In episode 17, come along with us, as Rob and I explore the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal with walking buddies from a photo group… John, Josie, Ken and our 3 dogs, Tilly, Rum (aka. Rumour Pup) and Max.
We check out the disused portion of canal, the old locks and fixtures and bridges that are still in place! We take in the scenery and soon search for a pub….in a very ‘different’ village!
Tilly claims more real estate for her Cumbrian property portfolio.

Lovely video, I've never gone up that far myself. I would have been absolutely knackered walking in that heat! Carol, what you thought was a culvert to stop the pound from getting too shallow, is partly correct. it is actually the by-wash, which is primarily designed to drain water off the top pound into the bottom pound, to prevent the water from breaching the lock gates. Looking forward to your next installment, Chris.
That’s great information, many thanks Chris! That makes sense about the by-wash. We live and learn! :) See you on our way back North (we’re not far from Moon’s Bridge now).
Very sad to see the canal in such a sorry state of dereliction. Though there is hope - I used to live near the Basingstoke Canal, which was much worse, but was eventually restored and has been back in use for many years now.
It is. The last cargo was coal from Barrow in 1947, so it wasn’t the motorway that killed the canal. By then it was owned by the railway, so its fall into disrepair was virtually guaranteed. Ever since then there’s been a lot of active support for its restoration. Because it’s built on top of limestone, it needed constant attention to maintain it due to seepage. The plan is to build an aqueduct over the M6
@@NarrowboatLiberty that's a real positive! I love any of the old transport systems being restored. Down here there's a lot of rejuvenation and reconnection of the old railway links that idiot Beeching got rid of!! 🙄 🚆 !
@@carolcaswell5308 I agree Sis. Shameful what they did to our national railway system under Beeching and later transport ministers! Grrrrr
Hopefully the canal will be restored. Tilly must own a large chunk of Lancashire by now.
@@tamavua1 she’s claimed several thousand acres in the past year alone!

Thanks for a lovely relaxing video.Best Wishes
Hey Anthony! You’re welcome and thanks for your comment!
Great video Sounds really noisy up there! Nice to see the top end of the Lanky though and saves us cruising all the way. Thanks for another awesome vlog
Cheers mate - saved you some petrol and a few hours…we’ve got a couple of things here with your names on them when we see you next!
Great video -apart from noisy traffic! But I suppose that's why canals declined in the first place ,railways first then the motorways! Shame didn't get yourselves a well earned pub lunch!! x
Haha. We hid our disappointment well, Sis xo
Great Vlog guys, it’s a shame they couldn’t reopen that section past Tewitfield Marina 😉
Yes it is. They are starting the restoration from the Kendal end, but I suspect it will take years to link it to the Tewitfield section. Likely beyond our boating lifetime! Thanks for commenting! xo
20 years ago it was supposed to be a millennium project to re-open the canal to Kendal where it terminated....since then all they ever do is talk but no action despite money raised...the walk is great....there is a short tunnel which is still in water at Hincaster....how come you missed Kendal basin....
Haha. I know. Won’t be opened in my lifetime (if ever)! We just never managed (yet) to complete the walk. Ran out of time as we had a few other things we needed to do and places we needed to be!
