Billy Goats refuse to lie down as Mainz pay the penalty
FC Cologne were given a lifeline in their Bundesliga survival bid after a stoppage-time penalty salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with FSV Mainz, keeping the hosts in relegation danger thanks to their three-match winning home run coming to an end.
It was decided that this match would go ahead despite the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in the stadium’s vicinity in the week, but there was no early explosion on the pitch as both sides were intent on avoiding going behind. Neither team was short of a motive, but it was perhaps Mainz’s recent form that gave them greater confidence, and Sepp van den Berg forced Marvin Schwäbe into a smart save from the centre of the area.
Spurred on from there by a fervent home crowd and a three-match winning streak at this venue, Mainz found particular joy on the break, where they notched the opening goal. Jonathan Burkardt - who has been so influential in his side’s resurgence of late - started the attack, with Karim Onisiwo’s effort parried by Schwäbe, allowing Leandro Barreiro to finish into the open net. The hosts headed into the break on top and on course for a sixth match unbeaten, and could even have had a second as Burkardt fired over.
With defeat here meaning a return to the second tier would be an almost certainty, Cologne were granted a lifeline when Faride Alidou was taken down by Anthony Caci in the area just after the restart, but Luca Waldschmidt catastrophically rolled wide - his first career penalty miss at senior level. Mainz briefly remained on top, but the away side began to search desperately for an equaliser as the match reached its final 20 minutes. Benno Schmitz fired one at Robin Zentner from a tight angle, before Alidou hit over following a swift counter.
A lack of inventiveness in attack made it clear why Cologne are the division’s lowest scorers, but there was to be one final twist in the tale in the visitors’ favour. Zentner clattered Sargis Adamyan as he rushed out to punch a cross, leading Benjamin Brand to point to the spot. Florian Kainz was given taking duties, and he succeeded where Waldschmidt had failed, keeping Cologne’s remote hopes of survival alive. Two points dropped for Mainz was made even worse by Phillipp Mwene’s red card for a high challenge just before the end, and the big celebrations will be in Darmstadt, who could still theoretically stay up thanks to the late goal.
Man of the Match: Leandro Barreiro (FSV Mainz)
