You can say that again🤣. And even worse if you live in an apartment, so you don't have the facilities to wash your bike after each ride😥. That really sucks

Upgraded from hardtail to full suspension recently, and of course bought some GMBN kits and a new POC helmet. Guess the worst was answering the the wife's "Is that a new jersey you got? How many do you need?! LOL.
Yeah you're absolutly right about the expanse. Bought my Casual MTB 2 Years ago for 600€, after a big diskussion with my wife about a "real"/fully MTB it ended up into change things on my bike, the only original parts on my bike are now frame, bars and the rear rim. Over a 1200€ later i got decent trail hardtail. New grips and pedals, New/partly used 12speed drivetrain with new BB and cranks, used new air forks with more travel, new qualtiy headset, new 4 Piston brakes, new boost rim in front and new tyres. Next Change is dropper Post and new rear rim. It still won't be finished after that. If the frame brakes I will buy a new one. All in all I can say. It´s still a budget bike..... for nearly 2000€. Some may say it would be cheaper to buy a complete better MTB but if the finance minister (my wife) says no there is and was no other chance for me to get a better bike.
So you basically got a new bike through rebuilding the current one, fair play. Did the exact same thing with mine, only the forks and cranks left to change.
My biggest gripe about mountain biking is honestly some of the online community on places like Reddit. When looking for advice or help with certain things, certain "experts" only offer up the suggestion of throwing away whatever ride you have and getting something more expensive without answering the actual question. Even if your bike is well over the $4k mark
Reddit is a terrible place for answers, people are generally assholes on it. Always try and find help through Facebook groups and social, UA-cam insta etc 👍
The three things that I find extremely funny and of course frustrating are: 1. You become a bicycle snob, you cannot look at a bicycle without comparing it with your own. 2. Perfect number of bicycles is n+1 3. Having to send your bicycle in for a service and not being able to ride while it's in the shop. Of course the days it goes in for service is the first time in 3 weeks that it is not raining outside :-(
On one side, winter in our country is fun, because snow prevents most of injuries during crashes. On the other side, it is bloody cold, so yeah, the last bit is very relatable
MTBing is the very best sport and hobby. i will never be a champion at it except maybe at a local race and in the 50+ year old category, but i love it. i compete as a professional arm wrestler and i can and will be a world champion at it in my weight class and in the left and right hand divisions, but i love mountain biking even more.
Got my first broken collarbone going off a jump three weeks ago. Silly mistake, wasn't looking at my landing. So, I definitely feel the "injuries" part, and I know where to keep my eyes in the air next time! Was a solid roadie until a year ago when I transferred to all MTB, I'm used to the odd crash but not this sort that leaves me crippled for weeks after!
Though with all those... the MTB community is surprisingly amazing, even with my bike looking like it's going to expload, no one ever insulted my bike. That shows how the community just loves people and that's amazing.
As someone who lives in an apartment and parks the bike in the living room, I don't ride in the winter unless the ground is frozen. Neither in the summer if it's relly wet and the bike won't dry up when returning from the forest (a ride of like 3km or 2 miles). However, since I only ride it for fun, getting back the stamina from last season only takes about six runs in two weeks, after that there is only minor gains throughout the season.
Fell off a skinny, landed on my right leg, torn meniscus, and ACL, --> surgery, three months in, still recovering, still not riding, still taking my time to ride.
In spain we are spoiled by sunny weather, in the summer a bit too much. But in winter time I hate it when riding friends want to go out at 8 am when it is 5°C, just because somebody needs to be at home at 12. I hate riding in the cold, it takes away all pleasure. Two hours later it's 12°C and much nicer to ride.
The fact that not IF but WHEN the injuries will occur. But presuming your within a reasonable distance of your skill set and your risk management is decent , the chance to ride another day is always high !
The constant maintenance does get annoying. I don't mean cleaning the bike. I mean adjusting derailleurs, tensioning cables, replacing brake pads, tightening bolts, lubing hubs, fixing the chain, calibrating various things... If you want your bike to ride at peak condition you have to keep it at peak condition... and all that maintenance can become tedious.
Speaking of muddy "winter", here in Finland we got mud-season like 9 months and the winter is winter covered in snow. Light snow can be nice but if there is just too much of snow, it's rather impossible to go around. Fatbikes can give some chance but not at this winter.
So I’m in Arizona where the winter is our riding season because the summer get actually HOT. 115 F or I think 41 C. Oh and it rains maybe, if we are lucky, 10 days out of the year. We deal with super dry and dusty conditions. The one thing you really shouldn’t do out here though is hose the bike off. Damp towel and wipe the bike off. The water out here is full of minerals and when you hose your bike off, if corrodes anything aluminum, fades paint, make carbon ashy and look sun damaged and destroys spoke nipples and bearings. Trust me on this. People hosing bikes down has made me a lot money. I’ve worked in bike shops for 15 years. 😁
Still I started MTB,ing last year I wasn´t fully aware of the various consistencies of Mud , but now i just use the pressure washer on my bike , shoes and trousers , saves cloging up the washing machine ;)
Winter is my favorite time of year to ride. More treacherous, sure. Cold? duh. Is it more fun? You bet it is. I have learned more from riding in the snow and muck than I ever have in the past 6 months. And I don't baby my bike by washing it constantly. Holy cow, the things are engineered to take punishment. If they can't survive a little dirt and grime, then why make them?
Gloves will also help reduce injury when you crash...and get you back riding again faster than if you have to wait for the bruising and gravel rash to go away.
I love riding when wet and muddy it helps with bike control although yes it's a bit messy once I get home all cold and wet but well worth the fun that's to be had in the mud

