Good first step, replace all belts/idler tires and give the machine a good cleaning. Finally, check mechanical alignment according to the service manual.

Thank You for posting. I have two SL-5400's to adjust. It had been 31 years since I did this adjustment.

I have a Sony SL-5200. Did a thorough cleaning and replaced all the belts and it loads, ejects, ff/ rew and plays perfectly but I def have the bad capacitors. Audio is fluttery and video rolls and/or has snow (you can still sorta see what's showing). Your video gave me the confidence to try to do the repair. Thx.

Solid work so far. Good luck!

That's right. Of course, it seems that the speed is slow or fast due to a defective tantalum capacitor. Adjustments were also required after replacement when recording.

Can the adjustments be made on the circuit board without changing the caps? Got the picture and sound flutter on a sony c6ub mk2

You’d be shooting in the dark. The caps are junk and need to be changed. Not familiar with the overseas models personally though.

Hello! I recently got a Betamax SL-5000 and what happens is: The tape will eject. So far, I have been able to get the tape to go in after a few tries, but it makes this loud, fast spinning sound, and then a click. If I push PLAY, the green light turns on but no video on the TV. If I push FAST FORWARD, the video appears on the TV, fast-forwarding the tape. Same thing with REWIND. When I called the only local VCR repair shop, the owner said they don't fix or work with Betamax. Do you think you could help me, please? Thank you so much!

When you say no video, are you watching this on a real CRT tv or a newer flat screen? I haven’t found one SL-5000 that worked without changing the capacitors and doing the adjustments in this video.
The loading problems are the belts and idler tires. They all need to be changed by now. If the machine can’t complete the threading cycle it gives up and ejects.

For the tv, I used a flat screen. I plugged the Betamax into the tv using AV cables. So yeah, no CRT. I've heard about the bad Sanyo capacitos, but I'm not sure where to get better capacitors online.

Wonderful video! Do you know where one could buy belt kits for these machines still? Any chance of a belt change video coming up for this model? Many thanks!

Gravyboy25 thank you! If you give Russell Industries in NY a call they should have most of what you need as part of their PRB line of belts. Just supply them with the model number. It’s getting harder to find idler tires but the belts are still out there.

@@Tapes1982 An update on my machine. I haven't replaced any belts or caps yet, but when I play back the tape, I can hear the audio speed is very inconsistent. It goes from normal to slow, to sped up randomly. As I watch the little window on the beta cassette, I can see the rotation speed is inconsistent too. Do you think this is related to the caps from this video? Or from the belts. As a side note, I see white horizontal lines during playback, but when I do betascan FF or Rev, I do see a good picture.

@@Tapes1982 I've just replaced three bands on a SL-C6 by welding my own from some belting I got from Amazon. "Akozon Polyurethane Round Belt PU Polyurethane Round Belt for Drive Transmission High-Performance Green Rough Surface (2mm*10m)" I cut the belting material to size then welded the ends together by holding them against both sides of the flat surface of the plastic-weding tip for my Weller heat gun, and then holding them together, as in -line as I can. Then I cut off the sticky-out bits to make the joint reasonably smooth. They grip really well and the joints seem pretty strong. I've also replaced belts of cine projectors using this stuff. UK Amazon link www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KQ2H1CM
I also shortened the spring underneath at the back to pull the idler more firmly onto the drive so I didn't have to manually poke it as Tapes1982 does in the video!
I also tried applying 'Platenclene' to the idler tyre but that wasn't really the problem (www.amazon.co.uk/AF-Platenclene-Cleaning-Pump-Spray/dp/B0012IKSHO)
Now the mechanics are working I'm trying to work out why there's no sound or picture!

I have one of these with multiple problems. It’s free to anyone who will pay the shipping from 40076 Kentucky. It was my first vcr and I’m sentimental about it but I need the space in my office. Hate to send it to the recycling center but that’s the next option. It’s about 39 lbs.

I recently picked up the same model, however, it doesn't power up except for the clock. Any suggestions?

    • @Tapes1982

Leonard Jericho Balang first off I’m terrible at troubleshooting over the internet, but I’d begin checking voltages leaving the power supply. That’s if you’re getting a clock AND no power indicator light. In my experience with this series, they aren’t known for common power supply problems. I really haven’t had to touch a supply yet in any great detail. You will need a schematic, which I may have if you need a photo of the circuit.

@@Tapes1982 I managed to power on the SL-5000, but the other problem is that the take up spool doesn't rotate when playing.

    • @Tapes1982
      @Tapes1982  3 роки тому

Leonard Jericho Balang time to check all the belts and idler tires. That’s another common problem once they age and begin to slip.
