    ABOUT TODAYS VIDEO: How to pick the healthiest kibble for dogs
    Here are 5 things a kibble must have to be considered the healthier option.
    Number one is perhaps the most important and something I want you to really take on board. And that's the fact that a canine, your dog, simply does not need carbohydrates in their diet to thrive, period!
    Number two, following on from number one is that the ingredients in a kibble must not contain corn, rice, potatoes, wheat, soy or barley. These ingredients are high in carbohydrates, often GMO or genetically modified organisms, contaminated with mycotoxins and with high levels of Glyphosate in them.
    Number three, as I just mentioned, the kibble must contain naturally derived vitamins and minerals because the synthetic alternatives is not well absorbed or even widely recognized by your dogs digestive system, often seen as foreign objects and expelled from the body as smelly, expensive and very concentrated urine. Synthetics also lead to health issues with acidosis, stones and UTI's.
    Number four is the protein levels of the kibble. They need to be as high as possible. Preferably 30%+ and on a dry weight basis, that's important. And has to be at least 75% animal based protein. So make sure the first 3 ingredients on the nutrition panel are animal based.
    And Number 5, the kibble must have ingredients you know the origin of and where they were made. This one is tricky when the manufacturer states proudly made in the USA and the ingredients are shipped from China. So always be chasing up the pet food manufacturer for their pet food ingredient origins and stay vigilant.

    Hi Dan! Thank you for your very informative videos! I have an 8 year old German Shepherd with a chicken allergy. I've always had him on high quality kibbles with low carb counts and added fresh food as toppers since he came to me at 1years old. He was already neutered then (neutered around 6months old I believe). He has been a lean body condition score his whole life ranging from 4 to 5 out of 9 because I was always aware more weight would put more strain on his joints. But that being said, he is a large GSD who at BCS 4 (ideal lean) weighs around 98lbs.
    Recently I noticed he has some difficulty jumping that he never had before and some pain in his joints. My vet recommends putting him on Gabapentin (for Nerve pain?) and Carprofen or Galliprant (NSAIDs) but I'm hesitant to start him on what she called lifelong pain management drugs espcially an NSAID. Would you have recommendations?

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  9 місяців тому +2

      Hi Ashley, sensitive dogs GSD's. I highly recommend ignoring your vet, a sad path indeed to a sad end, trust me.
      For the joints use omega 3's (canned sardines: amzn.to/3vaXrj6 and omega 3 oil: amzn.to/3vDdtjX), Green Lipped Mussel Oil: amzn.to/3Yx9Z10, and CBD oil: healthydogforlife.com/CBD Buy a full spectrum CBD oil and use a 500 mg or 1000 mg strength. All great for dog joint health and pain management.
      I recommend NO Nsaids or gabapantin. The above is better and natural.
      And here's some diet help:
      If you feed kibble, the best thing to do first is remove 50% of the kibble from the bowl and replace with raw eggs (best) soft boiled (ok) and preferably organic, canned sardines (in plain water with skin & bone intact: 12 Pack Sardines - amzn.to/3vaXrj6), some part cooked and blended veggies like broccoli, kale, green beans, spinach, brussel sprouts, bok choy etc and some meat proteins such as chicken meat, even better.
      If not liking to prepare vegetables then these freeze dried greens are antioxidant packed to help protect cells from free radical damage, cellular repair, support immunity, joints, skin issues, heart and eye health: Core Immune CARE Greens: shrsl.com/3uv18
      Now your dogs getting live enzymes, probiotics, Omega 3 oils, the highest quality proteins and nutritional assimilation from eggs (100%), and antioxidants, minerals and vitamins from vegetables.
      Always add a quality probiotic to improve digestion and gut health: (skin issues/yeast/itchy dogs/allergies) use this one: amzn.to/3yoURqU and for all other dogs use this one: shrsl.com/3uv7l
      If you want an excellent, VERY low carbohydrate kibble at just 5%, (high carbohydrates cause chronic inflammation, with itchy skin, yeast, poor gut health, ear infection, UTI's and hot spots, and nearly all kibbles are 40+% carbs!).
      Ketona has high protein at 47% (dogs thrive on proteins), correct fats at 15% and natural additives, so have a look at Ketona Kibble: healthydogforlife.com/KetonaKibble. I recommend still adding the fresh foods even with the best kibble.
      By introducing fresh foods, really lowering carbs use, introducing greens, omega 3's, proteins and a better more suitable kibble, your dog will respond with healing and improved health over the next 12 weeks.
      Some must do's:
      Zero vaxx once adult (auto immune disease issues rife from over vaccination)
      If Rabies is mandatory, use Protect after shots: (Humic & Fulvic acid) amzn.to/33P2P1i
      Very low carbs in diet, 10% or less (cause of inflammation, poor gut health and later, cancer)
      No vet drugs, there's effective natural alternatives (always!)
      Feed a healthier diet with at least 50% fresh food in it.
      NO white foods ie white rice, potato, pasta..

