This video just saved me big time. I had the caliper off and managed to activate the parking brake, essentially locking the pads in the caliper. I spent a half hour googling how to make it release before finding this. Worked a treat! Thanks!
How Did you manage to engage the parking brake while you were working on it? How come you or the gentleman in the video didn’t just disengage the parking brake by clicking the button in the car?
@@aguiremedia the parking brake does not fully disengage to allow you to compress the caliper. I hit the parking brake button, thinking that would deactivate it and let me compress the piston. It did the opposite and clamped the pads together. So I had to use this truck to get the parking brake to unwind, so I could compress the piston.
@@Chad_H gotcha! Thanks so much! I just bought a used xc60 18’ and I think i need to change the brakes as it travels pretty far to push the brakes or start the car. What did the cost run ya? Where did ya get the pads? Thanks!
@@aguiremedia I went a little extreme on pads and got EBC yellow stuff. Ran about $275 for pads at the time. I also switched to Dynamic Friction drilled and slotted rotor - it's been a great combo for stopping power. We'll have to see how long they last.
@@Chad_H Nice! How long did the last pads last ya? Ive read these cars wear pads quickly but also that may be the dealerships trying to sell people pads before they really need them? I just sold a 2017 Honda HRV with 110,000 miles on it with the original pads. The dealership at first wanted me to change them at about 40,000 miles but they still had life in them and after that they never asked me again, but like I said when I sold the car the pads still had life in them, no squeaks no squeals, great stopping power, barely push the break peddle and the car would break well 🤷♂️
I tried the 9v battery method but the (new) battery didn't seem to have enough strength in it to complete the last few turns of the motor and so wasn't able to fit the caliper. I then decided to use an old 12v car battery charger connected to the probe wires off a digital voltmeter. The probes fitted nicely into the motor terminal housing with a controlled contact on the motor terminals. That worked a treat winding the motor back all the way and was then able to fit the calipers without any jamming.

Hey Kyle. Thanks for showing how to do this. But i have a question. Did the emergency brake motor automatically go back to the starting point after completing the brake job?
I’m going to try this out tomorrow. Today changed one side had to drill out one of the little bolts holding the motor to the caliper they were rusted on my 2011 XC 70 I’m praying that it does 😎
Please note: when you connect the 9V you need to connect the positive wire to the #2 connector and the negative to the #1 connector. The connectors are inside the yellow wire clip. If you do it opposite then you will compress the caliper. I did this accidentally and almost could not get my caliper compressor to fit.
There is another way to do this job: you can open the motor case and rewind the electronic parking brake manually using a torx tool. Anyway thank you very much for your great videos.
Not every angel resides in heaven. I am surprised how Volvos that are so packed with technology is still as simple to work on like an old Nissan. I have been watching videos over and over and I will buy the rotors as well now. I can't believe Volvo wants 599 per axle just to change pads alone
@@Goodneighbor-f9m robbery. My 9V battery was not working so I had to do it the old fashion way by taking off the EPB and turning the piston back before using a C Clamp to push it into position
Just for info. You don't need to do the battery trick anymore. If your Volvo car system is up to date there is a menu setting to keep the EPB disengaged. go to car settings, Brakes and check the ' do not auto EPB' box and your good to go.
Great video! Let me ask: after completing the brakes did you re-engage the emergency parking brake using the battery or does it do it on its own once the car starts? Thanks
Just be careful with the wires. I did this on an S60 some time ago and managed to break a wire (I assume), I imagine by twisting it awkwardly. Motor still worked, but it wouldn't talk to the car so pinged up a handbrake error on the dash.
You can also remove the electric engine on the break and rotate the shaft clockwise. It takes only removing two screws. If you are a professional mechanic is quicker than using the battery.
But the gasket also is compromised that way too. That's how I first saw how to do it but this way no gasket removal and then just put the battery in a smoke detector when you're done 😂
Hello I have a 2017 F-Pace 35t AWD Premium. What's the best way to release that EPB in order to replace the rear brakes. Do you have recommendations about the oil/filter that I should use and at what interval. I recently got this vehicle and as a female owner, I want to maintain it as much as possible myself, as I learn this particular vehicle. Any help or suggestions would be Appreciated. Thank you.
I watched this to see the 9v trick. However the camera angle, lighting and description didn't show me where to connect the battery.
This was by far the easiest trick to follow. No scanner and no jumper pack needed. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. The 9 V battery trick worked like a charm. I would not have been able to have figured that out on my own. Much appreciated!
where did you connect two strings from 9V battery?

Great video, thanks for sharing the 9v tip.
Do u have to reverse to actuator motor after putting the new brakes on
Hi..change my rear breaks and rotor..park and breaks lights are blinking and won’t start.

Can you speak more to this? Do you mean open the brake box?
Do these newer Volvos use vida software?

My Volvo dealer charges $800/ axle. Won't put new pads on without new rotors. I said "No thanks", doing it myself

Could you please elaborate? I can't find this in the menu for our 2021 XC40 P8 with the latest software (3.2.8).
