I'm overjoyed to hear the 90s whistle is back on her. She has her original voice again after so long. It's definitely gomna need some tuning as it sounds a bit too raspy, but nonetheless its great to see Claytor Changed his mind after all these years
I am so excited to have booked a ride on 611 for the final runs at Strasburg. She's my second favorite locomotive, and I have never seen her in person. I was doubtful that I would ever see her in operation, let alone ride her behind her. Circumstances made it impossible to go see her at Strasburg prior to her last weekend of operation. I was resigned to having to wait to see her in stagnant display in Roanoke after she returns and hope I could sniff the odors from recent operation. Now I will be able to do that and recall my one, albeit short, ride.
We tried twice to see 611 in 2021, but the first time they didn't run her for some reason, and the second time, she had mechanical issues. I'm sad that we couldn't ride behind her and see her in operation.
@@TrainsAreReallyCool I am hearing wishful thinking that 611 will operate somewhere in Virginia (near Staunton, maybe?) before the end of 2023. I think that is very optimistic. But I think the refurbish and FRA certification were for much more than to get two seasons in Strasburg and then retire her again. The talk was occurring at the Virginia Museum of Transportation after she arrived there. I have got my fingers crossed, including for you. I saw the interior of the cab and pulled her whistle cord on 6/3. I signalled for a move in reverse, as a wish, because reverse was in the direction of exiting the museum onto operating track.
@@JBS319 Thank you for posting the information, for all prospective riders and interested people. I just saw some rough information last night on the VMT web site. Can you tell all of us where to watch for dates and booking access?
I deffiinatly agree with you on that because the new whistle that was just put on her sounds more true to her currently because it resembles her original whistle she wore in the early 1990s!
This is an all-time classic. The scene of the two trains passing each other is precious. As for that whistle on the 611, it has the same pitch/timbre/volume, and even echo, of whisltes heard on nearly all N&W Y6a and Y6b power in numerous videos shot in the 1940s and early 1950s of mostly coal being hauled through the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. These are easily found on UA-cam. Thanks for giving great joy to numerous steamer rail fans with this production.
Since she’s headed back to the museum, does this mean she will cease operating again or are there future plans to keep her alive?? Sure would love to see 1218 return to steam!!
Boiler ticket doesn't expire until 2030, and she just got a major overhaul done last year. Nothing has been announced one way or another: it's far too soon to speculate anything.
Update: 611 will be operating on five weekends this fall on mainline excursions out of Staunton, VA on the Buckingham Branch. Purists may find it sacrilege that an N&W locomotive will be operating excursions on the C&O, but it's certainly better than no operations
Classic Norfolk and Western #611. It's on its final runs at Strasburg before heading back home to Virginia for the VMT. The #611 will return to Strasburg Railroad.
Thanks for this great video. I was surprised to see the 611 just push through that switch after the meet. I was expecting to see a crew member throw the switch. While it is obviously possible, I would think it would not be all that good for the track.
Not for the foreseeable future. She will be operating fall excursions on the Virginia Scenic Railway, part of the Buckingham Branch Railroad, former C&O main line trackage.
@@brianfalzon6739 I have no idea if shes gonna go back to the NCTM or not, but i hope she gets fitted with PTC so she can run on the mainline again because the locomotive she needs to stretch her legs and honestly im kinda tired of her going to NCTM or Roanoke or to Strasburg its been the same 3 locations within the past 5 years, she needs to go to different places and explore new territory!

Her (new?) whistle sounds amazing
Agreed, she sounds fantastic
I hope they let the engine keep the whistle because it sounds way better than the horrid low pitch one they got on it
Yes it's a new whistle and it is from sister 609 from what i know but sounds very similar to the one she wore in the early 90s!
Good video, like !
Rode 611 around 35 years ago from Birmingham to Chattanooga (Choo Choo) and back when son was a kid. He still remembers.
Well done!
This is AMAZING! Love seeing the 611 🚂
what are the operation times? Aso great video!!
Good luck to 611 in Virginia 🚂 all aboard
Any idea when 611 will be arirving back at the museum in Virginia?
I do hope 611 will pay another visit to the Strasburg Railroad again someday.
When is it expected to leave for Virginia
Sometime after Memorial Day, but no date has been announced.

The switches at Groff's are spring switches, as are the switches at the run-around at Strasburg and Paradise.

What's next for 611 after she goes back to VA from PA?
Unknown at this point, but I'm sure they'll announce the next appearances soon enough.
