1DLflyer I mountainbiked out to Crossbay bridge across from JFK in the early 2000’s. Delta A310’s and short l-1011’s drifted in from the Atlantic in one long unending Conga line in the afternoon hours. Loved it.
I only flew on an L-1011 twice as a kid (30 years ago) but it was an experience I will NEVER forget. The TriStar is the reason I love aviation to this day.

Hey! We're not all that old. Okay, I guess we are. Flew on one LHR-JFK in August 1988. It was a TWA flight crew and number operating a Gulf Air L-1011 as per their partnership at the time. It was great! I was 16 and one happy avgeek!

I really miss this plane. Since my dad worked for Delta here in Hawaii we flew between here and LA alot on this great bird. My last L-1011 flight was when I was 6 back in June of 2000. I wish Lockheed still made these planes!
@ie210 Thanks. The L-1011 was a treat to all passengers who enjoyed traveling by air. In those days, I had the chance to ride in first class. What a joy. I loved the LAX ATL SJU trips. From boarding, the special sound of the doors closing or opening. The firm click sound of the landing gear when it was locked before landing until the friendly wave goodbye by the flight attendants made the entire travel experience unforgettable.

Yep those great L1011s were so thrilling. From 1994-2000 I rode on the Atlanata-Honolulu route-to hear the whining engines right before landing at HNL was worth it all. I miss ya Tristar!

One of my favorite planes. I still remember my very last L1011 flight, which was on Cathay Pacific from Singapore to Hong Kong. My first L1011 flight was on Delta from Dallas to Atlanta. This was very shortly after Delta hired its first female pilot but she wasn't among the crew on my flight.

Thanks for your comment. The first time I took my parents on the L-1011 was from LAX to SJU. We flew in First class, and as we sttled down the flight attendants were hanging my parents coats and we were getting our drinks , my dad asked me when were we going to get on board. I replied that we were on board already, to which he replied "I thought we were in the First Class pre-boarding lounge"! That was a classic that shows how wonderful this airplane was.
Great aircraft, nothing before or after ever came close to matching it. Very first aircraft I ever went on flying from London Gatwick to Malta with British Airtours. So comfortable even in cattle class. Had a second chance to fly on one around 1998 flying from Dalaman to Gatwick with Caledonian. It had apparently been retired from British Airways and had then become a tanker for the RAF before being bought by Caledonian for service once again.
Remember these days? When you got food and drinks in coach! My first flight to Hawaii was on a Delta L1011, we flew BOS-SLC on a 757, swapped to the L1011 then we stayed right onboard the L1011(after stretching the legs in LAX) and headed out to HNL!

Actually, in the case of the L1011, what your watching is the Dynamic Lift Control in action, those spoilers are controlling the rate of descent, not the airspeed. The L1011 maintains a constant angle of attack on approach.
You got it! Many times you'll see that happen during descent, mostly when ATC request the pilot to drop the speed to set the many arrivals taking place.
Sure brings back memories of flying on such a great bird--and for me, it was my favorite airliner with the 727 being 2nd. I flew on this same type aircraft which was used by Delta the ATL to HNL flight that would depart around noon EST and arrive in HNL around 3-330pm local time...It would fly nonstop from ATL to HNL being a 9 1/2 hr flight from what I remember and Delta used the short dash 500 model which was the long range version a full sized and oldest original model with max passenger configuration from what I recall. I have been on both flights-the one from LAX being the larger one and the -500 model from ATL nonstop and enjoyed the long nonstop much better than the lengthy layover connecting flight using the LAX to HNL model... Regardless, I still loved these planes and remember when they actually flew into OGG--Maui which has a rather short runway of 7000ft for aircraft this size--the same length as the runways at LaGuardia in New York which for years handled wide body aircraft like the L1011 and DC10's often seen at the airport yet it's runways being only 7000ft in length...I really enjoyed the L1011 due to it's very roomy coach cabin seats and areas...it also had enough lavatories in the rear available--5, so that nobody had to wait long periods before being able to use...it was just a comfy aircraft to be on while taking very long trips compared to the aircraft available today--usually being wide body twin engine aircraft with too many passengers crammed inside! ...
The l011s: One arrived from SAN, the other from LAX. On the other side, One ready to depart for DFW and the other to ATL. The DC-8-61 was ready to go somewhere in the Marshall Islands.
@Coaljet Yes, it was!. As you can see in the video, I was sitting in the last bulkhead seat by the exit door behind the wing, and you can tell how quiet it is. It didn't even vibrate like it does in the 747s
@pentogram23 The air brakes (spoilers) are used to slow down faster. Many times Air Traffic Control will ask to slow down more to separate traffic who may be ahead being lined up for landing.

These were the best of the times big comfy seats 💺 and please put your cigarettes out when the light goes out. Felt like a king in those big old birds compared to now being crammed into flying greyhound buses now.

They look so rigid and tough when compared to flexible wings of the 87. Great capture.
They really don’t look that rigid when you compare them to the A300.
Much better than the MD11 or DC-10. Love that spoiler action on the descend. 1st aircraft to use the Rolls Royce RB211 engine. Now used by the 747

DJRosco82 Those times were the best. We had five L-1011s in HNL. SAN-HNL, LAX-HNL, SFO-HNL, DFW-HNL and ATL-HNL

When you look at Honolulu in the vid it looks so cool compared to today.
Most of these L1011's ended up with charter or cargo services but they were the best when around.

You cannot compare both aircraft as they were built in different times. Was the A320 flying when the L-1011 was built?. Obviously not.

I flew on 2 DL L's CVG-ZRH-CVG July 95.
I took that same route and plane, i believe it was in '95 though.
@msk7046 RAF mostly, Sheldon Adelson has 1 private Tristar (N388LS) and couple more maybe in comercial service.
why not just pull back on the throttle- I mean they're gonna land anyways?
