I make wall art all the time as my main product. Helpful tip:
After you rip the boards (weather fence pickets or a 2x-whatever), let the ripped boards "rest" for a few days. There is a good chance they may twist and warp, and you don't want that happening on the product.

I learned this the hard way when I did a tabletop. I planed, used a track saw for glue joints and then glued up next day. I should have waited, because once you cut, that tension releases and suddenly things start moving around. That's basically why I don't work with anything less than 8/4 and ideally 12/4 because final thickness depends on how well it's behaving with twists, bows, etc. Woodworking is hard and rewarding, but it's got pains that we cannot control well at times lol.

For the square wall art, consider using quilt block patterns as templates for your cuts. People recognize the patterns and most are pretty straightforward, repeated geometric shapes.

"Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength.”
I worked in corporate HR for 30+ years and hated most of it. Laid off at 59 y/o and I was so angry. Realized I needed a way to work through that anger and started woodworking like my dad had done. I love it and I’m getting good at it. Made blanket ladders as gifts for Christmas using crepe myrtle wood for the rungs. They were a hit. The manager of my local Habitat Restore (where I shop for finds!) has asked if I might donate some of my palette wood creations for them to sell. I get free marketing and Habitat gets a bit of extra cash to fund projects and inspire others to shop there. Out of my anger has come peace and a strong sense of purpose.

I love your story and so appreciate your sharing it! A Helen Keller quote that stuck with me throughout life is the closed door outlook. "When one door of happiness closes, another opens. But often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us." You know, the "if a door closes, look for a window" approach. haha
All of life is about perspective and our willingness--or lack thereof--to live in the question, live in the moment, ask and explore "what else is possible?", and have fun with the plot twists. 😉 Have a blast writing this & upcoming chapters!!!

Or for a more widespread twist... how about not using your cnc, laser cutter, and engraver to batch a bunch of crap out without any work and then charging the same price as someone who just did it all either completely manually or dang close. Maybe I went a little far for your "devil's advocate" type response, but I think the point is there. When I was in school, I made a grave mistake during the last step of my final shop project. It was a tool chest that was supposed to have a 1/4 inch round over finish along the edge of the lid. I forgot to set the router depth. As I was cutting I realized I cut too deep but it was too late to fix it. I felt so bad. I called my instructor Mike over and told him what I did. He lowered his glasses and went tsk, tsk, tsk. Lol. He then told me something I will never forget. He said, "emphasize your mistake" then walked away. So I lowered my depth even further to give it a 1/8 edge then the round over finish. I handed it in for a final grading. Mike told me it was his favorite tool chest in the whole class. But i got the lowest mark for not following directions 😂. All in all, it was a fun learning experience.

Matthew, I took your design philosophy and created a new product that one of my customers really enjoyed. She bought 9 of them for Christmas presents.
So basically, it uses those furring strips that cost about $3 each. Cut those into lengths of about 10-12" long. After jointing the mating edges, I use a slot cutting bit to put an 1/8" slot into those edges. I had some laser cut tags left over from a previous project, so I cut those down to be the biscuits for the slots. After gluing up the panels, I painted them with white milk paint and a couple coats of lacquer to act as a buffer in a future step. Put on a paper mask and then it's off to the laser to engrave a bible verse into the front. After the laser cuts a deep channel, I like up to 1/8" deep, then I paint the engraving with black chalk paint. Once that's dry, peel the mask, use a plastic putty knife to remove all the tiny bits of mask, and then sand off the excess black. The lacquer layers act as a buffer so I don't sand through to the bare wood as easily. Distress as normal. Then apply paste wax for protection.
Maybe I'll make a full build vid, but I posted a couple shorts on my IG.

Matt Great video as always. I just wanted to ask two things. For the items that are trending how do you find them? When you look at PB or P1 do you look at the main page of the website or are there other sources that you look at?
This next one (not a question but a statement) took me a while to word because I did not want to come off as an a$$. I really love your work. When you say low cost and high profit you only mention the cost of materials. That is fine. If there are new people to this, they should know that from that profit they have to take their pay for their time on making the item. If it takes them all day to make then that profit is not as good as they thought. For me, profit is made after material and labor are paid for. I do see that you mainly pick the easier things to make. That will hopefully keep down the time on making the item. I think that you also mentioned in your earlier videos on making one vs making 10 items and you make more money batching items out. I am going to stop typing now. I have babbled long enough. :) I think that I am trying to say is for the new people you will definitely want to batch out the items Matt is suggesting in these videos to have a bigger profit per item.
Sorry for the babbling. Thanks again Matt for the awesome video.

Just appreciate your encouragement as we who are creative, and try new projects will make mistakes. Thank you. My husband and I with our sons have been building a log cabin....for 5 years. Mistakes made along the way as we go, but finally have it in enough shape to partially live in it, with still more work to go, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.....
My mom's advise (parents were divorced) was to take everything one day at a time. Also, I have learned that there truly is more than one way to skin a cat. (Just a saying....we have two cats that we love.) When I am up against a problem that seems impossible the way I want to do it, it seems the Lord always makes a way for me to figure it out. Always! He is good! He has given us the brain to figure things out, and provides. So thankful!

