    My grandmother has painted for most of her life. She worked with watercolor, oil and acrylics. But mostly watercolor. I would always go in her studio when I was a little girl and be amazed at all of the cool things she had in it. I looked up to her. She always pushed me to be creative and tell me I could do anything. She’s getting older now and losing the strength in her hands and can’t paint anymore. Yesterday I was surprised with a bunch of her supplies that she has had for years. One thing was this vintage wooden box that slides open has these large pans of watercolors inside. I thought of you immediately and thought “omg Kristy would love to see this!” So I had to share with you 🥰
    Thank you for being YOU. And for teaching us all of the things about watercolor and how to always be kind to ourselves 💓 ✨

    You make me smile so yes I am watching this video. I learn something all the time. I am 75 and disabled but you have encouraged me even when I can’t paint. I have watched others on UA-cam over the past 2 years , since watercolor is easier on my hands . You helped me find my joy and lose the tension that came from trying to follow all the rules. My son is buying me your brushes for Christmas. Thank you for all you do for us fearful beginners and joyless perfectionists.

    I do watercolor portraiture and I LOVE Holbein. They’re beautifully opaque, they mix together in just the right ways, the color selection they offer is really nice and really gives bright, colorful and beautiful options to work with. The fact that they are so controllable makes them soooo easy to use for small details. I use a tiny brush and it’s almost like drawing with watercolor. But small dark details like eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows and freckles are all made 100x easier with Holbein. I only need a tiny bit of water because they’re so moist already, and I can make a decently thick, beautiful and controllable paint. I love Asian style watercolors. I use Paul Rubens for studies and sketchbook sessions, I use Super Vision for special effects, and I use Mijello Mission Gold for character design and urban scenes. While I have, use and love W&N, Sennelier and Daniel Smith, I just find Holbeins to be unique and be very special.

    To me, I feel like they lay down like butter, very smooth. I recently was painting a Monarch butterfly and used watercolor pencils as a base, then used Holbein watercolor for the layers on top. I was shocked on the intensity of color I was able to get. It looked like the butterfly was jumping off the paper. ❤

    Your videos has inspired me SO MUCH! I was having an art/creative block for a while and haven’t touched my paint in months.
    After watching your videos and seeing your amazing art- My husband (by request) bought me your watercoloring book & invested in more Holbein paints🤗🤗🤗
    Previously I only purchased one color (jaune w232) and I got a small dot card from the company. I’m a W&N girl 😊
    I CANT WAIT until Mother’s Day so I can paint with my new colors in my new book!

    Just today, the mail person brought me my order of Holbein Horizon Blue. I'm adding it to a small (21 half pans) travel palette for a trip. I inherited from my mother a small box (6 5 ml tubes) of Holbein watercolors years ago, and I just started using them. Love their viridian green, even 30+ years old.

    Hello Kristy! Because of your videos, I got a vintage crayon tin, to fill with watercolors. My husband just happens to have a 3d printer. He started printing me 1/2 pans, so I could fill a little palette. But he keeps printing me new pans. Comes upstairs, and drops a handful on my art table. So I just HAVE to keep getting more paints lol. I'm pretty new to watercolor, but I received both Holbeins and Paul Rubens for mother's day!! And I just got a "new" palette to fill. Have a great day, and thank you for all your videos! xo

    This was very helpful for me. I found your book at the library, picked up an interview with you at The Mind of Watercolor, and jumped over to check out your channel - and there was a picture of the very paints I’d been daydreaming and wondering about last month. Thank you for the creative palette adventure. I have watched your video on 7 Favorite Brands several times since I'm still building a collection I love and am very curious about Sennelier, I don't have any of their paints and even though you didn't seem overly enthused, the swatching looked beautiful. Christy, have you tried Qor watercolor paints? If you want WOW bright colors and insane pigment movement then Qor paints are for you. These paints have a totally different binder that is made solely to disperse through the water like nobody's business. I call my Qor paints my wild child as they are all over the page.

    I saw a blue-green (more green than blue) on your palette... I just bought Cobalt Green... states, "transparent" on Amazon.... it's opaque... even has white as one of the pigment numbers. It's PG18, PB28 AND PW6. I'm a beginner, but feel like "clueless" because it just didn't register with me. It's like gouache... wish Holbein had a dot card... Well, if you have another color suggestion- bring it on Kristy!!! Love listening to you!!! You're a great 👍 teacher and artist!!! Thank you for sharing! not sure if I understood you well at around time stamp 3:54 but.. you mentioned holbein doesn't have oxgal so it doesn't flow as much on the paper as W&N and DS did?
    but.. DS also don't use oxgal in their paints they are vegan except 3 colours, ivory black, sepia and payne's grey which are easily replaced by other colours of their collection. oxgal comes from gallbladder of cattle. about W&N I can't confirm whether they use oxgal or not as I can't find any info online about it.
    how DS paint have a good flow without using oxgal is their secret I think. Schmincke horadem surely have oxgal in their paints, their academy paints are vegan.

