The only difference between a grimoire and a book of shadows is the term “book of shadows” is newer. That’s literally it. Everything else is preference. No one makes it the same way
That was the video I needed today. This morning I realized that I don't have many pages left in my book of shadows and it made me kinda nostalgic. I started it last March and I wrote almost every day during this crazy year. Most of my dreams, all my ups and downs and my path so far are in this book and it is so much more than just a collection of information. I moved twice last year, lived for solid four months in my boyfriends apartment and had to come to terms with a bunch of emotional stuff and every bit and piece found its way into this notebook.
I think I’m going to make my first book of shadows in a physical copy and then I think I’ll eventually transition into a digital one on my iPad. I love your tips!
You can do that, but it would be a grimior or someone elses path into magiac, a book of shadows it's like your personal path to witchcraft, like a witch journal, I bave nothing agents you doing that, it's your path not mine, chest keep that in mind.
Ah! I envy the discipline of a Book of Shadows! As an entirely intuitive practitioner I have such imposter syndrome about writing things down which then leaves no physical evidence of my work and furthers the imposter syndrome 😅
If for no other reason, consider writing things down so you know what worked for you, herbs you may be allergic to, herbs you like, your favorite rocks, incense brands/scents you don't like and ones you favor, that kind of stuff. Practical craft related things without actually writing down spells if you're not comfortable writing those down.
I dont have any books of shadows, but I want to make one, and I've always had a kind if obsession with note books and journals, I found one that was especially beautiful it has butterflies and an olive green base on it, and I got it maybe 2-3 years ago, I have never used it because it was too beautiful for anything I could have done with it and I still have it to this day sitting in its designated spot on my shelf with my other journals, but I've got another one I intend to use for my BOS, because I feel it would help me so much since I'm just starting my craft, I've never even done a spell or meditated lol
My old one got destroyed but I'm making a starter kinda grimore om Google slide and then I have a journal that I use as a diary and write my tarot readings
I started with just keeping a grimoire in a binder and have relatively recently started a BoS for basically my rough notes. My shadow work journaling tends to go into my journal and i don't do much spell work at all so it's been a good way to compile things into one place before i work up larger grimoire pages.
Tip for when you're afraid to start writing in your beautiful notebook- get an erasable pen! I use a private discord server for random notes and active study/ planning, and I was gifted a beautiful leather bound notebook that will be for deity spreads, devotional and eventually ritual scripts, and reference pages for study that I've 'completed', as well as anything particularly meaningful or effective of course. Basically, short term versus long term.
i have two books of shadows - i have a pinterest board with lots of sections which is useful for quick info and i have a notebook and this is more personal and it includes drawings and more friendly its also more private as it contains my shadow work and my personal spells etc. i really recomemend these bc you can save stuff to your pinterest board to write down in your notebook for later :))
My book of shadows is such a creative outlet, I have trouble pulling myself away from it. I also have witchy food recipes. Teas, sketching, collages and more in mine..I also will find info in books and take notes in my bos and eliminate the book so I have one major source of info.
First, I want to thank you for sharing so freely about your personal practice and journey, it's both interesting and helpful to all of us, myself in particular. There is one thing I want to mention about digital books generally, whether a book of shadows or a novel: it's not very clear that they are actually more environmentally friendly than a paper book. Though there is a definite environmental toll to producing paper and binding books, once that is done, no further environmental cost accrues. Also, if you get FSA certified renewable paper the damage can be mitigated a bit. Digital books by contrast require power every time you read them, and continue to pollute the environment continuously over the course of their lifetime. The storage media contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals that are highly polluting if not disposed of properly, and the process of producing the computers and media extracts a much higher environmental cost than paper. Also, digital media has a fairly short lifespan, whereas paper can last hundreds, potentially even thousands of years. All of this is not in any way to say you (or anyone else) shouldn't have a digital book of shadows; you definitely should if it suits you! Just that of the various benefits digital media does provide, it's doubtful there is any actual environmental advantage. Thanks again for everything you've shared with this community and all the great work and energy you put into this channel. Be well!
