  • LIGHT RETURNED TO MADRID
The International Festival of Light, LuzMadrid, made its comeback on October 27, 28, and 29, 2023, gracing the streets and squares of Madrid with its radiant presence. Throughout three vibrant nights, art and light were enjoyed in specially chosen locations throughout the city.
Madrid was bathed in light by over twenty national and international artists, presenting works that offered a unique perspective of the city. In its second edition, the festival explored new locations, ensuring that this luminous constellation surprised, excited, and captivated both the people of Madrid and visitors.
The focal point of LuzMadrid this time was movement and vibration, portraying light as a creative force, the driving factor behind dreams and illusions.
The installations and artworks featured in LuzMadrid 2023 adhered to energy efficiency criteria and a reduction in carbon dioxide consumption, certifying the festival's commitment to sustainability. This commitment had already earned LuzMadrid the A Greener Festival award in its first edition, recognizing its environmentally friendly practices.
KONTAKT EXTENDED is a live architecture by Nicolas Paolozzi at the head of the production company Module that combines sound, light and movement. The public is immersed in a changing tide of atmospheres. Located in the Plaza de España, it is an interactive project that allows the public to play at altering certain aspects of their behavior. Even without external intervention, Kontakt Extended is always evolving, revealing its multiple faces, one after another, so that each mood immerses the viewer in a specific universe.
HURRICANE (A METEOROLOGICAL SYSTEM) is Eugenio Ampudia's piece for the Façade of the Royal Palace. A projection that reflects on the overwhelming force of the air.
Unlike earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, hurricanes are generated and develop as a result of known, visible and traceable variables. Their intensity and destructive power can be measured in time to prevent and minimize damage. A hurricane is the most defined and codified expression of how, when and why a potentially devastating natural phenomenon is formed.
The word "hurricane" also has great metaphorical value. It evokes force in its pure state, a sweeping thrust, it refers to a powerful signifier, it evokes the force of nature.
Moreover, the way in which a hurricane develops and unfolds is fascinating: it is of a primary simplicity and at the same time of an overwhelming scale.
The projection of the image of a hurricane confronts us with the endless creative and destructive power of nature, with its mystery. It reminds us that we must abandon pride, that we are small. It becomes a beautiful metaphor for the speed at which ideas are consumed and the intensity of the physical experience of their perception.
DETENER EL TIEMPO is the proposal of Juan Gómez-Cornejo for the monument of Alfonso XII in El Retiro Park. The creator, together with Illusion Stage, uses the fusion of music and light to sculpt the air, weave the water and inhabit the dreams. A creation that dialogues with the original authors of the monument with the aim of apprehending the impossible, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the space and involving the spectator at all times, who can let their imagination run wild to complete the meaning of the work.
TRANSLUCENS is a holographic projection on a water curtain accompanied by a stereo sound design. It is the work of the Finnish artist Niko Tiainen, who starts from the very word that gives the project its title, translucens, a Latin term that means translucent, to create a proposal that converses with the mathematical theory of the structures that have light and concrete biological forms through the combination of different visuals creating a Kuleshov effect: the audience builds the real script in their minds. This technique creates a story that resembles the structures of dreams in REM phase, which are cinematic and in color.
