Joali definitely has more spacious and beautiful villas, with the best Japanese cuisine I've had in the Maldives, and I found it to be better value for both accommodation and for scuba diving and activities. The kids' club is perfect for younger kids and also babies, since it has cribs. Velaa has the better beach and has more choices, especially land based activities (golf, basketball, climbing wall, volleyball, squash, ping pong, pool tables, in addition to tennis), not to mention all the water sports, although at a fairly steep price. If cost is no object and all the activity choices are important, I'd recommend Velaa, but for those who are more price sensitive or for whom the villa itself is very important, I'd recommend Joali or Cheval Blanc Randheli.
We didn't have any problems while there during our March stay, and we have a son who is very often bitten by mosquitoes and other bugs if there are any. As with other places in the Maldives, I do recommend going during the typically dry months of December-April, as rain is less frequent, which also usually means a reduced risk of mosquitoes.
which out of the Velaa or Chev and Joali is situated on a prettier atoll with nicer water and beaches?

Curious about mosquitoes, flies and other "biting" insects - is that a problem? It's a stunning location to be sure.