    Kristy, What do you think about QOR? I wonder if the QOR Aquasol would work with Holbein? I too love Holbein, but they are really expensive. And, I enjoy the way QOR tends to explode.

      Well I will say this….Art supplies are my thing. I don’t wear fancy clothes or collect bags or ya know… also every art supply I purchase is a business expense so there’s that, lol!! Holbein is def pricey though. I haven’t added to be original palette for years until recently 😅

    • @elledouai2145
      @elledouai2145 2 роки тому

      Ohhh you’re forcing me to admit that when I’m being spendy on art supplies- 🤣I do tell myself I don’t drink, I don’t gamble, I don’t snort coke so these art supplies aren’t nearly as expensive as those habits would be . Now if I could figure out how to make them a business expense that would be perfect. I’m glad you do show us these brands. Because if I did decide to invest I’d have confidence that I wouldn’t be buying something I know absolutely nothing about. ❤️

    I’m new to watercolor and have been using the Mozart Japanese Watercolor set. I find that after an hour or so of painting, the pans start to get sticky! Why is this/ do Holbein paints do the same?

    • @marytesta3003
      @marytesta3003 2 роки тому +1

      I am not an expert for sure but I think as the water begins to sink in the pigment it just becomes more sticky but it drys up. I do notice that sticky feel as I wet over and over.

    I just picked up a few vintage tins at a local antique store and the tins are pretty beat up, old paint, some rusty spots. Do you have any recommendations on how to clean them up and get them ready to be used again?

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  2 роки тому

      So to freshen up the interior of the tins: You could use some steel wool to remove any loose rust. Then look into a rustoleum spray paint in a soft white :) Several thin coats with a more steel wool abrasion in between :)

      @KristyRice  2 роки тому +1

      Professional for sure

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 2 роки тому +2

      Daniel Smith uses natural gum arabic for binder like almost all watercolor except for Qor (which is the only brand I know of that uses a synthetic binder). Ox gall isn't the only thing that creates dispersal, it's also how finely the paint is milled for example, i.e. Holbein is very finely milled, DS generally has bigger particles that move in water. Other nuances in the paintmaking also affects the pigment behavior, it's hard to know each paintmaker's process.

    Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints aren't watercolors, they are infact " Ganai Tambi paints". The Gansai Tambi paints are in a whole class of its own, they contain Hide glues and other ingredients that are not used in western/eastern watercolors. I own the entire 108 Holbein watercolors, and I do use the lightfast colors when I am using techniques that require no movement in water, and a bit more opaque. They are excellent for painting floral and Bontanical pieces... because I can use a wet into wet, and not have to worry about them spreading wildly out of control! Sorry for the FYI at the beginning of my comment, my OCD and pro artist protectionism made me write it hahahaha it's a friendly FYI, for those of you that didn't know they are different paints, in their own category. ohhh and I see you love vintage tins and palettes.... but I as well, own many brands of professional artist grade watercolor paints.... in their entire color ranges ( yes a fortune lol ) 140, 200, 360, etc etc... complete color ranges. So I buy those Robax plastic studio pallets that have 150 wells, with options of add on wells and attachments, for studio work. I also buy those plastic Paul Rubens plates that are " air tight " ( NOT ) and they have removable trays on both sides... I put my sets in those, because they can hold up to 140 full pans , and 260+ half pans each. I only use full pans, so it's a bit hard to find something that will hold alot of full pans, without taking up a ton of space ( the entire table top lol ) I don't like plastic palettes, I've always used metal and sprayed them with a special ceramic paint. But I was running out of space and spots in my studio and Bindery, for storing my watercolors... trying to find a place for 10 metal pallets containing a complete brand of paints.I fill the Paul Rubens entire palette with full pans anyways, so iam not using any pallete surface for mixing...I use sperate porcelain palettes that my brother custom makes for me. I see you buy alot of paint too, so it's something to think about lol... because the time will come when you have nowhere to put them, and more are coming into the door 🤣🤣 I've rambled and geeked out enough, hope you have a wonderful day 😊

    Dear Kristy, thx a lot! May I ask one question? Is there a way to take already dried colors out of the half pans and sort of repot them into another palette? I have a porcelain palette that I had set up. I want to redo them, but not all the colors (would be a shame and is too expensive) just take out and throw away. So I'm wondering, is there any way I can melt them down or do anything with them to reuse them and repot them into half pans? Thank you. I couldn’t find anything about this topic. I think it’s not possible to reuse dried paint from one palette into another

    • @hearterin294
      @hearterin294 2 роки тому +2

      I would take a flat scraper and try to pop them out. I bought one of those 36 colour White Nights palettes, and then dug out some of the paint out of a bunch of the pans and stuck them into a much smaller palette. I just wet the bottoms and they stuck onto the new palette easily.
      I would be a bit more hesitant about scraping out of a porcelain palette, as scratching is a possibility. Maybe wetting the edges will allow the edge of a palette knife to slide underneath more easily?
      You don’t need to melt them down, just plop them with a little dab of the original paint underneath, and it’ll dry that weird lump into the half pan.
      Good luck!!!
