Secretariat - the greatest horse there ever was. I live near Saratoga, NY and am not a diehard horse racing fan. I teared up watching his unbelievable performance in the Belmont and still do to this day watching all his races. Chick Anderson made some of the greatest comments when he called his races. If I have one regret in my life it was passing on a chance to see him in person in 1973 when Onion beat him in the Whitney. No excuses, but most people don't realize how sick he was that day. I believe I will never see another one like him. A supernatural horse.

Yes, he shouldn't have run. These trainers get big egos when they become famous & think they know it all.& would never listen to anyone beneath it. I like Baffort but see the same issue with him. A good example with him is the recent Belmont race. National Treasure shouldn't have been entered as he wasn't qualified & he didn't do well.

You bet: when he got to the turn at the top of the home stretch at the Belmont, he looked down that long, long straightaway and ran himself forever into eternal immortality,,,
My wife visited Claiborne in 1980, and visited with Secretariat. She patted him, and had her picture taken with him also. It has been enlarged to poster size, and hangs in our office. Once in a lifetime; she was lucky to be able to meet him. RIP Big Red.

My Grandfather took me to watch Secretariat race the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes💙 God Bless my Grandfather who had retired from the window at the track who was going to go fishing, but heard whispers about this amazing horse. I guess we had that backstage pass from my Grandfather knowing Big Reds team. I can feel the goose bumps when I kept looking up to meet his eyes. What a smart and attentive beautiful horse he was. Little did my Grandfather know he was going to win big betting on that spectacular horse. I just remember my Grandfather saying "Good God this kind of horse comes but once in a lifetime"🌹💙🌹💙🌹💙

Thanks for this. Who doesn't wish s/he could have stood beside the legendary Secretariat? I read that his groom when racing, Eddie Sweat, just called him Red, but he certainly was Big Red as well. What a powerful-looking horse--with a huge neck. Magnificent animal...and champion.

His behavior was relaxed and chill, not lazy. He was a very well behaved horse or the groom would not have given him so much line. Secretariat just stood there looking around and accepted the people coming up to him. His lower lip was dropped which meant he was relaxed. He looked in really good physical condition here before he put on too much weight. Stunning, well quartered, beautiful neck and shoulder, and had beautiful balance. I would have loved to have seen him in person.

I remember in '73 most of the news was about Watergate, and Secretariat, which was unusual for so much coverage about a racehorse. Of course I came to realize why. The recent Preakness this the winner came within 2/5 of second of tying Big Red's time. Close, but his record still stands. I'm grateful I can watch his races at will, and all the content here, that's available.
In 1973 they said it would be 75 years before the first horses would begin to catch up to his times. Almost 50 years later and they are right so far. He was a dream!
Remember though that Secretariat was last in that race... at first. But still set the record at the end due to a massive burst coming into the back stretch. I mean he passed EVERYBODY like they were in reverse!

Look back down the years. There were many amazing horses that we’ve watched run. With each passing we said the same thing. Never another like him. That is true. Unless we are willing to clone race horses. In this life great champions are always waiting to be born. It’s a crap shoot. Where and when. Some who have a great blood behind them are expected to do well. But a lot of times it can be a “dark horse “. A horse whose bloodline is ok but not great. Could it be the way genes combine. Maybe it’s the combinations we pick that don’t give us something better than the sum of its parents. Lots of times when I watch a horse race I see a combination of types running together. Some horses are obvious sprinters. Others through developed strength and stamina are more distance horses. The problem is two fold. One the fixed distance that most races are set at. And two, we train horses that we know are fast, but not distance horses and expect them to compete and win. No sprinter is going to be a triple crown winner. Look at the races between Sham and Secretariat. Sham could keep up with him through the first half to three fourths of the race. His jockey whipped him so bad but that can’t change reality. Sham was a sprinter and “Big Red” was a distance horse. Except for the Belmont, he came from last place and passed the whole field. Personally I like runners like that. They are inspirational. There are a few horses that can get in the front and stay there until the finish line. I’m glad he retired when he did. Horse racing takes a toll on animals. Someday when we aren’t looking a foal will be born with the potential. But he o r she will need the right people around them who can recognize the potential that could be developed.

Agreed about the chain: that is so rude and unnecessary. Who else had chains on in this country ? the enslaved. I have seen chains on other horses, too, in various videos. It is utterly disrespectful and unconscionable, period.

No. To be officially registered with the US Jockey Club, a Thoroughbreds’ offspring must be the result of a “live cover”, meaning no artificial insemination, cloning or embryo transfers are permitted. (This helps control the population and protect the breed)
