I'm not that much into character design, but the way I use the silhouette first technique when making new things is keeping my obsevation in mind: It tends to work the best in two extremes. When you're not so familiar with the subject matter that you're doing and it grately improves your result if you mess around with silhouettes to stumble upon something interesting, and when you know exactly what you're doing and you could almost make it with eyes closed. For anything in between I stick to careful construction.

I can wholeheartedly recommend anthony jones for shillouette studys and info! Also have you tried to use a fully opaque brush and eraser for shillouette work? I find that it helps me make more bold and better shapes.
Anthony Jones is an expert when it comes to silhouettes imo! 😤 And yeah I have used a opaque brush for silhouettes, but tbh I don’t prefer it over the pressure sensitive brush, idk why I guess I’m just weird like that 😂 but my eraser is almost always opaque! 😎

One thing I know about silhouettes is that Superheroes will always have strongest silhouettes ever. You can tell Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Hulk from just their silhouette.
