I bought the CHEAPEST Flail Mower I could Find!

- I picked up this old Ford Flail mower. They were produced from 1956 to 1972. This is a fine cut flail mower, and has the Y shaped knives. It's made for cutting grass, not brush like you'd normally see. I change out the gear oil, grease it, and send it. First I test it by cutting my lawn, then move into my back field with taller grass.

Looks good. A new set of knives and she should cut even better!
That’s what I’m thinking!
0-1minute. Such a beautiful site. A child learning how to get things done. So often today people dont take the time. In 2020 I dug and installed nearly a full septic with my then 1yr old son. He was on my back for everything but the pipe glueing and rock hammering. He wears ear muffs.
Yeah I try to involve him as much as possible when we’re getting stuff done! He’s a big fan of mowing the lawn
@@EverythingElliott so is mine. At 3 he alreaty knows what type of screw driver to use and what its called.
Doesn't look like it's in bad shape. You can't grease the roller enough! That was the only problem My Dad had with His.
No doubt about that! Even after greasing you could still hear it squeaking!
Have the same mower picked it up for $100 then spend another $250 on new Y blades. Cut quality is like a zero turn with new blades and can run pretty fast.
Where did you get the blades from? And how did you connect them? The current set up has welded rings holding the current blades on
I tuned in to see the flail mower. I'm looking for something to start with to fabricate to cut around my lagoon. I became less interested when I noticed the OBS Super Duty back there! Were you lucky enough to find it or smart enough to have bought it new and kept it. NEVER get rid of it! I want to see a video on the truck now. 🤣
I found it…years ago actually, told the old timer that owned it I was buying it when he was ready to sell. That day finally came a couple years ago. I have a bunch of videos of it if you look under the playlists on my channel you’ll see a playlist dedicated to it
@EverythingElliott I bought new in 1991 the same truck except a port injected 460. People are fighting to find those oldpower strokes now! I hauled a 53 Ford dual tandem axle grain truck with an oak box on it from the Middle of Nebraska to Kansas City a/c on in OD and it never grunted. It had 4:10.1 limited slip axles. That big block long stroke and the gears with OD that truck did anything I asked. I need it back! 😐
nice video, well filmed and edited. good production.....
Thank you! That’s encouraging to hear as I have no formal training in any of this video stuff…
new knives and it'll be as good as new , try it in some really tall stuff , see how well it compares to a brush mower. 👍
That’s what I’m thinkin, some new knives and we will be in business! It seemed to work well in the field behind my pond, even with the dull knives!
I have a similar old flail and it doesn't do well in tall stringy grass/weeds. Anything over 18inchs it tangles up around the drum and burns the belt. In smaller brush it works better actually. Ground needs to be really flat.
A rotary blade bushhog is a better tool unless you want a finish mower. Good blades and flat ground the old flails probably do good on flat grass 12 inchs of less.
Do you think the PTO shaft came out because it's too short for your tractor? Brand new you have to cut them to length for your particular tractor
Yeah, that’s certainly part of the issue, I can set the top link a little shorter to cut the grass lower and should get me a little more real estate on the shaft
My mowing attire as well 😂
gotta be comfy on those Saturday afternoons!
Yo E, you might have to build another shed just to put all your implements in
yeah no kidding...I need to come up with some sort of solution, because they are overtaking the space behind my shop, its getting a little out of control. I have 3 new implements since I got this one that I'm working on videos for. My wife is ready to kill me.
What’s the name of the music used for this video
The songs are listed at the bottom of the video description
Why you take the bucket off to mow
less out Infront of the tractor, makes it easier to turn around and get closer to the brush line.
should be set lower
Yeah I figured that out
