The guys from South Park said it best. Either everyone can be made fun of, or no one can. And it’s when someone starts dictating who can be made fun of that true bigotry begins.

Wokeism is rooted in Marxism. Just read “Animal farm" and see how they slowly change the laws on the wall . They are slowly and constantly changing the language so you can not get a handle on it. Also re-read “1984”, they re-wright history so they can force the discussion to be only from their perspective. And of course they have their regular hour of rage as well. It’s also in “1984”

It's sure to be cancelled. Wasting their "platforms" to spread the idea that people should be listening to each other? What fascism! What bigotry! And doing it so calmly! usually it is because people have seen the type of behaviour before and that probably lead to physical violence or something else unpleasent. It's weird to asume that people are offended because they are shitty people. When it's obvious and pretty common knowledge that people are cautious for reasons like past experience and trauma.
It's crazy to think that we live in a time where grown ups and adults have to be forced by law to treat other people with respect. Hatecrime laws are being expanded and enforced in most of the world right now. Because people who pay taxes and vote are incapable of treating other people with respect. I don't see how this makes any sense??? you aren't capable of treating others with common respect. Then wtf are you able to vote ?

“Political correctness is America's newest form of intolerance, and it is especially pernicious because it comes disguised as tolerance. It presents itself as fairness, yet attempts to restrict and control people's language with strict codes and rigid rules. I'm not sure that's the way to fight discrimination. I'm not sure silencing people or forcing them to alter their speech is the best method for solving problems that go much deeper than speech.” -George Carlin

The same thing has happened with feminism. What seems to have started off as a fight for equal rights and pay has turned into one side of the population saying things like chivalry is dead, while the other bemoans mansplaining and proclaims that men aren't actually needed in society anymore. I'm afraid to offer my help to anyone I see struggling these days lest I be berated for assuming a woman is incapable.

To be entirely honest: that has to be incredibly frustrating for many people. The idea that people are always putting on some show of the character they decide to be when talking to others with immutable characteristics, instead of just keeping it 100-ish (maybe like 95% lol?)
I have limited experience with that, yet I do kinda know how that feels in a roundabout way...and society is definitely encouraging it via social media narcissism, identity politics machinations and virtue signaling.
Thankfully, offline, that concept is less prevalent. That is almost the origin of the "go touch grass" meme to a degree.
And people often forgive the faux pas false steps of people just speaking more freely (within reason, and in good faith of course). The internet...less so.

What is your definition of self-censorship?
I’ve always thought of it as your own decision to not use curse words in your speech, or choosing not to go see Saw IV because you don’t like gore. Not that you’re trying to censor other people.
My definition of self-censorship I think is perfectly healthy. You should not have to be exposed to something you don’t want to see (in terms of entertainment). But it’s your responsibility to do so. SELF-Censorship.
I absolutely despise censorship, but I also believe people should be responsible enough to make their own decisions on what media they consume.

Blazing Saddles followed a trend that Mel Brooks was so good at. He pushed the boundaries in order to take down the people on the wrong side of history. Look at The Producers where they have a musical production that tries to glorify Hitler with songs like "Springtime For Hitler". To Be Or Not To Be was another pop at Hitler with that fantastic spoof song of the same name. As a Jewish producer, writer and performer people couldn't accuse him of being anti-semitic (boy has that changed these days). Nor could they lambast him for running around in a Nazi uniform (not like they could today at least). But he was following the grand tradition engaged in by Charlie Chaplin of ridiculing the ridiculous. Chaplin of course had a pop at Hitler. So did George Formby whose character actually punches Hitler in the chops. Cartoons galore did the same. But in an attempt to silence the dissenters the Right (and it IS mostly the Right) have made it verboten to talk about certain things in jest because you must be serious and it must be offensive. Especially if you're attacking the establishment. This isn't new. This has been going on for millenia.

What John Cleese said at the end is so true. Friends can ridicule each other. This was the basis of the Roasts that Dean Martin used to host. They all loved each other and they roasted each other.
In Australia, they tried this once but their humour was very rude and insulting to the guest person and it never landed right. It was canned after 1 episode. The insults were too personal and not from a place of friendship.

Wokeism generally isnt top down, and largely comes from the populace itself, and is only really a problem in its extreme form, where identities are more important than the individual. It has filtered into the mainstream politics through the 'normal jobs' in government such as teaching and the civil service, and into mainstream culture through social media through activists and younger (often more naive) people, who spend a lot more time on social media, and therefore their opinions are overrepresented there. Politicians lean into it sometimes because they see votes there, I dont believe they actually care. Thats my simplified reading of the situation anyway.

If politeness is hypocrisy then they are right to reject it and pursue justice instead. I hope they continue being aggressive because old men will bully and lie to get what they want, so bullying and telling the truth to achieve a bit of fairness is far better. Two old men whining about why they're no longer liked, it's pathetic and anyone angry at university students when they're primarily children still working the world out is a pathetic loser of an old man or somebody who sticks their nose way up old people ass.

When people look at the past through rose coloured glasses they are looking at an alternative reality that never existed. Have they forgotten Lenny Bruce? This was a million years before the word Woke was ever coined as a phrase. He used adult words in his stand up act and police would wait in the nightclub ready to pounce on him as soon as he said a banned word. So, he used "Blah" to replace all words that were banned. But, the grown up and intelligent audience knew what the word "Blah" represented. So the authorities had him arrested for saying "Blah" in his act because it put an 'unacceptable thought' in the minds of the people watching. For example, he would ask a female member of the audience: "Have you ever Blahed a man's Blah?". The woman and the audience knew what he was inferring but he never actually said it. Yet, he was arrested. So please don't pretend that this is something new that was invented by the Left. This was a branch of McCarthyism instigated by the Right way before the Wokeism blamed on the Left was a twinkle in an oppressed minority's eye.

@@trevorberridge6079 Your patronizing dismissive and misapplied opening sentence reflects an overly emotional response from you, and much more telling than you had likely told yourself. Lenny Bruce was a both a different era and a vastly different case than these guys' considerable experience, get your stories straight. He was also a long time drug addict and alleged fraudster, who had one conviction for an obscenity charge - offensive words, just like hate speech. Folks are getting arrested and jailed for that once again..
And McCarthyism was long before them as well, and ironically pales in comparison to today's repeat of it..
Cleese clearly states that the "righteously offended" in his time tended to consider themselves on the political "right" (his term, not mine) while today the "righteously offended" consider themselves on the political "left" (again, their term). But in his time nobody was getting arrested - on the contrary, it's popularity was ubiquitous and completely free. They had truly progressed much further by then.. until now.
Their entire convo and point is the freedom of speech and ideas from tyranny and its inevitable oppression. Whether that tyranny cloaks itself in the "right" or the "left" is immaterial, save for the use of those manufactured "group" dividers to keep you emotionally toeing the line.. not unlike any other gangs. Sounds like you've got yourself hooked.