I have a few BoS, all physical. I have one for my tarot journey bc I just started out, and I have one for different card readings I do, pick a cards I watch, Spells and everything else, that one is pretty chaotic but I love it haha Thank you for showing yours! I love seeing other people's Grimoires and Books of shadows, I really like those kinds if videos. ^~^
I have so many different notebooks. I read in a book when i first started to have a scribble/draft book where you can be as messy as you want and then you can write the final draft into the 'pretty' one.
I just have one notebook for EVERYTHING. Witchery, tracking my food/water intake, appointments, craft projects (am stitch witch), poetry, drawings etc. it’s just easier on my brain that way
Great video. I am actually kind of going in the opposite direction. Being a 90s witch I was all about going digital and well I have learned the hard way digital is temporary. I have a bunch of old floppy disks that I can't even find a drive to load them assuming they are not corrupted. And even online services if you look at the number of online services from Google that are long dead is almost as long as the list of current services offered. I have hard drives that will not physically connect to any modern computer and alot of lost data. So my take is to keep a digital copy on hand of stuff you use on the daily but hard copy is what lasts. Heck I even bought a manual typewriter to type up stuff to glue into my BOS. I also have mine in a leather sleeve so I have bits and bobs stuffed in the pockets.
So glad I started going back through your older videos. I love this video. I have a lot of my material digitally and even have it shared across all of my devices through Dropbox. My only issues with this, is what feels like a loss of personality that you just can't replicate digitally. There is nothing like pen and paper to add personal magic to your tools. I am also 50 years old now and have been practicing off and on since I was 10, and in this stage of my life I really want something that I can hand down to my daughter. I really want her to have a good quality book, and that's just not something a digital download can do for me.
My grimoire is only spells, poems, etc. but my book of shadows is a record of shadow work I’ve done on myself (very private), the what, why, how, including any sigils, drawings, recipes. If I get good results, the recipes go into the grimoire for sharing, revision, or re-use.
another good way to have a physical book of shadows and the way that i prefer is to use a three ring binder! it's easier to add and take away information that way 💓

Hi 👋🏻 so I am very very new to all of this. This has helped me so much. I want to start seriously learning witchcraft and I have absolutely no idea where to start. Any pointers would be so so appreciated. ❤️
A new video! Thank you so much. I just got my first tarot deck today, so I’m excited to start my journey. Do you have any tips on what I should do to start building my relationship with this deck?
while i’m watching this video all the things you listed off you researched im writing and looking up i messed up a lot of a page so i ripped it out and now i’m over here re righting everything from my old book because i ripped almost every page 😭
Sorry this is incorrect. The Book of Shadows is a specific grimoire (like the Key of Solomon, Red Dragon, Petit Albert, Black Pullet) that is only accessible to Gardnerian and Alexandrian initiates, maybe a few other British Trads. It is not just any occult journal. The Book of Shadows is hand-copied from initiate to initiate. The idea of any magical journal being called a Book of Shadows became popular with Charmed. I do enjoy your other videos though!
I like the idea of making a digital BOS that I can edit. But I definitely will make a physical one that is majority informational that I can make look nice and personalize (I scrapbook/bullet journal) and have quick access to. Thank you so much for your videos. They are so helpful for me as a beginner who is very overwhelmed and has so idea where to start.
I like to think of mine an informative book that I've gathered from various sources. No spells cuz I'm not a witch/Wiccan, but goddess info I follow and maybe altar information
Microsoft word is a good idea. I’m probably going to be using Google Sites because I can organize it with different tabs and create a theme to it. Thanks for the inspiration!
wow, your the only one I've seen that actually on youtube that actually explains/describes what a bos is, I've kept one for about 22 years but with many many books lol....Now im starting on a newer one and looking online to see what is being sold and just recently I've searched just to see what was out there cause i want to get a good book to put all my good stuff from all my years of my practice into a new one and want one with good intentions be put forth into one that's made to last open and shut without tearing apart or breaking down so easily, and i also wanted to see what all these new witches were referring to a bos was. I think a lot of the true tradition has been lost and now it's like everyone is jumping in not evening knowing what the craft actually is, how long it takes to learn, research, and what a true witch means.. But you got it, you got the best definition to what a bos is, how to use, what to put in it...Great witching, you will always change and your craft will evolve and change for the better, you will see in your past what you have learned and what didn't work, what did....bb this was great though.
