't need to look at it, I can stay tuned to others in the room.
    But they're hard to keep handy. Wow I didn't realize some of the "fidget things" I'd been doing or seen. I've always collected small smooth stones. A pal in HS used to spin his class ring around his finger absolutely constantly. ADHD wasn't much known back then. I also keep short lengths of rope handy for learning knots (handy for camping/boating/doing). I can make that marble in the sleeve MUCH easier than I made a fidget spinner-that I gave away.

They're great because I can wear them allllll the time so I don't have to worry about forgetting them or losing them. I can also spin them either one or two handed. They chill on my thumb currently and I love spinning them between my thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand. When I was little I used to do origami in class. My teacher was concerned that I wasn't listening or learning anything so she told the headteacher, who watched me make an origami sphere during class (I've no idea how I did it!), then called me into her office at the end. She then told my parents that I not only made this beautiful thing but I could tell her, almost word for word, what was being taught in that lesson and that she was amazed. This was 20 years ago... if I was a child now I would probably be diagnosed with ADHD! If my hands are occupied or I'm listening to music, something else to focus on, information goes in so much easier. So I can kind of relate! I love my fidget spinner, it has a good weight to it (it's metal) and the middle part that you I hold is so smooth, I love stroking it with my thumb, so I can totally see the appeal of the ergonomic rock! Also have you seen the tiny magnetic balls that you can make loads of things out of? They're amazing! Thank you guys for this video! 😃❤️

    My therapist has fidget toys in their office and honestly that makes it way easier for me to be open because I can focus on the toy while I talk. I hate making eye contact, especially when I feel vulnerable, so being able to look away and divert my nervous energy into something is super helpful. My old therapist would always comment on my fidgeting which made me self-conscious and made it harder to open up.

    Similar to the worry stone, for the longest time i had a little half of a clam shell that i had found at a beach and it was my fidget toy for the longest time when i was younger. One side was perfectly smooth and curved in and the other side had a rougher texture and curved out, it really kept me grounded to just be able to roll it between my fingers, rub it, or try to lightly bend it even though i never did it hard enough for it to break or anything. Now i dont know what happened to that shell but my fidgetting habit came back in my later years of middle school, and around that time i got a necklace that i absolutely love and still have, and i mostly fidget with it now.