HAS ANYONE HAD A PROBLEM WITH FENCE PICKETS "SHRINKING"? I made something for a Xmas gift in Nov. Basically 5 16" lengths of fence picket glued together with a deer head silhouette cut out. By Xmas I had 3/16" gaps between a few of the boards. Im assuming they shrunk from drying inside for a few weeks, but that seems excessive

Like Thomas Edison when they asked him how he felt about failing over 10,000 times when inventing the lightbulb. He said “I didn’t fail, I learned 10,000 ways how NOT make a lightbulb”. I know absolutely nothing about woodworking but am fascinated by all these ideas and techniques. I live in an apartment and my neighbors would kill me, so do you have any smaller ideas (besides the nest of sticks) that wouldn't require loud machinery, OR how does one go about renting space without fear of having their newly acquired equipement/tools/product mysteriously disappear? You're amazing so thank you for sharing so much!

I am a biscuit man myself..depending on the application.... dowels are I feel structurally superior to a biscuit just because the dowel is inserted into each side of the joint with whatever length you can use depending on the dimensions of the project. I use both.
I also use pocket screws like the Kreg fastening systems.... put a line of glue down the board and run a screw about 2"-4" apart depending on the application and you have a super strong joint without having to work thru your dado set for the correct dado shim or setting up one of the messiest machines in the shop, the ROUTER bum bum bum........I have enclosed my table and put both the shop vac and my dust collector to the base and they still throw sawdust everywhere and in a one car garage size shop.... it get's on everything.
LOL Anyhoo, another great video as always brother, I appreciate the quality of the video's you produce and you move through the project at the perfect pace so my old brain can keep up. Sometimes I gotta backup and do quick WTF did I miss??? That's just due to my hair getting grayer and all of the years of people yelling dimensions to me. For 30+ years I was the ground guy on siding and windows jobs and the sawyer during most larger building or remodeling jobs. I would have 1 or up to 4 walkie talkies on my prep/lumber holding table and the guys would tell me what they were going to need and I would cut and deliver if it was just 1 or 2 guys but depending on what the job was I would have a kid run lumber for me. The ground guy (me at 12 years old) on a window or siding job is responsible for the look of the job because they guys applicating the products cannot see how the products look in the big picture because they are right up against the house. Depending on if it was a full building or something with an addition etc. I would work straight off of the prints if they were available or I would draw my own quick prints for my sense of direction and labeling products for each room for keeping track of inventory, my step dad had me running a crew of 3 guys when I was 16 without him there and the guys were not happy that a kid was calling the shots. By 16 I already had 8 summer vacations on the job learning how things were built so I had more experience than most of the applicators on the crew. I developed my own way of getting them to do what I wanted. It was pretty rough for the first couple of jobs and I got pushed around a couple of times but it all worked out.
I did an independent study of architecture my Senior year. I had one of the 2 super large tables in the classroom that had a great big drafting machine (Arm)on them and I spent 2 hours everyday drawing the complete blueprints for my "dream house". They were all hand drawn because it was the mid-80's and computers were still the size of room. I had to draw a complete set of working prints that were actually "blued" and they had to have the proper information and drawings done so anyone could build the house without any problems. The master set of residential blueprints are actually dark blue in color. Blued. (used to be anyway) I also printed off and bought a few of the renderings I did of the outdoor land and the house done in perspective. It was 7300+ square foot 2 story walkout basement. The entire house had 10' high walls and I actually had a 10' basement under my 10' walkout basement. 20' tall poured walls with beam pockets and also places for the joices on the concrete. 2 beams in both basements walls which allowed me to hide all of the wire, pipe, ductwork etc. The house also had a 3rd floor "attic" with exposed beams, eyebrow windows and a "widow' peak" (I think that's the name of it )which on old old farm houses there is a 6' tall square structure built up out above the roof so that a woman could stand watch for her husband to return from war.
I was going to have hidden passageways with hidden doors in each room that all led to like a saferoom. My drafting teacher told me that I was getting kind of carried away. He gave me extra credit for the double basement. He had never seen or thought of that before he said. When I completed it and it was a series of like I think 30 drawings or for some reason 36 drawings is coming back to me. It was pretty awesome until if fell off the shelf in the closet and my girlfriends cat pissed all over that giant envelope all weekend while we had gone up to Michigan from Ft. Wayne In. where I was going to school for architecture at ITT Tech..... what a waste of money that was. They gave you a picture of a house and told us which drawings they wanted. I actually said
"that's just great, sounds like fun" NOT!
I apologize for the rambling on and on....... so ahead and kill this if you want Matthew
    Sorry brother!
    Peace

That first shelf sucks. I’d rather build floating shelves and custom finished cabinets/dressers/tv stands/mantles. The wall art is not impressive, I like to build things that I am impressed by, and that takes a good amount of time/energy and selling for a significant amount. Some of these projects would bore me and if I don’t like it and it doesn’t capture my attention I can’t feel good about building it, unless someone specifically asks for something that’s worth the time.
