Happy memories of CMS Ladies College. Remember singing this same song nearly 50 ago in elementary school. I remember Miss Simon very fondly.

I also was at Loughborough Endowed Schools, - in my case at Loughborough Grammar School, - and, although this was indeed written as the School Hymn by Canon G.W.Briggs we didn't use the tune 'Wolvercote' which is the one used in this performance. Canon Briggs was also something of a composer, and specifically wrote the original tune - appropriately named 'Loughborough' - which is still used at the school, and is the more usual tune used in Britain. The original second verse is also different and specific, particularly to L.G.S. When Briggs wrote it, and still at the time I was there in the late 1960s and early 1970s it began: "Four hundred years enduring from age to following age/A hundred generations have built our heritage." As L.G.S. celebrated the half-millennium since its foundation in 1995, I believe that the first line has now been amended to "Five hundred years enduring....."

The tune is actually Lancashire (often sung to "Lead on, O King eternal"). Wolvercote appears in the Hymnal 1982 with the above text. Great tune.

Tiny bit of concern. The tune is noted as "WOLVERCOTE" by Fergusson. Actually, it is more a kin to LANCASHIRE by Henry Smart(1813-1879). The former tune is very different to the one sung by the LC choir!! Clarification please?