      Hi and thanks for dropping in. The crushed eggshells is for calcium needs and only really needed if feeding raw meats with no bone content.

      there's antioxidants that really help in a number of ways including joint aid: Green Vibrance: amzn.to/3cOgzLu,
      there's Green Lipped Mussels (powder): amzn.to/3sZnTfN proven very effective for joint health and there's the traditional Glucosamine - amzn.to/3wIWbVl a good long term option.

      I could not get passed a bad gateway to that brand so can't really comment but to say it uses synthetic vits/minerals, probably around 30-40% carbs. Reasonable ingredients, so pretty average dry dog food.
      I definitely recommend this information, just use your kibble in the scenario:
      If you feed kibble, the best thing to do first is remove 50% of the kibble from the bowl and replace with raw eggs (best) soft boiled (ok) and preferably organic, canned sardines (in plain water with skin & bone intact: 12 Pack Sardines - amzn.to/3vaXrj6), some part cooked and blended veggies like broccoli, kale, green beans, spinach, brussel sprouts, bok choy etc and some meat proteins such as chicken meat, even better but not essential.

      @@DanScott1 Thank you for an incredibly helpful answer Dan! I've read it all carefully. At the bottom you mention adult dogs not needing vaccination, if I'm not mistaken? So you don't think they need yearly vaccinations once an adult dog as it can affect their immune system?
      I did look up the Ketonation kibble brand but unfortunately they only distribute within USA at the moment.
      My dog unfortunately has kennel cough at the moment so I started on your channel watching a video about that. He also has a lot of skin allergy issues, itches. I will definitely try to incorporate those other fresh food ingredients into his diet that you mention and see how he goes.
      I might need to take him to the vet today for antibiotics to help his kennel cough however. And there, I will ask about the echinacea tincture you pointed to in your other video. Thank you once again!

    • @DanScott1

      @@anthonyt7813 For the cough you need natures antibiotic oregano oil: just find a good one, add 1 drop to tsp olive oil and add to food for 5 days once daily to fix the cough.
      Give ZERO vaccines to your dog! They will simply ruin your dogs health.

      @DanScott1 Brody is 8 years old. He has been having seizures for 3 years. They started 19 hours after he received his rabies booster. He would have then every 9 to 30 days. Last Sept 2022 he had them every 4 hours. I gave on and vet prescribed Phenobarbitual. Checked blood a month later and his liver was off the charts. Was told to slowly discontinue the Phenobarbital and added Keppra. Still having seizures 9 to 20 days.
      They added Zonisamide.
      Still the same. I had been giving CBD (nuleaf naturals) from the beginning. I was told to discontinue as it caused his liver numbers to go up.
      Brody is also on MCT oil, salmon oil and proviable probiontics. And Keppra with fresh cooked chicken or beef. I just read about magnesium and started giving him bisglycimate magnesium a week ago. I will start adding the vegetables and get him on a more healthy diet. AND add the CBD oil back in his diet. Hi Dan,
    Thankyou so much for your help with these videos- I've watched and rewatched many of your videos to get the best info I can on healing my pups yeasty or gut issue. Diet is key for sure, I just changed her diet back in December to the Badlands Ranch superfood complete, this was before I found your videos, I think it is a great food so far! It's expensive, I guess to some but honestly I think it's worth it. Have you heard of this brand it's from the actress Katherine Heigl and let me tell you my dog is a very picky eater but she ate this one right up and every day since. I had an unfortunate incident at the vet in the past with vax and I have to say her allergies had gotten 10x worse after it. My husband took her to the vet for a separate problem and they gave her a second set of shots so she got two doses of every vaccine within a 3 month time frame. I was so angry they did that. They messed up big time thinking she was there for shots and my husband didn't say anything I guess not realizing but I still feel like he should've known too but the vet should have known that she had her shots already and I just wished I didn'thave to work that day to have taken her myself! Made me beyond angry then I asked what complications could happen and they were just like she'll be fine over the phone and it's good that she's not a small dog. That was unacceptable to me, then I realized I was the wrong one for following the every day thinking I'm doing the best for my girly by listening to the vet and not questioning all they do. So I started researching and realized I'll never get her vaxxed again. On top of that, the diet I changed completely. She still suffers a little from paw licking and sometimes scooting but I don't think worms though bc her poop never has anything that resembles what I'm supposed to see if they were worms. But I do think that the allergies is it like she's itchy bc her gut has been overloaded with bad for forever! Any tips will be appreciated and still just thankyou for these videos! Thankyou again really!

