The television movies from this period in America are among my favorites. I was 12 the year this was aired and had begun babysitting the year before to earn extra money. We still had a black and white television at our house since my mother was widowed when I was very young and consequently watching color TV at my various childminding jobs was a very big deal. You won't find better writing, acting, or presentation in general then back in these old school days where entertainment was still professionally packaged minus any smut or gratuitous violence. Who needed CGI special effects when you had this kind of consistent quality in network programming? Love it, and want to thank you sincerely for the memories of a kinder, gentler time, at least as far as TV was concerned.
Watching this, you'd never guess Rosalind Russell was suffering crippling rheumatoid arthritis (that ended her theatrical film career because she was no longer insurable), would you? Okay, the hands are gnarled, and her face is slightly swollen from the cortisone injections, but her energy and enthusiasm seem boundless, and not a flinch to indicate how much pain she was undoubtedly in. What a star!
One cannot unsee Rosalind Russell's puffiness ... The Crooked Hearts was to be her last movie appearance...she died of breast cancer in 1976;;;;Douglas Fairbanks Jr still looked great
Ross Martin was an exceptional actor. He could play any part (with any accent) and always be convincing. I enjoyed watching him in this movie. It was full of great stars and very entertaining.
Thank you for posting. Such a joy to see the actors that are no longer with us. Ross Martin spoke Polish,Yiddish, some Russian before learning English, later he added French, Spanish and Italian. Rosalind Russell will always be "Auntie Mame" to me. I never read her book " Life Is A Banquet". I first remember her playing "Sister Kenny" fighting Polio. Maureen O'Sullivan, the first Jane for Tarzan, back in the 1930's. Happy viewing from Las Vegas, NV August 26, 2018
Her autobiography is worth tracking down. There's lots of great stories. I hope someone will write an actual biography before her son, Lance, passes away.
I love movies like this even though I was born in 74 I don't think of these of that old- I think of movies from the 40s as classic old movies. Anyways thanks for posting- I like mystery movies made before the 80s this was a treat!
Very cute made for tv movie from the 70's. It was great seeing the classic movie stars Rosalind Russell, Doug Fairbanks, Jr. and Maureen O'Sullivan and Kent Smith. I especially loved Rosalind's wardrobe. She looked flawless in those early 70's fashions. Thanks for posting.
I am a huge fan of Rosalind Russell. This film is a charming old chestnut and loved watching it. Never remember seeing it back in the day so this was really a treat As always, thank you Chris Johnson for all the lovely stuff you post for our enjoyment.
This is a favorite movie ever for me! I mean, everything from the dialogue to the time-period to the stars, I just love! Thank you so very much for adding it here!
There’s that old Yellow Cab 🚕. Today I’m a 79 year old woman but when I was a 7 year old girl 👧 my mother didn’t have a car so she and I were brought to our little two room house 🏡 in a Yellow Cab 🚕. 😅😅😅
What a lovely movie ! You could take all the charm on display and make a small sea . Effortless performances from DF Jr , Russell & co ;the scenery from that time does gets you nostalgic . I didn't hear a single profanity, just think of that . Really didn't guess that both were accomplished felons .
Directed by Jay Sandrich, veteran director of numerous Mary Tyler Moore shows and other MTM productions. An added bonus to a stellar cast working with a clever script.
When TV movies first became popular in the late 1960s there were still some veteran actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age still alive and willing to work occasionally. And there were other familiar faces among the casts. That is no longer true, especially for Lifetime and Hallmark.
I'm 70. I was going to name my daughter Rosalind Russell R..... Or Haley Mills R..... But her father said Rosalind Marie R.... would suffice; & so it did. 😁
My GOD, Maureen looks sensational! Jane in the "Tarzan" movies of the early-1930s and here forty years later..?!?!? Roz was in such pain from her illnesses and suffering from side-effects in her face. Still a trouper.

Hard to believe that Zimbalist Jr. was 53/54 when filming this. He looks over 70. He was raised an Episcopal, but in the late 70s, he would make a brief side-trip into Fundamentalist Christianity with Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker. He later returned to his Episcopal upbringing. (His family roots were actually of the Jewish faith.)

Another really good RRussell movie. A very different kind of suspense than there is today...
