Thats why you should dry it at low heat in the owen and finely Crush it and incoparate it lightly in the soil. Nutrient levels especially potassium should start to rise after a week or so.

So in other words we should be using bath water on our gardens instead of banana water😂. I sense the beginning of a new gardening sensation!

What AI said: While anecdotal evidence and some gardening websites suggest that soaking banana peels in water releases nutrients beneficial to plants, there isn't robust, peer-reviewed scientific data confirming the extent to which this process dissolves sufficient nutrients for significant fertilization. Studies focusing on the nutrient content of banana peels and their impact on plant growth often use different methods of application (e.g., direct incorporation into soil, compost, etc.), making direct comparisons difficult. Therefore, while banana peels contain valuable nutrients like potassium, the effectiveness of simply soaking them in water as a fertilizer lacks conclusive scientific backing.

I was a bit disappointed as I was drawn by the word 'proof' assuming some testing was involved whereas this is an argument/comparison.
A better conparison may be if a mob boss killed me and cut my skin open then put me in the bath for a month, I would expect some stuff might leach into the water then... (Ok that was a bit gruesome though sorry) An intact banana thrown in a bath for an hour definitely isnt claimed to leach anything.
The water is no longer clear water so there's something in there, and even if its just little bits of banana that's arguably more plant available than it was so it can't be fully dismissed.
While I dont disagree thr claims may be overstated and my banana peels go into the soil via a wormery, some concrete information is lacking given the large amount of empirical experience that is positive. A side by side plant growing experiment following the usual guidelines giving the weed/banana soaks an open minded chance would be the way to actually determine if there's a benefit.

Somewhere I read that potassium remains in it's ionic form even after absorbed by the plants. If it's true then potassium from banana skin could be dissolve in water. What do you think?

There's a difference between a living animal taking a bath and a rotten banana peel.
Also if you put it to ferment for weeks, then you might get some stuff in the water, the smell of the water is intense because it has changed.

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  Місяць тому

And what is that difference? Both remain as intact cells.
If it looks like banana leaves when you are finished - there is almost nothing in the tea.

@@Gardenfundamentals1 cells can exchange minerals/molecules, while keeping "intact".
Just like your body can easily absorb chemicals through the skin into the blood stream, but it doesn't mean your skin gets damaged.
So your hypothesis about intact cell is not the whole picture.
I agree with you that if you ground up in a food processor banana peels, you will make it easier for the plant to take it's nutrients, although fermentation might help.
And yes there's a chance that using a fertiliser product is a better way to give nutrients to your plants, it's already broken down and concentrated and the plant will enjoy it.
So it needs further testing to say how potent is a banana peel tea to your plant vs a product, and in what way should it be prepared to get the most benefit.
I wouldn't discard it so easily.

I think some people believe it because if you chop the peel into small pieces you can extract the nutrients. They see little particles in the water and now you have bro science. They forgot the microbiotic have to break it down to make the nutes plant available. Just my 2 cents.

Potassium is a salt that dissolves in water and remains clear in water. Potassium in water can be taken up by plants. It's not a complex molecule that requires enzymes or microbial activity.

Why then when we eat bananas do we get the nutrients out of the banana? Because we digest them. You just have to digest the cells in plant matter in order to release the nutrients.

    • @Gardenfundamentals1

Steeping your banana peels in water will have limited beneficial results as there will be very little decomposition though, better to use beer and some soda instead which will allow bacteria and microbes to feed on the sugars produced during the breakdown process.
