Thank you so much for sharing this debate, which is on arguably the most important issue this country faces. So much about our future depends upon the ability to examine every point of view so that informed decisions can be made. I haven't seen the outcome yet but i hope it was in favour of free speech.

Irony of using free-speech to ban free-speech. What is the alternative. banning the symptoms does not cure the disease. Hate groups will hate without question. Hate groups will thrive and grow in secret. Many terrible hate crimes will occur, for the wolves will dress as sheep.

Exactly! Old Bailey might as well be a Sharia Court now. The journalists outside from the BBC harassed him like crazy, while he asked a few guys about their sentence and was jailed. I guess they are allowed to do what the court charged him with doing. Makes zero sense. Those who don't like TR who support this must also support that they are okay with a citizen journalist being put in prison for NOT breaking the law, only because they oppose his views. I wouldn't support jailing someone I don't like if they broke no laws. It's insane. The majority of people don't support this censorship garbage. You can look at the likes/dislikes on these views and can easily see those who are pro-free speech have majority likes, while those who support de-platforming have a huge percentage of dislikes.

This man is hitting the nail on the head. To sum up in short what he is saying. I'll say this way.
    "self control" .............
The lack of self control triggers people. Having no self control causes she'll shock and shallow minded people to come unglued because they have lived a sheltered lives without real harm and they have no idea the consequences of over reacting to their own self. A spanking would have help bust their pride while growing up as I'm sure people children need correction, though many children receive neither, discipline or correction and they grow up to be snowflakes that are triggered by the slightest they are not familiar with.
They have a strong "lack of self control and austerity" , accept only what they them self say and think and none else count unless your agreeing... "brat" is a real term. Like it or not. "Spoiled" is a real term. Like it or not. "Self centered", yeah that's a real thing. "Conceited", also is a real thing. This would describe 80 percent of the left side of that room I'm sure....
I wonder if you took all they had and put them in normal life with the rest of us, they could not take it...
Where i come from, no one cares if you cry over spilled milk and no one cares if you decide to flop down on the floor like a kid and have a tantrum... you might get spanked for that bull crap in my house especially for sure... I have 2 kids in college and I did not raise weak, crying baby, tantrum having, fit stomping, snowflakes that have no self control. My kids would laugh the whole left side of the room out the door...
Here in america, we do have a law just for these kind of snowflakes.... "you have the right to remain silent", anything you say can be used against you. Even if it offends you..... I'm sure most of the left side offend their own self regular when they understand something differently.
    "Self control" is desirable.
If you break down into tears and can not continue in any form of debate then you are not prepared to lead anyone because you can not control your own self and actions by just the mere use of THE "WORD"...
What gives anyone the right to decide what TRUTH can be had and what TRUTH can not be had? The TRUTH is something we observe and obey and no one is the dictator of it. Truth is a property of it's own and we are merely users of it and ues it matters how that is treated... the TRUTH was, long before any of these people on this panel, and none of them created it. Infact the TRUTH is not made up or changeable because it stands without offense. The TRUTH is the most holy thing know of... and you honestly think I would let any of you dictate that for me???? I think not! Infact God forbid it.....
If your incapable of hearing certain speech then your not fit to judge to judge fairly. The TRUTH is the judge and there is none other... why do you think they break down so fast when they hear the TRUTH spoken.... because there is no argument against the TRUTH that can be made....

It strikes me that those opposing no-platforming are confusing the right to free speech, with the right to an audience, and that they are implying an obligation on that audience to listen. Their argument further implies that those without the opportunity to have their views aired on TV, radio, newspaper and stage, are de facto censored. For their argument to hold true, free speech would not actually be a right, it would be a priviledge, one afforded only to those who can access a 'stage' for their speech.
Free speech means you are not arrested when you speak, that you cannot be oppresed by the state when you speak. It does not mean that any private third party is obligated to provide you an audience, or that any audience is obligated to listen.

Some bloke he is using that man as an example who would do harm if he was allowed a platform. Julian Assange is without conscience and would endanger people without a second thought. Hope that clears it up.

that's it in a nutshell. those opposing No Platforming protect ALL people''s rights. those wanting No Platforming deny rights to potentially 50% of society.
and ONLY THEY determine what deserves a platform.
very dangerous, even to themselves -- but too stupid to understand that.

Perhaps, now, men also predominantly wear a shop-tied tie on an elastic?

In a 2015 essay for the Australian publication The Quadrant, entitled The fall of the meritocracy, under a section headed “Progressive eugenics”, Young proposed that poorer people should be helped to choose which embryos were allowed to develop, based on intelligence.
My proposal is this: once this technology [genetically engineered intelligence] becomes available, why not offer it free of charge to parents on low incomes with below-average IQs? Provided there is sufficient take-up, it could help to address the problem of flat-lining inter-generational social mobility and serve as a counterweight to the tendency for the meritocratic elite to become a hereditary elite. It might make all the difference when it comes to the long-term sustainability of advanced meritocratic societies.

Toby Young: No platforming is wrong, unless it's applied to someone whom I disagree with, like Julian Assange, in which case it's great.

More polarization, though useful for pointing at proof and proving the point if nothing else.
Unfortunately for Toby, freedom of speech isn't an inalienable right even in the definition he uses. Rather, it's a luxury that's now necessary, and one we have to keep, defend and nurture due to how much benefit it's allowed our civilization to have- including the growing knowledge of what pitfalls it helps avoid.
