@jayrohena5094 actually freddy started writing in the early 70s with the fabulous 5,hence the name fab5 freddy. One of his most memorable pieces is the Campbell soup car that he wasn't able to finish cause the train pulled out the lay up.
I can fully resentate with this. i myself come from amsterdam in the netherlands and here graffiti developed in a different way than from new york. Here people started writing political statements and the graffiti came out of the punk scene where poeple strated writing thier band names everywhere. Then quick from new york came here and changed into the more well known nyc graff. But i wachted a movie docu about how graffiti started in amsterdam with my dad and he told me that so many people lied. And i first thought "oh he is just saying stuff to i dont really know if to believe him" and then he showed me a bunch of facts that proved him right. Also i talked to a famous graffiti writer that also went to nyc at that time (mickey/mick la rock) and she also said that she saw that a lot of people lie in those kind of movies. Really wierd.
That's because many graffiti artists are devided on if they feel it counts as being the same as what we do. I'd say by cornbreads standards it does and therefore he certainly isn't the first. I think for this debate (of first graffiti) it certainly is relevant

This is true of hip hop in general as well, there are a lot of lies about its origin that have been cemented in mainstream media. I think because it started out as such a NY-centric culture it ignored many of the pioneers whose roots were southern US, and because of the controversial nature, how influential 5 Percenters were, etc

I see it discussed occasionally but it seems to me that Hispanic gangs in southern California were writing on walls as far back as the 1910s to 20s. I dont see it ever discussed how much modern graffiti owes to all the amazing rock poster art from the 60s. Artists like Rick Griffin were playing with lettewrs with shadows and 3-d and bright colors. I wouldnt be surprised if people say I dont know what Im talking about but just google Rick Griffin poster art and I think you will immediately see what I'm talkking about. Ces is the only really well known graff writer that I have seen pay tribute to these "roots".

Have you heard of BILLY 167? He's meant to be the guy who influenced SEEN the most. Some people even say SEEN bit his style. Also, a writer called IN was the king of throw-ups, back in the '70s. I think he quit in '76, after claiming to have painted 10,000 throw-ups on trains. As for IZ, he was never particularly skilled as an artist, but I always loved that whole-car that he painted with LADY PINK, that was in 'Subway Art'. You know, it was a tribute to all the dead Rock stars, and had all the grave stones on it? Graffiti actually killed him in the end, due to all the fumes he inhaled during his youth. Wasn't there meant to be a documentary being made about him, years ago?

Demer is not from the 70s. He was hardbody mid 80s street era with Trap, Edge, Enuf, Saint, SPone, JA, Trim, Dash, Veefer, and those guys. Some trains but made their real rep above ground. The original sin is Subway Art as it created a "canon". Sort of like the Bible. Let some in, but left even more out. That being said there are some pretty good books and docs out there that provide a fuller picture. Mascots and Mugs, for example. In general your point is correct. That while you will see pictures of In, Sonic, IZ, Quik, Heart, Jester/Dy 167, Cey (Adams) and Scop, Min, Cer, Gnome (Brooklyn style! And, why you do Anime inspired characters), OE 3, Phase 2, Ace 137, Abby, Chain 3, Kool 131, Slave, Poke, Tess and No, Mac 2, Revs and Cost, Shame 125, Billy 167, Demo, Saint as well as super crews like TC, RTW (baddest of them all), TDS, TMT and TPA (the Kings from Queens) they do not get talked about nearly enough. You don't get the sense of how big they were. Which is a shame.

How can you fact check people unless you check their rap sheet? It was a crime of vandalism for decades. I do remember names like Deez, Wiz, Flash, and Luckyy. Also cameras were expensive in the 70's. Everybody didn't have a camera and nobody was stupid enough to record themselves doing the crime. And lastly, if your art stayed up for longer than a month you were lucky. People constantly re-did tags.
You really can't and that's the issue. It's all he said she said pluss the limited photos that do exist and that's just about it. That's why I don't think this is an issue we can solve.
By that standard my rap sheet wouldn't count in your fact check, I never once copped a "vandalism" charge, some B&E, some trespass and 52 Property Damage charges. Then if you do accept the property damage charges as evidence and cross referenced it with my surviving photo's from the era you'd think i got busted for every piece i ever did. My house burned down in 2005 with my entire collection, so of course nobody is going to believe me except a very few close friends and my brother, that combined with the threat of jail as a "repeat offender" made me so depressed i didn't paint for 18 years. Now everyone thinks i am some old shhh talking toy who only just started painting, and apart from about 60 pics i had left at my brothers house from 1998 to 2002 i can't prove otherwise. Grim is right on, the real history is so distorted it's crazy, now i see guys from my day who only did the same 3 letter throwy about 20 times on trains on podcasts jabbering about how if you didn't hit those trains on that line you're nobody, worst part is he is sort of right. I had over 600 full blown 6 letter pieces on walls and freights that counted for nothing in the end. Still worth it.

Staff 161 is making good movies about it, and he was there at the beginning. You're not looking in the right places. Iz was great, but he wasn't first or second generation. There are also other people who are interviewing the older writers like Charmin 65 to document the history. The only thing that I believe that you talked about was that your friend was lying.
the way i see it you shouldnt learn the history if you arent doing it everyday or very frequently because youre spending that time learning about peoples experiences and not getting up you college boys gotta go out more if you think all that matters when some old head is probably lying or forgetting parts of the story

Here’s the real problem: graffiti is the tip of the spear for gentrification. Kids from the suburbs, otherwise quite well-off, prey on “blighted” neighborhoods. 20 years later they buy the building at a loss and flip it into commodified housing.

