TechMetalRules So glad you liked the lesson. Yeah, learning from other instruments is not only fun but it can really open up your musical thinking (especially when in a rut).
I started guitar not that long ago and I have played sax for like three years so this is something I've done without realizing it it does help you improve I remember I couldn't play a thing until I tried sax stuff on the guitar, I loved the video thanks for covering this. :D
Marcelo M. Hey Marcelo ... Thanks for the kind words. Yeah ... you're coming from a better place then most. Having that Sax understanding will easily put you ahead of the game when it comes to guitar improv!
Huw Roberts Thanks Hew ... Yeah, we've been talking about doing Michael Brecker Lessons for a while. Part two will be posted tomorrow ... it's a cool Lick. And the really BIG Michael Brecker should be posted in a few months! Brecker Rules!
Hey Spooky ... Glad you enjoyed this lesson! We are about to start up our youTube lessons/videos here again in a few weeks ... and we have a bunch more sax licks we're gonna be diving into! Hope you stick around!
Happy holidays buddy!!!i just dropped by to thank you for being such a cool teacher....i love listening to you break down really interesting musical ideas...i especially love how you break down Holdsworth ideas and how you talk about a wind instrument vibe applied to guitar...being a huge Holdsworth fan i always used to tell my musician friends that Alan is going for horn phrases and they never really agreed with me...treating guitar like a horn or a sax it's where it's at...thanks for breaking down Mr Brecker for us
Hey Robert ... Happy belated Holidays to you as well! Thank you so much for your kinds words! It's always great to hear what we do connects with others. And we've got more Holdsworth stuff on the way ... so stick around for that. And totally agree with your "treating the guitar like a wind instrument is where it's at"! Wind instruments are just so expressive! Thanks again for the comment and for all the support!
I've been doing this since the 80s first copying David Sanborn and then the list grew to multple horn players, not just sax. afterall--there melodies. and it's just a great way to train your ear.
Great lesson! Although, where do I start with learning the kind of fast, chromatic line that appears at the beginning of the video? That's the one I was looking forward to the most, since I've been working a lot on my legato chops lately, and I want my chromatic lines to sound like that.
CJ Araneta Glad you liked the Lesson CJ. As for the fast chromatic lines ... There are several ways to go about it.First is to transcribe the lines you hear and like and then just work on them slowly with a metronome. And analyze what's happening.Or you could learn some chromatic theory and get a solid understanding of some of the many chromatic concepts and motifs. And then start exploring with those ideas. One thing to keep in mind is … a lot of the Saxophone phrases incorporate 4th intervals in their fast lines. Which can be challenging on guitar. The was the Sax is set up allows for these intervals to be played relatively quickly and easily. On guitar it's a lot more difficult to play 4th intervals quickly … it's just the way the instrument is set up.Hope that helps … feel free to contact me if you are interested in some Skype Lessons. We could go over a lot of this stuff … including some of Michael Brecker's fast, chromatic lines.
+Yismah Segol more to come indeed! We have a few more Michael Brecker lessons ready to go ... it's just a matter of finding the time to get them done! Hope you stick around!
Damn... those sounds took me back to the 80s, cruising the city streets at night, in my patrol car with my partner, wandering in the moonlight searching for mystery or a crime, the night I lost him. And that says a lot since I was born in the 90s.
I like this a lot. saxophone is my favorite influence on guitar..love jazz. maybe tell the viewer what key you're in so you dont have to mention every fret. if they know thr keys and modes then they'll know the notes without naming every fret change.
John Love Hey John ... It's a Suhr guitar. Yeah ... tons of guys are using them. They're just really comfortable playing instruments that sound really good.
This guy has extremely good phrasing. I think his Transcriptions of horn players is the main reason why. Great player indeed.
This is an incredible idea for a lesson video! I LOVE trying to learn non-guitar melodies on guitar. Thanks!

Michael Brecker actually said once that he started to listen to how guitarists bent strings as another part of his sound!
Awesome!
