  • Our trip to the dyno was fairly successful. The car is healthy and we put up some fairly impressive numbers. Problem is the numbers were nowhere near impressive enough to take down the mighty Honda Civic Type R. How do you fix that? By adding more power, in this case in the form of Elevate's 3" turbo back exhaust! Here's our full install and product overview.

      After the exhaust, fmic and tune... get an lsd.
      Dont bother with a cai (stock makes more power anyway, less heat soak)
      Get coilovers sooner rather than later. Makes an amazing difference over the stock setup.

  • @EtcEtcReviews
    @EtcEtcReviews 5 років тому +1

    if you guys are really going for power, why not a catless dp to provide the best flow? I also have elevate’s exhaust for my v50 as well (straight pipe is too obnoxious for me) but I went with a different supplier for the downpipe because I didn’t want a cat. I could see how backpressure and flow rate would be a problem if you weren’t already planning on tuning it, but since you are wouldn’t it make most sense to not restrict the downpipe to help turbo spool? Elevate even offers a tune that takes catless downpipe into consideration if you’re dead set on elevate products

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 років тому +1

      All fair points. Personally I want to keep the car legal. Plus we have a lot of power mods planned so the few hp were losing with the cat were going to more than make up for down the road.

      as long as you're not in california, which prohibits ANY modifications to the downpipe-regardless of what Elevate may claim (I lived there for 18 years so I'm quite familiar w/ modification laws) because starting in 2019 they will have strict visual inspection laws and prohibit any alteration to a cars emissions system, you could just as easily swap the stock downpipe in by the time emissions comes around like I did here in Colorado a couple weeks ago? I guess since you chopped it up that may be out of the question now, but I was able to pull mine out by just blasting and unscrewing the bolts (maybe because I have awd and fitment could be different?) I'm not trying to be a pessimist, I'm a big supporter of this project and elevate's products; just curious about your guys' logic behind it if your goal is more power!

    • @ImJustMe555
      @ImJustMe555 5 років тому +1

      A few years back I saw tests on back to back dynos of a stock ceramic cat Vs a high flow metal cat vs no cat and the power difference was minimal. Factory cat to high flow was around 4 WHP gain and high flow cat to no cat was 1 WHP gain IIRC. So based on the test that I saw from that test comparison is the only thing you really gain from no cat is a cost savings of the cat.

    i'm js but you shouldn't just slap an exhaust on and tune it...in order for it to be a civic type R slaying c30 you should do more performance parts first to gain power and then do the tune Last. If plan to add more performance parts after the tune the tune would just be a waste because its not incorporating the new parts and a retune would be necessary to gain more power. If you planned to not go any further hp/tq wise then idk how it will kill the type R

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 років тому

      You have to tune for each part you slap on, especially before the MAF and anything that would increase power. This is also a daily so it’s not going to sit idle while waiting on parts. No one should just put parts on that would jeopardize the engine. Multiple tunes are necessary if we, or anyone, are doing a build in stages, which we are.

    • @T5_T-Rell
      @T5_T-Rell 5 років тому

      @@ShiftingLanes the only parts that would jeopardize the engine that you put on without tuning for immediately are big hitters like bigger injectors, bigger turbos, internal engine parts, etc but i understand your route and wanting to play it safe nothing wrong with that, good luck with the build also I don;t remember correctly what year they fixed it but beware axles tend to be a problem for the early P1 volvos.

    I have a question, my knowledge of turbo cars a very limited , so he goes. Why are turbos mounted so close to the exhaust manifold? I would have thought if the were placed a bit further away,? it would give time for the air to cool a little, increasing the pressure and make the turbo spin faster.

    • @zfuru
      @zfuru 5 років тому +1

      Colder exhaust gas equals lower pressure.

    • @dudeshark2471
      @dudeshark2471 5 років тому

      Because there's less pressure further down the stream. Having the turbo right close allows for these smaller engine cars to spool more quickly. You do see rear mounted turbos in some race type applications but it's generally when it's paired to a car with a big engine that has exhaust pressure for days and helps to save space in the engine bay itself.

    Are sure that the aftermarket exhaust has the same back pressure as the original?
    Otherwise the stock engine mapping will be off and that may lead to a loss of power or torque and efficiency, as the car is optimized for that exact back pressure.
    In a worst case scenario changing the exhaust back pressure may lead to the engine knocking.

      He's got a cat, he's fine. Catless cars are recommended to be tuned, but it isn't really a requirement. The MAF and BPS will account for any change in turbo spool, catted or catless. The car just can't do it quite as good as a dedicated tune. It'll run great!

      Och detta med ett visst tryck.
      And the pressure is important as it is a direct result of how much fuel the engine is burning and the resistance of the exhaust system.
      A "after market" exhaust can be great.
      But it may have some interesting and some times unwanted effects, like the ones I mentioned above.
