PRELUDIO n.14 composed by Jose Antonio de DONOSTIA, arranged for Guitar by Edmar Fenicio.
Jose Antonio de Donostia (1886-1956) was born in San Sebastian, Spain. He started his musical studies in Navarra, after having become a Capuchin monk and completed his studies later in Paris. He was a man of many talents, pianist, organist, composer, musicologist, writer and speaker.
Especially in the field of folklore he contributed much to the knowledge of Basque folk songs, by gathering old melodies.
As a composer he composed sacred as well as secular works. His love for Gregorian chant is clearly expressed in his compositions, as chant is frequently used.
De Donostia died in Lekaroz, Spain, in 1956.
This is what Edmar wrote to me:
“Yesterday I was thinking about writing a new arrangement and I chose a composer who wrote a large number of songs for the piano - Padre Jose Antonio de Donostia. It turns out that the composition DOLOR from him, is the only recorded by many guitarists.
To do so, I chose a notebook of 24 Preludes for piano and number 14 was chosen. The result seemed very good to me when listening to the Preludio.

Ele começou seu musical estudos em Navarra, depois de ter se tornado monge capuchinho e concluído mais tarde os estudos em Paris. Foi um homem de muitos talentos, pianista, organista, compositor, musicólogo, escritor e orador. Especialmente no campo do folclore contribuiu muito para o conhecimento das canções folclóricas bascas, reunindo melodias antigas. Como compositor compôs obras sacras e seculares. Seu amor pelo canto gregoriano é claramente expresso em suas composições, já que o canto é frequentemente usado. De Donostia morreu em Lekaroz, Espanha, em 1956. Isto é o que Edmar me escreveu: “Ontem eu estava pensando em escrever um novo arranjo e escolhi um compositor que escreveu um grande número de canções, para piano - Padre José Antonio de Donostia.
