Some days, when everything is going wrong, this is the song playing in my head! Songs, like prayers, help you to laugh, cry, be joyous, and try to move on through this journey of life
About 40yrs ago in the dollar bin at my local KMart I picked up a Billie Holiday tape it was all the rehearsals for this set. Cursing and all. So happy I got to hear the finished product. Thank you!!!
'One evening in the 70s on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood I caught the composer, Matt Dennis-music-Tom Adair-lyrics of this bittersweet ballad (1940) playing piano & singing his American songbook gold nugget 'An indelible evening to say the least
Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Tony Scott on clarinet, Budd Johnson on tenor sax, Carl Drinkard on piano, Billy Bouer on guitar, Leonard Gaskin on bass and Cozy Cole on drums. Recorded in New York City on February 14, 1955.
(Cont'd) Even as a child of no more than five years of age and myself already beginning to feel more pain than joy in living, I often wondered, listening to Holiday, how she kept her sanity. Every tone of her voice tells you that she's suffering. You just can't produce that sound if living is joyful.
She always puts me in a special place..I love her and her amazing band..so soul filled . Could only wish I was alive then to dress and go to see her perform in old Chicago...who knows....maybe I was.. that's why her and her band resonate with me so much...old soul I guess. ✌🍷
No one I mean no one sings this like Lady freaking Day. When she sings this my whole mood changes. She don't try to make the blues sound pink . She wants you to know damn it every thing bad happens to me! And you can only say Me to Lady me too!
Ikr. But Samara Joy covers it with humor. You can tell she has lead the charmed life that Billie did not! Thus far…life will throw curveballs. Billie hung in there until she just couldn’t. Her name rings out tho now and forever. A lot to be said for self determination and persevering despite mortgaged castles!
This song was written by Matt Dennis (music) and Tom Adair (lyrics). Sounds like it could be Carmichael/Mercer but it’s not. Great song and recording, thanks.
Holiday wasn't just a singer; she was an instrument! And this wasn't a song, it was an experience, a tragic one at that! A segment of the writer's autobiography, if truth be told.
Thanks , love the recording forever. BUT PLEASE don't kill me Miss Murder. Hell, what would happen to my piano and trombone, my dog can't play either. Not only Billie's voice, but everyone playing; beautiful.
Black cats creep across my path Until I'm almost mad I must have 'roused the devil's wrath Cause all my luck is bad I make a date for golf and you can bet your life it rains I try to give a party and the guy upstairs complains I guess I'll go through life Just catchin' colds and missin' trains Everything happens to me I never miss a thing I've had the measles and the mumps And every time I play an ace My partner always trumps Guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps Everything happens to me At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me That love would turn the trick to end despair But know I just can't fool this head that thinks for me I've mortgaged all my castles in the air I've telegraphed and phoned I send an "Airmail Special" too Your answer was "Goodbye" And there was even postage due I fell in love just once And then it had to be with you Everything happens to me
The voice vocally no comparison to Ella or Sarah but Billlie got to the heart and soul of the lyrics in a way they were not able to do. So much controlled emotion in her singing, she was in a class of her own, unique and the jazz musicians bacing her are superb.
No body could fuck with Billie holiday’s Harlem is real the heroine killed her ass and damn all these drugs even angel dust is killing every body Billie we still hustling hard 🎃
I came across this song about 15-20 years ago listening to a jazz program and I laughed at the lyrics--what a miserable person! I love it though--Billie could sing the Yellow Pages and make it sound unique--what a talent!
The testimonial in song to the vagaries and pains of life is certainly meant for Holiday. Everything happened to the poor girl, didn't it? But on the Continent, I see Piaf and Dietrich putting on Holiday's shoes. And you know what, they fit, don't they?
I like this song...I don't find it banal at all, I think it's supposed to be absurd, I think it's supposed to have a slightly morbid sense of doom to it. Too bad the ending is cut off.

