  • Oh boy! Another big anniversary today. Moving Pictures was released on this date in 1981 which makes it 36 years old. The NYC radio station, 102.7 WNEW FM, played the album in it’s entirety before it was released. I had it going on our little Panasonic stereo and every portable radio we had in the apartment…sort of a poor man’s surround sound. I remember it like it was yesterday. Amazing.
    Well, here’s my re-do of the closing track off that album, Vital Signs. I’m playing the Mid-70’s Guild B-301 with the Babicz 3 Point Replacement Bridge and the Near-Zero Mod Thump-Rest. I’m a big fan of Tim’s stuff at Zero-Mod.
    www.zero-mod.co...
    And again, if you can possibly manage the time, please check out my friend, Joe Cruz’s “Tribute to Neil Peart and Rush”. I think he did a great job.
    • A Tribute to Neil Pear...
    Fun fact - a virtual friend of mine actually made a few “best of” clips of me, from my videos. He even made me a cool new logo/avatar to go with it. Perhaps I’ll post one in the near future, but in the meantime, please enjoy Joe's.

    Absolutely fantastic bass riff, one of Rush's hidden gems, overshadowed by the big hits on that album. Great playing, as usual. I feel like a broke record writing that on your channel all the time but it's true.

    Another gem, Troy. The Guild really sounds great on this. I was thinking Geddy used a flanger and a bit of chorus on the solo section. I put a Babcicz bridge on my other, non-4001 bass and it made a huge difference. Thanks for this one, a great song.

    Wow. That Guild fits right in with the tonality of the entire Moving Pictures album. Vital Signs was always a favorite of mine off that record and I always been intrigued with how fluid and bouncy Geddy's Jazz bass sounded on that particular song when compared to the other songs on Moving Pictures where the Jazz bass was used.

    Hi Troy. Because of the frequency of your posts, one could easily get the impression that you don't spend much time rehearsing a particular number, and yet you seem to absolutely nail them each time. This time with chords too. WOW, impressive stuff.
    I reiterate, I wish you lived in England and wanted to be in a band. Top man.

      Actually, I spend a lot longer than I care to admit with each song before I'll even consider sitting down in front of the camera. I try to get each song to the point where I no longer need to think about playing it...to a point where my fingers just move on their own. And even when I do get the song to that point, it all goes out the window when I hit "record". At that point, I try to stay focused on where I am in the song, not where I was or where I am going to be. If I focus on either of those things I'm much more likely to make a mistake.
      Thanks a lot.

    You did a fantastic job on this track Troy! This was actually the second song I ever taught myself on bass, even though it was the spring of 1992 and grunge was all the rage. BTW, the first song I taught myself was "New World Man." Then the third song was "Knock Me Down" by RHCP. I wasn't totally obliviuos to the alternative music washing over my high school, quite the opposite. But great is great, and Rush was my favorite band at that time.
    Troy, what was/were the first song/songs you taught yourself on bass? Who were you listening to that inspired you to pick up the bass? For me it was Geddy and Flea, with many more virtuosos to become influences after I picked up the bass.
    To buy my first and only bass guitar that spring in 1992 I used a music department (monetary) award given to me, a tuba player, by my high school band director. Not on private lessons, not on fees for a Drum & Bugle Corps group; I used my award on a BASS! Well, even though I could read bass clef sheet music I never took the time to learn how to sight read and play sheet music with my bass. Thus, I didn't use the bass in our jazz band as my band director had hoped; he was PISSED. He grew to resent the purchase I made with my award, and me.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 років тому +2

      Thanks. This sounds pretty advanced for a second song, it's a bit of a finger twister.
      The very first think I heard and then played on the bass was the theme from a movie called "Assault on Precinct 13". It was an early John Carpenter movie that ran on nearly constant rotation on the earliest version of cable tv. It played throughout the movie and I'd sit and wait for it to come on in order to play along with it. It was worse than learning something from an 8 track...if you know that that is. After that, it had to be some Kiss stuff but I really don't remember. I recall being frustrated because some of their stuff was tuned down a half-step and I did not know that such a thing was even possible back then. I do remember the earliest Rush songs I learned though. I got my start on the "All the World's a Stage" album, starting with "In the Mood" and "What You're Doing" and then moving on to "Lakeside Park", "Fly by Night", "Bastille Day"...culmination with "2112".
      I started playing bass because I wanted to be Gene Simmons from Kiss. I'm not sure if I even knew what a "bass" was, I think I was more attracted to the horror imagery of his character, but he played the bass and so was I. From there I transitioned quickly to Black Sabbath (by that point I knew what a "bass" was and still enjoyed the horror imagery) and then to Rush.
      I played a bit of upright bass in the middle school orchestra but there were no rewards for me. I couldn't grasp the "reading" thing so I'd just listen to what the fellow next to me was playing and I'd mimic that. It was pretty elementary stuff anyway.
      I'm glad to hear you picked up the bass and, hopefully, continue to play. Thank for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 років тому +1

