- In each bi-monthly episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday at 2pm PST), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy. I think this is probably my favorite project of yours Jimmy. It's just such a simple project, fun and has a quick return with the lock and key that's useful, plus you learn something when you take it apart and put it back together to make it work. I must have watched this video more than 30 times already. Great video jimmy.
That... Was... AWESOME! Retro-engineering a key from the lock. Of course! Now that I've seen it, it makes perfect sense! Jimmy, you're a genius! That was amazingly cool.

I've watched quite a few of your vids, and I have to say, you're not only a craftsman in the things you build, but also the videos that you record: sparse and "bare", but also, for instance during the fast forward sections, very tonal and rhythmic. I don't know that you plan them that way or look at them like that, but if not, you have a inherent sense of the art of presentation.

Great job, cool to see ya take it apart and back engineer piece by piece and fine tune it and actually use it.. I always liked Skelton keys, probly bc in my old house we actually used them to lock/un bed rm/cupboard everything except the front and back dr.

Good lord I never realized how much work could go into making an old style key. The ridiculous fast forward made this really entertaining to watch.
Since this is an old lock I am wondering how the welded things before modern tools?

This is magnificent!
It is to prolong the life of the saw and to make it easier to cut. The oil lubricates the saw teeth and helps clear stuck metal fragments which would typically make the sawing more efficient. Without a lubricant, the metal bits would fill in the gaps between the saw teeth and the saw would essentially become a flat but of metal. With the oil, the metal bits do not stick into the spaces between the teeth and the saw will have more "teeth" available to cut the metal.
Would love to see more of these making key videos.
It's a TIG (tungsten inert gas) welder. A tungsten wire in the handle sends electricity into the base metal creating a very large spark essentially. The heat from this melts the base metals, allowing them to be welded together. The rod in his hand is extra filler metal to fill in the gap left behind. More or less oxy-acetylene welding, but with electricity instead.
We have an antique bathroom door that uses a skeleton key. But we have never had one for it. I bought 2 styles online that were suspected to work, but neither did. I would love to have a functioning lock...30 years here and never been able to lock our bathroom door. I would love to make one...if I had all the tools needed.

Nice key! I carry one on my keychain, most of the doors in my house still have old locks. Bet that would look great with some copper sulfate for that yeh olde key look.

but shouldnt you also have the mirror cuts in the key so it works from teh other side of the door also??
chuck it up in a drill press, use a file and sandpaper, and check your progress with an appropriate "go/no go" gauge. it might not be pretty, but it will work fine. and if you mean the dial calipers, they shouldn't cost you more than 15 bucks. if thats out of your price range, a set of leaf gauges and dividers shouldn't run you more than 7, and they can be used to infer the measurement.
For the sake of clear communication, two episodes a month is "semi-monthly". One episode every two months would be "bi-monthly".

Is a skeleton key a key that can open any small or large lock without the unique key cut specified for that particular lock
With some very basic tools you could to the same thing. The hardest part would be the welding, but there are ways to weld without a welder.
The base on the can of oil could be put in a Jimmy tips video.

If skeleton key created like this and the easiest or heaviest(item) difficulty, it is considered like a simple way right if quick rush for one or urgency "must be key", can i subject-buy and have ez job(if reproduce alot) on it? The key points will be unique right anyway?