I have my BoS in a binder 🤔 well two but I’m going to upgrade to a bigger folder 😅 I have a planner for the year and a few notebooks...I write a lot sometimes random stuff 🤣 BoS I see as a personal thing with feelings and thoughts as well as spells. And I see a Grimoire as more of a shared book, like it has spells and correspondences but you don’t mind sharing 🤷🏼♀️ less personal. My BoS I have a blessing and a page or two on my own ethics as a witch.
I love the idea of a digital BOS i’ve been transferring mine into google docs but I cant part with the traditional notebook😅 i have two types of bos a big ass one filled with everything I’ve learned and different parts if my craft that i may no longer resinate with but find joy in looking back at its become more of a grimoire at this point and a small notebook for everyday things i keep with me just very basic work and information about my craft that never changes :p i also keep a separate book/ journal for shadow work tarot spreads manifestation and more emotion related stuff
Every time I try to make a book of shadows it ends up being a grimoire or just a spellbook, I forget to write my own experience and focus only on the spells and rituals. So I just got another book and gonna try to do this again.
When I was journaling about average daily events I would shred everything. Since journaling in what might be the beginning of a Shadow Book I keep everything. The first thought I have that comes in my head is alwsys the right one. And the darker the thought the more on point it is. I wonder if I am getting the nack of this? I could be interested in plants used for medicinal purposes which is how medicine began.
I'm a beginner witch and I have just set up my altar (not going to use it for spells or spiritual work yet) and I wanted to start my book of shadows. But then, I learned about a grimoire. Could I combine both of the meanings for those books into one book?
yes you can, you can really do anything u want to or feel comfortable with, there's no specific guide to HAVE to follow, i'm a beginner too and i haven't fully started mine yet
i put allot of things in my BOS like prayers and information, because its allot easier, because im not very organised and i would probably misplace/loose diffrent ones
That's "BS", I believe. You may also have heard the phrase POS which is "piece of s***". But you can call you book whatever you want: Book of Magic, Black Book, Grimoire, Commonplace Book, magical journal, whatever. I gave mine the fancy name of "Book of Dreams and Secrets" or BoDaS for short.
Do you use your digital book of shadows during a ritual or will you write it down? For me I use my book for guidance during rituals/spell work but I’m afraid to mix technology into it.
I love working digitally but for me a digital book of shadows would not be an option, bc I feel so much more connected to a book qnd also I don't feel comfortable using my computer while doing spells or rituals bc it's my work ane witchcraft is so disconnexted to work or things i have to do. So I keep it analog for now

Book of Shadows. Grimoire. It's all the same concept. A book with your personalized spellwork/thoughts/ideas.
Please do a video about tips for witches in the Broom closet! +~ Love you Frankie ~+

I love your glasses!
Nice earrings 🤩
thanks for the help!
i put allot of things in my BOS like prayers and information, because its allot easier, because im not very organised and i would probably misplace/loose diffrent ones
Thank you angel
THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO IT HELPS A LOT!!! AND U LOOK AMAZING! but is there like a mic that u use cause the sound is like kinda ”loud”?
I'm using a mic :/ I'll try to reconfigure it a bit
I first thought for some reason that BoS means Bullshit ;-; cuz I heard people saying That's a BoS right there XD
But aye cool books
That's "BS", I believe. You may also have heard the phrase POS which is "piece of s***". But you can call you book whatever you want: Book of Magic, Black Book, Grimoire, Commonplace Book, magical journal, whatever. I gave mine the fancy name of "Book of Dreams and Secrets" or BoDaS for short.
Do you use your digital book of shadows during a ritual or will you write it down? For me I use my book for guidance during rituals/spell work but I’m afraid to mix technology into it.
Thanks
*BOOK BOOK BOOK!!!!*
Just a question..... if I ever work for a deity ...
could I ask if I can film them or do I just film?
Or should I not at all?
Just curious
ask!! when working w a deity it's always important to ask permission for most of the things you do involving them!
@@babycourtney8345 thank you!
My book of shadows is awesome
Got here in 4 minutes hell yeah
I love working digitally but for me a digital book of shadows would not be an option, bc I feel so much more connected to a book qnd also I don't feel comfortable using my computer while doing spells or rituals bc it's my work ane witchcraft is so disconnexted to work or things i have to do. So I keep it analog for now