So number 1 I didn't decide anything, simply stating facts isn't be deciding anything. It's true people lie in these interviews, it's true some people don't get the credit they deserved despite playing massive roles like iz the wiz) , it's true people only got fame due to movies. None of that is false. Also, when I'm around legends all day as a kid and I see factual legends make fun of, denounce, and straight up say how full of crap certain legends are and say they aren't really a legend, that isn't me deciding, that's them. When I see a room of legends and suddenly some random guy I don't know walks in and NOT A SINGLE new school kid including myself knows the person yet all the old heads are greeting this person calling them a legend, it becomes clear that , like I said , some people are legends that we don't hear about. That individual was Ree2 . So no, I didn't claim anything, all of this was facts from the old heads and based on actual events. Lastly when an older legend is in the comments of this very video AGREEING with me and this video, it only proves my point more.
Throughout history especially in science, there are many occasions where people came up with similar concepts and theories, independently at the same time. The same happens with arts and music. The rise of electronic/ house music. The birth of aerosol graffiti. Maybe there is a super intellegence that humans can tap into on some level? Maybe coincidences just occur?

Unfortunately, the only good book on the market is Subway art. any other book, while entertaining is pretty much a waste of money. Most are either filled with BS stories mixed in with few true stories, or they're simply packed with BS from cover to cover.

Along the time i fell off of art and focused in other things and returning i know that u dont stream anymore but is there a good way to reach out to you for critiques and breakdowns etc? Iz was great, but he wasn't first or second generation. There are also other people who are interviewing the older writers like Charmin 65 to document the history. The only thing that I believe that you talked about was that your friend was lying.
the way i see it you shouldnt learn the history if you arent doing it everyday or very frequently because youre spending that time learning about peoples experiences and not getting up you college boys gotta go out more if you think all that matters when some old head is probably lying or forgetting parts of the story
Great job . Alot of the history was focused on the bronxs . Not brooklyn and queens . I interviewed alot of the old skool guys. Props to ree aka opel . He is a legend and vinny who gets no mention in history.

Oh my friend it's not about style at all, don't focus on that. Why? Well because any name can have style, style will come after years of practice and once you have it you can apply it to any name. @@Theartistblock he documented and widely excepted as the worlds first, you made the claim that he wasn't so you have the burden of truth and making more claims is not prof of your original claim. Graffiti at its core is writing your name for clout and i don't think the romans did that.

It was alread in ny in the 40s, and once again mr eternity. Once again plenty of others did graffiti before he did and yes they did it for clout, especially in ancient Rome long before he did. They made up fake names, wrote them publicly illegally, and took spots from one another and tried to get their name out there as much as possible, literally the essence of bombing thay youre referring to (I saw your other comment stating clout as a factor as well as this new comment).
Now, the person that made him famous, zephyr, even walked that statement back over on Instagram. Cornbread factually is not the world's first and to state that he is requires to either lie or requires you to intentionally ignore all those who came before. He documented his history so well, he also forgot when he started. He initially insisted on one year, then when that wasn't early enough he suddenly claims it was years earlier. Little does he know, even if he claimed it was in the 50s he'd still the race to be the first. That being said, you'll find any reason to ignore facts that don't fit your goal because you're less focused on the truth and facts an more focused on making anything fit your predetermined conclusion

thank you for your work,as we can see this happen to many things in history i believe respect is more important than history, but i understand the need for it, and for the art and craft,as with anything you have to invest time and understanding, and many hours of practice,we can sometimes get lost in "imitating" others work and not finding our own unique style and reason for doing it.. but thats jus me,i deal with a brain injury from motorcycle accidents and deal with some other stuff,found some therapy in it , my introduction in to the art many year ago, a friend showed me a documentary called- Infamy The Movie - Graffiti Documentary.very good and recommended if you are getting into the art😎505

Hmmmmm. I'm not a fan of this comment because I feel like you misunderstood while having good intentions. With all do respect the following is said in a kind way, keep that in mind.
So number 1 I didn't decide anything, simply stating facts isn't be deciding anything. It's true people lie in these interviews, it's true some people don't get the credit they deserved despite playing massive roles like iz the wiz) , it's true people only got fame due to movies. None of that is false. Also, when I'm around legends all day as a kid and I see factual legends make fun of, denounce, and straight up say how full of crap certain legends are and say they aren't really a legend, that isn't me deciding, that's them. When I see a room of legends and suddenly some random guy I don't know walks in and NOT A SINGLE new school kid including myself knows the person yet all the old heads are greeting this person calling them a legend, it becomes clear that , like I said , some people are legends that we don't hear about. That individual was Ree2 . So no, I didn't claim anything, all of this was facts from the old heads and based on actual events. Lastly when an older legend is in the comments of this very video AGREEING with me and this video, it only proves my point more.

Throughout history especially in science, there are many occasions where people came up with similar concepts and theories, independently at the same time. The same happens with arts and music. The rise of electronic/ house music. The birth of aerosol graffiti. Maybe there is a super intellegence that humans can tap into on some level? Maybe coincidences just occur?

But jokes aside, are there any good books or references who save statements from the old, old school? Never heard of Izthewiz till now and that feels just wrong.....
Unfortunately, the only good book on the market is Subway art. any other book, while entertaining is pretty much a waste of money. Most are either filled with BS stories mixed in with few true stories, or they're simply packed with BS from cover to cover.
