The explanation of this preference of marching is that more than 120 steps a minute in a march requires immense athleticism and synchronization event you do it for a few minutes. Remember, race-walking is an Olympic sport. And these soldiers are doing that in coordination and carrying arms. this looks funny but also is an athletic and military performance.
The reason is they conmemorate a maech that the legión make in África ti make a amission of suport, they make it un a few hours to get there
As former high school band geek, I call bullshit we did it at 150-160 and were fine. They are Spanish pussies.
So there's 4 military units in my knowledge to have a quick march in 140 steps per minute: 🇪🇸 Spanish Legion, 🇬🇧 Rifles Regiment, Brigade of Gurkhas, and 🇨🇵 Chasseurs Light Infantry
Yes, but... military parade is not a competition like Olympic Games. Right? Besides, more distinguished and less irritating to the ears is Le Boudin (French Foreign Legion march). To me, this march is too fast and the soldiers movements are exaggerated, which makes it look grotesque.

These guys are tough (like the French but not quite the same) I worked with both French and Spanish legion in Mostar Bosnia and they are extremely effective. You don't want to mess with either group that's for sure.

andy99ish na mate they just look bent as fuck. The German goosestep is seen today to be an impractical march and uses to much of the soldiers stamina yet in WW2 they were one of the best armies in the world so having some gay strut march and showing of ur skin shows no skill or determination.
@@Normalguy1690 This is the step they marched in the Rif War about 100 years ago when Melilla was under siege - they managed to get there just in time to save the city; so they adopted it ever since as a remembrance thing. This was Franco's regiment, by far the most effective of the Spanish armed forces in the Rif War and to this day very traditionalist - pretty much every one of those guys is a very committed Catholic.

Hard to say that they look very professional, but their loyalty to their banner and their king is clearly visible. I wouldn't want them in a combat zone. Still, it's nice to watch them at their ceremony. Especially the tune played by the pipe band is wonderful.

This perfectly encapsulates the Legión, heirs to the Tercios, they were first raised as shock troops drawn from people with (to say the least) dubious pst, they are the only unit in Spain that “seeks death” they wear their shirt unbuttoned because you “don’t close the door to a lady (death)” the parade uniform is still good enough for battle to this day.
They’re so disciplined, so gun ho that Spanish Special Forces are primarily drawn from the Legion.
The goat is a callback to their expeditionary unit origins as they brought them as a source of milk and meat for long drawn campaigns in the north of Africa

I came because I had read about the controversy surrounding a proposed memorial in Madrid. The article said that they had a "distinctive marching style", but I didn't expect this!
Although I agree with a lot of the comments (Village People, etc), I can also see how they have gained their rather negative press. Even North Korea's or Russia's massed ranks of soldiers do not come across as threatening as this rather small number from the Legión. They may not use it (officially) today, but their motto of "Long Live Death" seems very appropriate.