    Hi Dan, I would value your advice to me on how best to wean my Maltese puppies from their mother's milk over the next few weeks: they are four weeks old this Thursday 11th Jan 2024. So what home cooked foods would be best for them? And what ratio of protein to carb should I use for their diet? I will of course make sure the food is soup like in texture and easy to lap. For me, it is not an easy thing to find a factory produced puppy dog food that I would consider helpful or healthy. Your knowledge on nutrition is greatly appreciated. My surname is Scott also. Thank you Dan.

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  4 місяці тому

      Well Mr Scott, it depends on what diet you want to fed them?
      They are small dogs so I'd want to feed them a raw food diet knowing I can stay on budget. And in this case raw green tripe is the best puppy food.
      Here's an example of a pre-made raw food product provider: shrsl.com/3yxwr
      And here's one that provides the ingredients to a raw food diet: shrsl.com/3yxwk
      Or you could move onto freeze dried raw, here's an example: Bixby Rawbble Freeze Dried Raw chicken - amzn.to/3YH6GVD
      Bixby Rawble - Freeze Dried Lamb - amzn.to/3kDbUmX
      But I'd still go with green tripe for puppy food as it's a complete food nutritionally. Comes as frozen chubs usually, just defrost to above room temp and serve. Pups go nuts for it too!

It’s been over a month. He’s been on 2 rounds of Clavamox I’m thinking it Has to do with his gut health but not sure. The sneezing is aggravated when he starts to eat. He has bad teeth. It could also be the sinus. He’s also started to snore a little bit. I stopped the antibiotics and started making his food ground turkey, blueberries, carrots, broccoli, spinach, and pumpkin no oil or spices but I want to add a prebiotic and probiotic as well if that’s going to help him. @DanScott1  9 місяців тому +1

      Ah, this is a classic case of, the dog ate fresh food, found it incredible and life giving, now understands kibble is crap and does not give that life giving feeling like fresh food.
      Frenchies are smart, what you'll now need to do is this.. but your Frenchie will love you forever if he can have this improved diet:
      Always add a quality probiotic to improve digestion and gut health: (skin issues/yeast/itchy/allergy dogs) use this one: amzn.to/3yoURqU and for all other dogs use this one: shrsl.com/3uv7l

      For instant improvement of existing condition, it's CBD oil: healthydogforlife.com/CBD
      Inflammation is the underlying cause of artritis in dogs, not age. Long term low grade chronic inflammation is the cause of most ill health in dogs.
      What are the problems:
      Processed kibbles are inflammatory.
      Additives and preservatives in pet food are inflammatory.
      Sugars and starches (carbs) are inflammatory.
      GMO's are inflammatory.
      Over vaccination, vet drugs like flea&tick or antibiotics are all very inflammatory.
      Bad fats in the diet are inflammatory.
      NSAIDS eventually make inflammation worse.
      How to fix this:
      Start by fixing gut health, with fixing the diet.
      A far better option is adding fresh foods into the diet.

    This video just showed up on my home page. Very good information. For those who must feed kibble for whatever reason, Ketona seems to be a viable option. I would hope dog owners would feed at least some wet food or homemade food as well. One thing is the high protein. AAFCO maximum for an adult dog is 30%. High levels of protein, especially in an older dog, could cause problems. Not saying it will, but all pets are different. You would want to watch the results of their blood work. A 24 pound bag of Ketona for $4.87 a pound is not extreme. The fresh chicken and ground beef I feed my cats are cheaper. Also, the second ingredient is chicken meal. Not a big fan. The Ketona website does not have the nutrient profile for calcium, phosphorus and sodium.

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you. It's not so much high protein as quality of protein for older dogs. The additives are natural and carbs are very low at 5%. Dogs don't do well on carbs and most foods are 40%+ carbs.
      And yes, I do recommend adding eggs, meats, sardines and veg to really make a meal complete.
      That AFFCO maximum is off by 20%!

      @@DanScott1 Thank you for your reply. I agree, the better the protein source, the lower the amounts of nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus, which is better for pets. Then we tried a yeast guard protocol, and she has brown pudding or mucous like diarrhea. Our conventional vet just gives drugs. I just have no idea what to do. Hello! I’ve been feeding my dog and 3 puppies a raw diet (mainly chicken and beef). But it’s so expensive that I recently switched to a protein rich kibble (ORIJEN Grain Free, high protein). Now I’m wondering if I should leave them on the raw diet for health benefits? But I was confused on what else to add to a raw diet. Can they live on only meat?