That's real musicality and yes, the great ones are pioneers . Billie for me is an outstanding pioneer of Jazz Blues and music. Granted.
Every time I hear that voice, I feel like I'm about to burst into tears. I don't know what it is...
You're listening to a gifted individual, that's why.
The best heartfelt blues singer of all time!
Billie Holiday, God Bless her Soul 🙏 ❤️.
Some bold Clarinet playing in this 🙏

How great!! Did she marry?
Billie holiday is truely one of the best!
A sublime and wonderful woman that I wished I could have seen or met.
Arguably the very best jazz set ever, and with the great Lady Day!
WOW!
what do you mean by 'set'? this particular bunch of musicians on this particular day?
'One evening in the 70s on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood I caught the composer, Matt Dennis-music-Tom Adair-lyrics of this bittersweet ballad (1940) playing piano & singing his American songbook gold nugget 'An indelible evening to say the least
@@michaelchapman4955 Beverly Kenney singing this song for (not to) Hugh Hefner is also indelible...
Tanks Oscar
Thank you.
The first things i wondered a little into the song were 'was that a clarinet?' 'who was playing it?' and 'who was the piano player?'. Thank you.
Thanks for the info Oscar....excellent
i know it is quite off topic but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
This is divine
They are right there are days when I ask myself those same questions!

I love her voice
She was a beautiful woman!
Rich voice, much feeling. Lovely Lady gave many beautiful renditions and interpretations of songs that were always sung originally.

thank you for sharing her wonderful music, sharing to my Facebook.

What truly inspired lyrics and so beautifully sung by Lady Day with a lovely piano interlude
Love you Lady Day.
preciosa cancion
She is timeless

Jorge Edgardo. Esta mujer nos canta desde el Cielo
Inolvidable versión de la excelsa Lady Day,muy bien Scott en clarinete y Charlie Shavers en trompeta.Sublime.
Lovely..
Black cats creep across my path
Until I'm almost mad
I must have 'roused the devil's wrath
Cause all my luck is bad
I make a date for golf and you can bet your life it rains
I try to give a party and the guy upstairs complains
I guess I'll go through life
Just catchin' colds and missin' trains
Everything happens to me
I never miss a thing
I've had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace
My partner always trumps
Guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps
Everything happens to me
At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick to end despair
But know I just can't fool this head that thinks for me
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air
I've telegraphed and phoned
I send an "Airmail Special" too
Your answer was "Goodbye"
And there was even postage due
I fell in love just once
And then it had to be with you

Story of my life and this is the first time I've ever heard this skng.
Dang it!

No olvidar quienes soñaron esta exquisita melodía: Tom Adair musica, Matt Dennis letra.
EXCELLENT
The beautiful Billy. Everything did happen to her, but she was to out of it to feel it. This song was perfect for her. Love you Billy
Clearly she "felt" all her misfortunes. She was severely depressed and self medicating with drugs and alcohol
Holy Sh** I am in love.
Everything happens to me.
No body could fuck with Billie holiday’s Harlem is real the heroine killed her ass and damn all these drugs even angel dust is killing every body Billie we still hustling hard 🎃
Gosh, thanks for this. I forgot how wonderful it is. Anyone know who's in the band?

Il caldo paradiso in terra, musica dal cielo...
La forza di gravità trasforma perfino gli ammassi di... in stelle
"...and there was even postage due." Sums it up.
❤❤❤💜
per me è una tra le più belle conzoni di tutti i temi almeno fra le prime 14 canzoni
Cantata in modo eccellente
ciao
Non "fra le prime dieci", non "fra le prime quindici": "fra le prime QUATTORDICI" :- D Come mai 14?
Your answer was goodbye
And there was even postage due!
♥️🌹
supreme
America is singing.
Fools skip ... where angels fear to tread ... then cry out ... poor me
La struggente voce sembra scandire la sua vita, inimitabile unica artista "lady day" del jazz

I heard that she taught Sinatra how to sing. I believe it.
There are many that rode to fame, inspired by her. But she has no compare.

Damn it doesn't get much more
blue than this and it aint took no 12 bar format to do it

Ah, Ellie.
No, it is Tony Scott.
Anyone got charts for this or chet bakers version? Score or tab

it is kind of funny.
There is a chet baker version which is in my opinion the most beautiful one.
thank you for responding!@@raaf4678
who's in the band?
Aaaaa
Music lost a great influence in music when it lost Matt Dennis! For sure! Just listen to this song, and you at once see why.
Almost sounds like Benny Goodman on clarinet.