      Aw, there are a bunch of us now, but thank you very much for the kind words. I think I've covered around 130 out of 170 possible songs and I'm content with that. That 170 includes songs without bass (like Rivendell) and others, like Animate, that rely heavily on Geddy's patented "flamenco" technique that I wouldn't be able to do justice to. The few songs that I just don't care for are within that 170 as well. If another UA-camr reaches 100 songs, I might start digging around.

    Great cover as usual, but the first 2 notes of the main riff he combines. He doesnt play them completely separately like you do. Was just pointing that out. You can hear it on the album but can hear it better isolated ua-cam.com/video/TWBPgtB9m3E/v-deo.html

    • @trenken
      @trenken 6 років тому

      Also when you watch him play it live, he plays the first 2 notes of the riff with just his index finger, not 2 different fingers like you are here, so the first note is held with the underside of the knuckle, second note with the tip. Thats how he usually plays stuff like this.

    Great job as always Troy. I play this song as well, but my left hand is always in a different position compared to yours, it's funny how other people play the same song but in completely different ways
    What is the change from the sound with this Babicz brisge from another one like a BadAss Bass II like in the Geddy Lee Signature?

    • @veblenrules
      @veblenrules 7 років тому

      yes there is different fingering that makes it much easier to play the same riff. barring with the first finger etc.
      i have noticed he avoids the pinky at times then uses it. he still always sounds fantastic. but i would not adopt some of his fingering techniques.

      after watching Troy's cover of Tom Sawyer I realised I had been playing for years "the hard part" in a position that made it become a lot more difficult lol

      @TJH3113  7 років тому +1

      Thanks. As long as the notes are right, it shouldn't matter where on the neck you play a part as long as it's comfortable for you. Sometimes I do it for comfort and sometimes it's for sound. I don't know if the Babicz gives the bass a discernible difference in sound but I like the ability to really fine tune the individual string height as opposed to what I was able to do with the stock, 3 Point bridge.

      Yes, not using my pinky is a bad habit I developed as a young, self-taught player.

      Hmm, There are definitely differences in tone when you play the same note on a "different string". I've always played his parts exactly where he plays them, and it does make a difference. I'm sure he wrote them to be comfortable for "him", but to duplicate the tone of each note, it helps if you play it the same way he does. Still amazing pal, the overall tone is spot on!.

    Where or how can I hear some of your very own bass lines? So curious how you hear the bass and interpret it. Its great to see people play other people's stuff great, but also cool to hear who a great bass player like you writes

      I have a playlist titled, "Originals" where I play along with some originals I wrote and/or played on. I've recorded with a lot of people over the years but have always been bad at cataloging the material, except for my favorite original band, Crisis. I also have a SoundCloud page where all the Crisis material is available for free download - just search TJH3113 in SoundCloud.

    WOW another great job can't believe it's been 36 yrs since moving pictures release a lot of interesting bass lines textures and tones on this album in particular Geddy was really all over the kneck and fretboard sometimes I got the idea listening to this album that Geddy Alex and Neil were experimenting with sounds and tone "on the fly" while they were doing the song just incredible

    I've been searching and playing a bit with your rush covers as well as others. this one here is a good one to start with for me personally since it isn't as aggressive as some of the others. Slow bass lead which just feels natural. Free Will is another good one to start out with. Had been working on Digital Man (one of my favorites) but I'm going to have to get up to speed for that more advanced one. Currently on the back burner but I do re-visit it. :) You mentioned in one of your videos that your not really a teacher but this is indeed what a large number of bass players are looking for. I enjoy Monkey see Monkey do! haha Great job once again! Is there any particular reason that your not using a fixed left hand position for the verse? Just curious. :)

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  7 років тому +1

      Digital Man was the first video I posted because I find it to be one of the most difficult to play...I said, "If I can get this one, then it will be all down hill from here." I'm glad you find the videos helpful. I wish I could do more, like tabs or lessons, but that's a bit beyond me. Not sure what you mean by "fixed left hand" in the verse part. I play it this way because it's most comfortable for me and I feel I get the most separation of notes this way.