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  2 місяці тому

      Raw will always beat kibble hands down for health.
      There is another high protein kibble and very low carbs called Ketona: healthydogforlife.com/KetonaKibble but again, it's expensive because of the protein content.
      For raw check out raw green tripe for example as it's cheaper than pure meat, very well digested and a complete nutrition food: shrsl.com/3yxwk
      It's a puppies favorite too.. nice and smelly.
      You'll have to do the math but raw eggs and sardines are protein rich which can be added to the meat options.
      You can make friends with a local butcher and ask to save the scraps. There's raw cooperatives on facebook for example that order in bulk to save costs. Same with local raw feeding dog owners clubs who can get deals which is great if you have freezer space.
      You can even advertize on craigslist or gumtree for freezer burn produce wanted.. just a thought.
      Dogs need around 50% meat, 15% bone, 10% offal/organs ie liver, 5-10% veg and 15% fats.
      The 15% bone content is important for calcium that goes with the phosphorous in the meat for balance and if not feeding meaty bones then use bone meal powder: amzn.to/3OsOXMf
      15% fats is important, no less that 12% and no more than 20%. The meat has fat in it and the rest would come from adding some extra omega 3 oils if needed.
      Hope that helps.

Do you have any thoughts on this with regards on how to remedy this problem? Hey...I read a comment somebody asking you to suggest a natural ear cleaner and you recomended lavendor oil. So what should we use to clean the ear canal and what to insert inside the canal to clean?

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  10 місяців тому

      If the ear canal is constantly becoming dirty and having to be clened often, then I'd look at diet.
      Add more fresh foods into the diet, low carb use, no vaccines, no drugs/synthetics and the ears will improve.. a lot!
      For now, use q-tips.
      Here's some diet help:
      Always add a quality probiotic to improve digestion and gut health: (skin issues/yeast/itchy dogs) use this one: amzn.to/3yoURqU and for all other dogs use this one: shrsl.com/3uv7l

      @bj5253 10 місяців тому +1

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  10 місяців тому

      @@bj5253 Once you start feeding a more fresh food based diet, the ears simply stay clean by themselves. For now as a probiotic, give a quarter tsp of fesh fine chopped garlic once every second day added to meals and also a small piece of banana in the meal. This gives probiotics and prebiotics.
      If the ears are clean now, nothing to worry about. If there's a little dirt, use cotton bud/cotton ball and some saline water (pinch of salt mixed in small cup of fresh water). Any water falls down the ear canal, the dog will shake head to get it out.

      Hi Cindy, I'd change up the diet and add a supplement or two to focus on very low carbs (carbs are bad for dogs), good nutrition, lowering inflamation and improving gut heath.
      The lowest carb kibble I know is Ketona, basically a protein based kibble: healthydogforlife.com/KetonaKibble
      Now, with this kibble you take out one third of your dogs meal volume and replace with eggs, canned sardines, a little meat option and some part cooked and mashed veg. Also add a little bit of raw liver or other organ based food, just a heaped desert spoon full daily for extra vitamins and minerals and again, add small to begin with to avoid upset.
      Do this daily and feed two meals daily with injections after as you usally do. Transition to this diet option over two weeks with old to new foods and add this soil based probiotic from the forst meal but start it small first week: amzn.to/3yoURqU
      She'll pick up more vigour and health on this diet. And keep an eye on insulin needs as the blood sugar numbers will drop.
      NO vaccines, no carbs, no sugars, no fruit, no synthetics.
      Also buy in some freeze dried greens and add a 1/4 scoop to each meal: amzn.to/3R1m3HR
      Tons of antioxidants much needed and other good ingredients (wont need to prepare veggies if using the greens).

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  Рік тому +3

      Yes it will but with this extra diet information I highly recommend you follow also:
      If you feed kibble, the best thing to do first is remove 50% of the kibble from the bowl and replace with raw eggs (best) soft boiled (ok) and preferably organic, canned sardines (in plain water with skin & bone intact: 12 Pack Sardines - amzn.to/3vaXrj6), some part cooked and blended veggies like broccoli, kale, green beans, spinach, brussel sprouts, bok choy etc and some meat proteins such as chicken meat, even better but not essential.
      If not liking to prepare vegetables then these freeze dried greens are antioxidant packed to help protect cells from free radical damage, cellular repair, support immunity, joints, skin issues, heart and eye health: Core Immune CARE Greens: shrsl.com/3uv18
      Now your dogs getting live enzymes, probiotics, Omega 3 oils, the highest quality proteins and nutritional assimilation from eggs (100%), and antioxidants, minerals and vitamins from vegetables and freeze dried greens.
      Always add a quality probiotic to improve digestion and gut health: (skin issues/UTI's/yeast/itchy dogs) use this one: amzn.to/3yoURqU and for all other dogs use this one: shrsl.com/3uv7l

      Brown rice is good for energy for dogs that need the extra calories. Not the best nutritionally for a dog as they really only need proteins and fats.

