    Wow ! I worked for Oldsmobile in the late 60s to 70s did many 400, 425 and 350 trans and a few Jetaways , very long time ago , didn’t. Know all the secrets like you do or the psi ? , did go to GM school. In Tarrytown for trans and the GM AC compressor ! Switch over to forklifts and did diesel, propane and electric for 50 years as a road mechanic! , your very good better then I ever was ! Watching you is fantastic! 👍🏻👍🏻

    I’m a very accomplished mechanic, but definitely not what I would consider a transmission guy. Your videos continue to inspire me to not be afraid of the things, and I truly appreciate your contributions to a dying skill. There are a bunch of people who think they know how to rebuild a trans, only a few like you. Unlimited thank you’s for your videos.

    I just retired from the transmission business as an RnR man. I started in 84-ish. I did some building back in the 90s, including most of the GM rear-wheel drives. I couldn't stand still at the bench; it drove me crazy, so I returned to the floor. I was fast and good enough to make a builder's wage in the mid-90s, so that's where I stead. I love seeing the old stuff, and I love your channel.

      @@donaldhalls2189 I know, I used to rebuild the suckers ~ we had a pile of dead cases out the back about 1metre high...these were notorious for destroying cases ;) The problems started with the HQ...the 202 red motor put the TH180 on the absolute limit, and the 308 v8 destroyed them regularly (should've always had a TH350 behind it ;

    There is no better feeling than having the new felt, rubber moldings and weatherstrips replaced on those GM trucks. That material simply ages and gets stiff and hard making the overall operation of windows and door closures a pain. Good for you to do it correctly for your customer. Most shops only do just passable average work...I hope there is a fuse between the battery and those electric windows.
    Good information as usual, to know some details about items like those "case savers". Just because they are "made to save" a case doesn't mean they are worthy. So many products are out there that claim good and are not.

We put it in a 79 chevy Malibu 2 door 400sb wit tht new Trans man ohhh man back in 1995 it was all my brother's project his car I bought it tho a year later when he want buy 88 monte ss. The good old days. We use to think $1.78 per gal was high. Anyways these transmission IMHO was a great add on for tht car. U could tell the difference right away. But the 1 we had was all black transmission and stall both.

      What good is forgiveness when you don't show your kids the way home? You speak about having an additive in it. When I saw the pan when you pulled it off immediately seen that it had an additive in it because your transmission fluid will “Fish Eye” in the pan if you’ve got any sorts of additive in it, a lot of people that have a transmission that’s acting foolish as far as slipping or leaking and say the owner of the vehicle works at a car lot and he wants to take it to the sale and get rid of it rather than have the transmission rebuilt they will take a half a bottle of brake fluid and pour in too the transmission and what that does is the brake fluid will soften up those seals just like the low/reverse piston were really hard if left in brake fluid mixture long enough that seal will soften back up but the seal don’t know when to stop softening up and swelling up. That is the reason they get rid of the vehicle because it will work good in there for about two months depending on how much you put in it but what happens is the seals keep on and keep on and keep on softening up and additive keeps working on them and eventually you will blow the seals plum out of it and the transmission will go plumb out. I always hated building one that when you would tear it down you would see those fish eyes in the transmission fluid in the pan because it is so hard to get that additive out of there even after you put the transmission through the VAT cleaning it and everythingand all the internals

    What’s the difference between aTH350 and a TH400 transmission? Older cars I drove all had the 400

    • @stevenbaker5099
      @stevenbaker5099 21 день тому +1

      The TH-350 is for the smaller engines, while the TH-400 is for the larger engines.
      TH-400 came out in 1964. It is the heavy-duty 3-speed that was put in trucks and cars that had the Big-Block/High horsepower.
      TH-350 came out in 1969 as a light-duty 3-speed for Small-Block/lower horsepower.
      There are two types of bell housing patters: Chevrolet and B-O-P (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac).
      You can tell the difference with the transmission pan. TH-400 has a somewhat Rhombus shaped design, while the TH-350 is almost square with the RS Rear corner is at 45 degrees in a corner.

      (Edit)He actually talked about that in one of his videos, and he doesn't usually record the build because he's in work mode and can't have any distractions. He focuses on the build with 100% attention and having a camera there with someone asking questions might distract him and when building something as complex as a transmission by yourself, I'm sure you need every bit of brain power focused on the objective. He could but up a bunch of go pros and just let them record and have someone else do the editing.

    I’m sorry, but I’m gonna have to disagree with you on that wavy cushion steel that goes into your second gear clutches because I always leave that out and add an extra steel to it. That’s perfectly flat. Yes it shifts hard but if you’ve got a hardened Sprague race and good internals you’re fine. I’ve never knock on wood never have I ever had a pump come out or even get loose now I’ve had some bolts stripped from where I put them in and somebody tampered with my impact, but yeah, I’ve never had any problem whatsoever out of it and I have probably built 10,000
    350 transmissions.
    Love you guys you do awesome work. I’ve learned a lot myself from watching you and I really do appreciate your videos. .

    They check ball that you said you could not tell us what it done. If you leave it out the transmission will free wheel at whatever speed say say if you’re doing 80 mile an hour on the interstate and you let off the throttle your vehicle is almost like you put it in neutral. It goes straight to idle when you let off the throttle. Then when you give it throttle again, it revs up until it catches up with whatever speed and RPM you’re doing.
    You don’t ever want to leave that check ball out because other than it being aggravating as hell it can damage your transmission. It’s almost like putting it in neutral, revving the engine up and dropping it in gear, so it’s a no no.
