- As numerous American R&B solo artists, duos and groups made their indelible mark in the genre in the 90’s; there were also a few UK R&B artists that did the same across the pond around the same time. Eternal was one of them. They looked good, sounded good and were considered the UK’s answer to another popular foursome, En Vogue. Ironically, like their American counterparts, the group dealt with their fair share of internal issues among the members that eventually tore them apart. Let’s find out whatever happened to British R&B girl group Eternal.

Right!!🤣👏🏾👏🏾
Yes, although Keisha lives up to her reputation sadly so I kind of understand why the group had so much drama. I was a supporter and fan of hers too until I meet her in real life. Mutya is lovely thou!
I always liked the original line up musically, they really should’ve ended the group when Last original member was kicked out instead of adding Jade.
I Met jade as well she was just ok!

I'm a rock guy myself, but I loved eternal back in the day. They were great and had some really good songs. Should have been bigger than the spice girls.
They remain the biggest selling R&B girl group in the UK! 🇬🇧
Still playing their stuff in 2024.
Back in '94 when I first heard from them, I was 22, and care free. This is definitively a blast from the past. I LOVED them. My favorite songs were Stay and This Love's for Real. They remind me of my late sister. She loved them too. She passed back in March 2020. RIP sis. :'(
My condoleances may she rest in peace xx
My condolences on the passing of your sister may she continue to rest in peace xx
I'm so sorry. May she RIP and wishing you strength and peace x
Sorry for your loss 🙏🏾
My fellow British gals, loved them, shame they didn't last.
I agree.
They had 3 albums and two of them were very successful, by Pop standards they definitely lasted.
I still own " stay" on vinly. Its got the Teddy Riley mixes on it.
They weren't only loved in Britain. The world over. Their Angel of mine version was amazing.
Yeah❣
Do All Saints next
Yes
Yeah I love that song never ever that song still goes hard
They still are together!
All Saints were my girls. 😁 I still have their album and listen to it.
They do indeed and they had released two new very solid albums: 2015 'Red Flag' and 2018 'Testament', check their latest videos and live performances they're there 💪💪💜😻
I always felt like I was the only American who knew about Eternal back in the 1990s, specifically starting with their #1 hit "I Wanna be the Only One". And still love listening to their song "Angel of Mine" which was later covered by Monica. Eternal deserved more success in America and Easther is one of the best lead singers of any girl group. Can you do the Honeyz next?
@@natsohigh5552 When The Show's Over is my jam!
I loved the Honeyz
Only the first album was released in the USA as there were problems with the US EMI label which folded in 1997. Would have been great to see Eternal have further success in the USA after Stay!
I remember Eternal here in the states. I never knew their name but I loved the music. Wow, I was a little girl listening to their music along with SWV, En Vogue, Silkk and etc. I never knew that they were from the UK. I really enjoyed the video.💯
I’m a white gay man and Eternal were my first favourite pop group. They were huge for my age group (I’m 40 now)
Their first album is one of the greatest pop albums of all time. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC
I think the gospel direction hindered their success
@bike suisala I really don’t.

Same here. But I disagree with the gospel part, I blame the sisters
@bike suisala If it's not hurting anyone, yes.....
I had their cassette tape lol. Loved it. "Stay" still gives me goosebumps
I call bs about black girls don't sell magazines. Naomi Campbell is British and just happened to be the biggest supermodel in the world and She was all over the magazine's back in the 90's. I'm certain the magazine's flew off the shelves when she was on the front cover. Beauty sells, no matter what, "colour."
It's called TOKEN BLACK GIRL
Naomi was not all over the COVER of those magazines though. Even she complained she never got the covers and makeup deals that for instance her friend Kate Moss got. She only had her second British Vogue cover after that editor Alexandra Shulman or whatever she is called, left. Quite ironic taht Naomi is the one supermodel still standing after all that.
Naomi was a myth. I hate to say it, but she was a token. She was never rated as high as people make out. It always seemed to me she was forced into certain campaigns. She was there for diversity only. Even now she struggles for relevancy
@@rozz7531 Is she really though? She has been struggling for relevancy for a while now. She is like in no man's land now. Nobody really has a use for het
@@D1Snr How is she struggling for relevancy? She is independently wealthy and works with charities and causes in the Carribean and Africa. She has made her money and does stuff on US media as a side line.

their version of Someday from Disney’s hunchback OST is fab.

There version is the original ‘Angel of mine’
It was released a year before Monica’s version.
@@2damecuteUK yep theirs was1997 and hers was 98.