      This one is tricky. 80% of pups do not survive, sorry. Some pups have a better long-term prognosis than others with severe symptoms. Pups with the best chance of survival are:
      Pups who gain weight
      Pups who are able to be calm and rest after feeding
      Pups who don’t have repeated bouts of aspiration pneumonia.
      After feeding, sit the dogs bum/or standing back leggs on the floor and have the front legs up on your lap for as long as possible to allow food to travel down into the stomach.
      Make up and feed bone broth to get nutrients into the pup if hard food is not going in.
      But it takes a significant commitment of time and energy to nurse the pups who do survive to one year.

    Unfortunately most research debunks much of the (mis)information he is sharing. Please consider other sources when researching animal diets. Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores and rely on carbohydrates for a balanced diet and energy source.

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  9 днів тому

      A dog’s teeth reflect the mechanics of the ripping and tearing of food. They also possess a shortened gastrointestinal tract, versus the longer GI tract of an omnivore or herbivore. In addition, dogs don’t have amylase, an enzyme that breaks down sugars, in their saliva, like an omnivore and herbivore would have. The relative inability to convert plant based sources of Omega-3 fatty acids into EPA and DHA is also a strong indication of carnivore status.
      Despite this, omnivorous humans have been feeding dogs omnivorous diets for years, filled with plant based protein sources such as corn and rice. And this is why dogs now live to an average age of 11.5 when they are genetically able to live into their 20's.
      Cheap omnivores carbohydrate diets are killing dogs at a faster rate than ever in history.

      @@dannyturner7967 I have only hard copy of my raw diet book, all the others are ebooks.
      Here's some basic help:
      It's vital to give your dog a good Omega-3 oil option too, and I recommend the best in (Ahi flower oil with Green Lipped Mussel Oil): amzn.to/3Yx9Z10 This one's for dogs with the added benefit of being excellent for joint health too.
      Now your dogs getting live enzymes, probiotics, Omega 3 oils, the highest quality proteins and nutritional assimilation from eggs (100%), and antioxidants, minerals and vitamins from vegetables.
      Always add a quality probiotic to improve digestion and gut health: (skin issues/yeast/itchy/allergy dogs) use this one: amzn.to/3yoURqU and for all other dogs use this one: shrsl.com/3uv7l

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  Рік тому +2

      Those carbohydrates are inflammatory to dogs. So are the 'no grain' alternatives they use instead like potatos, soy and tapioca etc. It's important to give low carbs to dogs as it's proteins they thrive on. So eggs, canned sardines, fish generally and meats/green tripe are the best foods for dogs. That's why I recommend mixing up a kibble diet with fresh foods:
      If you feed kibble, the best thing to do first is remove 50% of the kibble from the bowl and replace with raw eggs (best) soft boiled (ok) and preferably organic, canned sardines (in plain water with skin & bone intact: 12 Pack Sardines - amzn.to/3vaXrj6), some part cooked and blended veggies like broccoli, kale, green beans, spinach, brussel sprouts, bok choy etc and some meat proteins such as chicken meat, even better but not essential.

    Dan, but what if you do feed your dog only all natural chemical dye free dog food & have for awhile. I feed them: FRESH PET, in a roll which is grain free chicken recipe with spinach & potato.
    Yet they still poop alot of blood?
    Could it be something else going on?
    I am going to buy the Slippery elm, & try this immediately.

      Slippery Elm Bark Powder - amzn.to/3CbHXx0 start with this to stop the blood and lower inflammation in the gut. This is probably leaky gut. Feed on empty stomach.
      The diet needs some fresh foods in it ie eggs, canned sardines, veg. Use soil based probiotics: amzn.to/3yoURqU start them small and slow!
      And try some colostrum for the sensitivities: amzn.to/3H79rad

    • @DanScott1
      @DanScott1  Місяць тому

      It's the third ingredient. Yes, it's 7% or so. It's because the 1st ingredient has huge protein concentration. So basically it's 46% total protein, 90% of which is animal based and way higher than any other kibble on the market (even after taking out the pea protein). And super low carbs at 5% (so important) and no-one else uses low carbs!
