  • Caroll Thompson, best known as the 'Queen of Lovers Rock' joins Tim and her husband Dotun today to discuss the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Brazil, as well as the music and culture from that day.
Taking place on the 12th of July 1998, Brazil, who had won the World Cup just 4 years prior, played against France, the host and Final newbies. The match was concluded with a 3-0 French victory which drove them to claim the World Cup for the first time, a feat celebrated nation-wide and made all the more significant having been achieved 2 days before Bastille Day.
Together they speculate about Ronaldo's "convulsive fit" on the eve of the match which may have been instead a sleepwalking episode, Caroll's touring history with Boy George and the cultural conflict in France and the UK that still exists today.
They discuss Laurence Fox's controversial comments amid Black Lives Matter - do you think celebrities have a responsibility when it comes to addressing social and political movements?
Tim is a football journalist and is recognised at the South American football expert in the English speaking world and has developed a cult following for his role on BBC 5Live's World Football Phone-in hosted by Dotun. Dotun is a former music journalist turned broadcaster with an impressive sport, musical and cultural awareness. It helps that the duo are good friends, which makes for light-hearted and thoughtful conversation you want to chime into. Brought to you wrapped up in ribbon in The Brazilian Shirt Name Podcast.