Stay is my jam! I wonder whose idea it was for them to remake a Glenn Jones song. They really made it their own.
I remember that Glenn Jones have two "Stay" songs. Very good slow song in 1986 and Upbeat song in 1990 that later covered by Eternal :)
I remember their single _"Stay"._ To date, it remains one of my favorites. I never knew the group was British, though! After watching this, I do wonder why Louise left so quickly. It kind of makes me wonder if she took the whole "Black people don't sell magazines" thing seriously and struck out on her own as a result. The fact that she has never joined them for any sort of reunion performance seriously makes me question if she was purposefully distancing herself.
Thank you for uploading this! ❤️
As a white musician in black music genres I can tell you that the music in Europe is extremely segregated. The main part was the INTERRACIAL aspect. Yes you can sell an all black group on magazines... But not an interracial one. At least they feel it hard to market
As a black English person who remembers the period in time, from my recollection Louis left mainly because when the band was trying to break the US market, the trouble from the UK reversed. Labels and radio stations that would play/sign R&B artists weren't keen that there was a white member in there. The girls were overall frustrated about having troubles everywhere for being a biracial group. She got a solo deal and she took it, the group went even more for a gospel/soulful sound from the second album onwards, more-so apparently the sisters were reportedly jealous of Louise being most popular with men in the UK.
she left because the sisters made her fell uncomfortable
@@GeckoCityUK What does that even mean??🤔
“ Don’t Say Goodbye “ is still one of my favorite songs.I was working in a record store in 1993-94 when this came out ,so thankfully I had the opportunity to hear so much great music .

Fun Fact : "Stay" original covered by Glenn Jones. And he recorded "Stay" two songs (Same name but different songs) in 1986 and 1990. 1986 was a very good slow song and 1990 was a upbeat that later covered by Eternal :)

Stay by Eternal was on heavy rotation on MTV, BET and The Box!
Eternal were one of my favourite groups during the mid 90s. Their first two albums were very different to each other but that's growing up I guess. Easther Bennett was once told off during a performance in a church for wearing an overly revealing top - the Q magazine headline 'Eternal damnation!' still makes me chuckle. Pleased that Kelle has been able to come back to the limelight in spite of her lupus. I actually remember in the first interview I read with them that Vernie gave up a place at law school to be in the group and her parents weren't best pleased - interesting that she's gone back to that now. Thank you LGTTR for your regular slices of nostalgia!
As someone raised on Led Zeppelin etc, I know a good song when I hear one, and Stay by Eternal was such a song. The lead vocal was amazing. They also look great and danced well. Only The Sugababes had as much talent in my humble opinion.
Thanks for sharing. The 90's was definitely the Blessed era for Music UK and US 🥰🥰.
Don't forget the 70s and 80s. In France as well😊
Thanks for putting people (who maybe didn’t know) onto this girl group.

What really happened to them.
I am surprised you did not mention their hit single Angel of Mine which a year later was covered successfully by Monica
Competed with Envoge? That's crazy Destiny's Child (the original four) couldn't even begin to compete with them lol
That's probably because Destiny's Child were much younger and they came in at the end tail end of En Vogue's run anyway, while Eternal was older and was making music during pretty much the same duration as En Vogue.
They were supposed to be the UK's response to En Vogue. Eternal was a groundbreaking group at that time. Like they say in the video, a multiracial R&B girl group that got success, that was not something you would see everyday. When the Spice Girls achieved worldwide success it was also impressive to see a diverse group making it big, but they made pop music. The fact that Eternal got successful being a R&B group is something outstanding.
@@jeniestra. I agree. They were the British version/answer to/of EV just with the exception that in EV all members sang lead where as Eternal had a sole lead singer.. Easther was definitely the Terry of the group (powerhouse vocalist). Louise's departure was very much like Dawn Robinson's but her (Louise) solo career was more successful.. Definitely see Vernie as Cindy since she continued on with her sister after Kellie left.. Two different groups but the build and the dynamics are kind of parallel.
@@geordieb4670 I totally agree with your comment. It's too bad many times these bands cannot overcome their differences and much of the talent gets wasted. To me Eternal was perfect with the four of them.
@@jeniestra. I agree as well but Eternal saw continued success as a trio whereas En Vogue saw a decline in success as EV3 and numerous line up changes after Dawn's departure.. En Vogue lost its edge and sex appeal figure while Eternal still had its main vocalist..

After that first album, how the hell do you repeat that success? You can't please the fans if they think every song is going to be better than the last. Well done, Eternal, that first album was amazing ladies.
In the 90s and 2000s I saw a lot more darker skinned BW (like myself ) solo artists and girl groups ... not so much now
It's all about the light skinned/ mixed/ white / exotic girls now. As soon as they learnt to sing well....out went the dark skinned girls.
No more Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick etc. Shaznay All Saints and Normani 5th Harmony never really took off as solo careers.
Now if you put together a girl group the ethnic /non white ones will either be mixed black or something other than black eg Leeanne and Jade Little Mix, Mel B Spice Girls etc.
I know right. I think that has just fueled the whole complexion hierarchy issue. In hindsight, back in those days I was confident in my skin as a youngster (as stupid as it sounds), probably thanks to role models like these and actresses too. There were so many relatable films back then. Now, I listen to my kids complain and compare themselves to average looking people (no offence intended). I know it's not about looks. For the most part, most people look average and add extra "beauty" with enhancements like makeup. Real beauty actually comes through when the personality "hits". I digress.... To favour a group of people based on complexion alone is perplexing to me 🤔. As trivial as it seemed, I really do think it's because of what I grew up with. Things really have changed 😔