Another one that sucks is when you get the first scratch or ding in a new bike but the worst is winter. Even if you manage to escape work before it gets dark, you waste a lot of time putting on 7 layers if clothing and cleaning your bike.
The most difficult obstacle in being a mountain biker is not a massive jump, or a difficult terrain. It's being able to buy an upgrade or a new bike without the wife finding out.

I'd say that the expenses, both when you first purchase your bike as well as when you need to replace parts, is the biggest drawback. And parts don't hold up as well as I'd expect them to. Finicky 12 speed drive trains, carbon everything, etc. In my mind, reliability and ruggedness is one of the most important qualities in an MTB because that bike _will_ take a horrible beating when you're out and about and crashing.
Gotta say when my front tire just skidded randomly, broke my finger and scratched the hell of the stantion I tought "screw this". But got over it because it's the coolest sport ever !
The worst thing is the cost, compared to say running or hiking!!! I spent around £1.3k on a holiday hiking the GR20 - so in effect could have four hiking holidays for the cost of a £5k mountainbike.
I almost hit a booby trap someone set at my local trail, managed to thread it like a needle and avoid it though. Someone out there really hates mountain bikes and was out to hurt someone, I'm just glad I found it before some poor kid might've ran over it. Embracing crashes and glorifying injuries … the most stupid thing I’ve heard. Yes risks are inherent in sports but saying you aren’t pushing your self unless you crash or injure is the worst advice. This is in your worst mtb advice video about ‘just send it’ mentality. Not cool GMBN.
Having a full-time manual job I taught myself to embrace the slow path of progression. So far I’m getting pretty good (imo) and have had no bad crashes and the worse injury I’ve had is lost skin. I’ve only been riding for two and a bit years and as long as you understand the basics and technique of the new things you try you’ll be fine. 👍🏻
@3:53, kids, never do this. By the way, pointless video. Instead of posting a video on a regular basis, why not post it when there's SOMETHING interesting to say.

Is that the gmbn helmet colour? I see you guys wear it a lot! In my very humble opinion, it sucks! 😁
Risky yes, got my elbow stitched up yesterday 🩹

@3:53, kids, never do this. By the way, pointless video. Instead of posting a video on a regular basis, why not post it when there's SOMETHING interesting to say.
