M&S is a relatively expensive food supermarket. Excellent quality though.

The average Brit doesn't do their grocery shop in m and s. It's good for special treats ,though the food is usually good quality.
Usually use M&S food for special occasions as it’s much more expensive but good quality.
Also, virtually everything is more expensive in London compared to elsewhere in the country, and central London is probably more expensive again compared to less central areas where most people actually live and shop.

I love Marks and Spencer’s and go nuts when I visit from Canada. I remember the M&S in Canada. They were much smaller versions of the UK stores and I don’t think they did well because they didn’t have a big range of products, at least that’s how it was in our city.

Where to in Cuba next Mikey?
When I grew up in the 1970s, everyone called it "Marks & Sparks".
That said, I haven't been back to the UK since 1991, so I don't know if "Marks & Sparks" is still used, or just another forgotten remnant of my youth 😇

Its regarded as a kinda higher end shop here in the UK, its known for its quality especially the food and clothing.
Got to say theyve been around for years and still going strong unlike a lot of other iconic British stores which have now closed.

The clothing from M&S is not high quality, it’s not bad but very much aimed at the middle market. Their food stores, though not as comprehensive as some other brands are excellent and among the best quality.

@@traceys8065 Personally, I get what you mean, it’s quality for the price. It’s more expensive than other stores but you get a better product, in both food and clothing than some other department stores. It’s not “high end” nor is it extortionate.
Nice :) M&S has a reputation for pricy but very good quality food. Seeing those price conversions was interesting - the only time I’ve been on holiday in Canada was 30 years ago and back then £1 bought exactly $2, which made conversions easy! I remember being on a coach tour of Montreal and my amusement at the horror of the Americans on the bus when the guide converted the petrol price of 60c/litre into US $/gallon - it was exactly half the price it was here at the time (60p/ltr). I changed a £50 note for $100 note in Toronto and immediately spent it on a $96 day trip to Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mists, Happy memories. 😊
Canada is Very Expensive!! and the conversion from and to BP is expensive for Canadian, so when we travel to Britain items can and are expensive for Canadians!!!
M 'n S as it is called here specialises in quality food that needs little work, so a lot of really high quality ready meals and part prepared ingredients. Expensive, but very convenient.

My family and I lived in New Jersey for 2 years in the early 1990s. Although a local supermarket chain, Kings, sold some M&S food products, we enjoyed our occasional forays into Canada as we could visit the M&S stores. I remember shopping in M&S in Niagara, Kingston and Ottawa.

Yes, there used to be Marks and Spencer at Yorkdale Mall in Toronto in the 1970s and 80s (maybe early 90s). Always had great chips and snacks. I think there were other locations too in Canada. Our low Canadian dollar does not go very far in Europe 🤑

We actually have a memorial stand in Leeds west Yorkshire for marks and Spencer. It was where it all started it's a small stand and a mark's and Spencer clock tower. Leeds Market is one of the oldest most beautiful Market in Europe. It's stunning architecture and beautiful ornate guildings. If you ever come back come to Yorkshire. You won't regret it. 5 minutes from town's is surrounded by insane countryside

@@Finding-Fish Yorkshire are the best fish and chips in the universe lot
They still cooked the traditional way here and you must try our fish cakes slices of potatoes with chunks of fish in the middle battered and fried for around 20 minutes. My friends come from Liverpool and take them back. My daughter always came home from London and it's the first thing she wanted to eat. You must make sure though it's traditional Yorkshire. It's what we fry in. If you ever come reach out I can tell you many places first class.
There used to be lots of Marks & Spencer stores in Canada.

London is hands down the most expensive city in the UK and M&S certainly up there in price so I suspect this may not be a typical representation of food prices in the UK. It would be a bit like going to new York city and comparing prices to other cities in the US.

Coastal towns usually do the best fish and chips. Look for the ones with large queues on a Friday night. They are usually the ones used by the locals, who obviously know best.
London, like most capital cities is expensive but the outskirts are cheaper and, if you venture far enough out, cheaper still.

M&S is more expensive than other supermarkets, however thier Sandwiches are a lot better than alternatives.
Our sandwich was delicious and there were sooooo many to choose from.
People are under the assumption that marks and Spencer’s are expensive, I have always found that their bread milk butter and are eggs are extremely cheap compared to other supermarkets , bought 4 Aberdeen beef burgers for 3 .75 .😮
I think M&S is excellent value for what you get. I don’t tend to waste any food I buy there and the clothes last forever. I’ve still got some M&S jeans and tops I’ve had for 10 years. I’d say I got my moneys worth.

We're in baby wear, where's the food... cut to the alcohol lol. some of those snacks looked delicious! Shopping when hungry is dangerous. The prices seem similar to ours but a different variety and brands. Thanks for the video Mike and Jenn!

Those Caramel Wafers, Tunnocks, in M&S were £2.40, on my ASDA shop this week they were £1.59, shocking.

We were some of the first customers through the doors at the grand opening here in Amsterdam and still can not figure why they closed it down a few years back.

@@Finding-Fish Another 63 year old who goes to M&S every week. They have food only stores too. I do half my shop in M&S for the nice things, then the rest at Sainsbury's. Both adjacent to each other and I can drive/park free. Couldn't ask for more.
Brand names always cost a premium, But dont mean there any better. Besides M and S are always deare. Also if you go to a CO OP, Or Spar. There foods are as good if not better. But there foods can be expensive. But quality though.

When dealing with the liquids you also need to factor in that a UK pint is 20 fl oz, not the 16 as in USA - so our pint is 25% than yours 😀

M&S are generally more expensive than most other retailers in the UK Aldi Tesco and Sainsbury’s but they not next to Sel-fridges!!!!!
We use to have a Marks & Spencer’s years ago at shopper world in Brampton like over 30 years ago or longer

Any supermarket is expensive if you randomly pick things without thinking. I can shop in M&S easily without having to pay more than somewhere like Sainsbury's or Tesco, and often the 'deals' available in a lot of supermarkets are a total con. Tesco in particular play a whole host of tricks to convince the customer that they're getting a good deal.

@@Finding-Fish Go to the north of England if you want proper fish and chips. Whitby for example. London is that last place to be looking for that.
Coastal towns generally do the best fish and chips but some pretty good ones in London as well. When we lived in south East London we could all choose our own takeaway from a variety of shops close to each other, but the fish and chips were very good. Best eaten hot with lots of salt and malt vinegar.

Marks and Sparks stuff is excellent quality which unfortunately makes it one of the most expensive chain stores in the UK. Once upon a time the stores were packed with customers but with the advent of stores like Primark those days are gone 🇬🇧

@@Finding-Fish I agree their clothing is great quality and I have cardigans and underwear from them but people shopping on a limited budget forget the quality over quantity rule hence Marks has struggled in the last few years 🇬🇧

Little more costly than Aldi or Tesco. Many items are the same price. Goats milk was way cheaper a year ago but it's levelled up with Tesco and others since. Also veg does not last. But MnS veg will last a week or more. Not Much difference in the price. Coop is never mentioned. That's the one store where costs are higher than MnS on many items.

My son lives in ‘Toronno’ and bewails the cost of food there so maybe it’s the same in all great cities. No idea where you’ll find proper fish and chips in London. Here in Devon you’d find plenty of places.
The thing about M&S is that it is not the most trendy or the cheapest but it is good stuff and will last.
