Po_Bat clarified after editing that this was Canto 4. Honestly had I realized earlier my commentary would have been pretty different, but only in a comparative way for the other Canto themes so imo it's kind of a blessing in disguise having the lack of comparison so I looked at it as a standalone track. Still my favorite theme from LC so far

This is one of my favorite themes too!! It's been a year since Canto 4 came out and there's been so much more good music from this game, but yeah, the tone of the song always brings me back. The violin swell and the little details (the laughing kids, AOUGH) always gets me.
I love that your commentary so much! Your comments on the little details are spot on. The fact that you managed to pick up on the "i want to go back" energy too, which is on point, because the character this theme is written for literally embodies that mindset (she runs a terrorist group that aims to destroy modern technology to return to "better times". It's more meaningful in context.)
Since you're interested in more cinematic OSTs, maybe you can check out some of the story OSTs! They show up during the visual novel/story section of the game and expands the game's soundscape imo.
Some notable ones from Canto 4 (and my favourites): Reminiscence (the chapter's token ost, the violin swell is SO PRETTY), Dongbaek (first appearance of nostalgia lady), and Spring Story Theme, Summer Story Theme, Autumn Story Theme, We'd Lost Our Winter (each is its own track, in seperate parts of the canto, but it's relatively short (±40 seconds) and better listened as a set i think)
Alternatively, since we're already backtracking, Canto 3 is short enough to have 3 story soundtracks: Sinclair Story Theme 1 and 2, Sinclair Town Story Theme. They run longer than the previous ones (±2 mins), but is still very good! (Theme 2 is a personal fav :D) and is also interesting in context (this is the Canto with Between Two Worlds)

Honestly this song is probably responsible for one of the most beautiful and awe inducing moments in the game, excluding the ones that use Mili's works. God I love the themes of canto 4 so much.
Dongbaek's EGO theme is, if i'm remembering correctly, the 2nd time Studio EIM made a track for someone who realized and Effloresced their EGO, turning their mind and mental state into a honed weapon, armor, and at times, even creating it's own environment around themself (lovingly referred to a "domain expansion" and what you see in the background of the video) The character Dongbaek is incredibly weighed down by the past as you percieved, wanting to destroy the fruit that bore the sins that caused her found family to be shattered apart in a desperate attempt to close the wounds it caused. Studio EIM put their heart and soul into this track and made something absolutely worthy of the lore, as part of the whole mechanic in-lore regarding this state, EGO Efflorescence, is that it's the purest, deepest desire of the person, unrestricted by any bounds and for all to experience. You can see their will, feel their passion, smell the pungent scent of the Spicebush... and hear her emotions clear as day though her own theme

Do you want to know a fun fact about the theme?
Dongbaek (meaning "Camelia") is the both the name of the song (confirmed by the Studio EIM upload of the theme) and the boss you fight, who is a stand-in for Gim Yujeong, a real life poet and member of the "The Circle of Nine", a group of writers that lived during the japanese ocupation of Korea
that wasn't the fun fact... the fun fact is that this beautiful theme... belongs to the (in-game) founder and head of a terrorist organization called the "Technology Liberation Alliance"
and no, they aren't a weird cult that worships technology... as some other comment said, they basically want to retur to a time before technology... and while the terrorist organization as a whole thinks that this is to live a better life in purity... the real reason Dongbaek founded the organization was to push a big re-start button on tech development, erase everything... only to allow the next generations to create those technologies once again, from scratch, and to be able to harbor the wonder of discovery and creation
so... does this theme sounds like the leader of a terrorist organization to you?
@@NMC213 Well this Dongbaek isn't camellia - it's dialect for spicebush (생강나무).
@@LegenDUS2 It’s both. She is named after a story by Kim Yu-jeong, 동백꽃 (which is called Camellia flowers in English). It's essentially a play on words as both spicebush and camellia were used to be called dongbaek because they had a similar usage

@@gremlin-45 Dongbaek's Domain Expansion encompasses a 158 ft radius around the caster. When the barrier is sealed, countless spicebush plants will bloom around the victims and the barrier will take the appearance of a crystal clear sky. After approximately four seconds, the domain will become complete. Unlike others, Divine Blooming does not launch an up-front attack against the victim immediately. Instead, once Dongbaek inflicts a number of hits on the victim, they will be ensnared in a spicebush plant. Only then can the can't miss attack activate. This consists of Dongbaek raising her fan to release Culminating Fragrance, a massive shower of flower petals spanning the entire area of the domain. This attack will immediately exorcise any cursed spirits or sorcerors trapped in spicebush. As a result, it is advised not to attack Dongbaek carelessly as even a few small blows can trigger the can't miss attack, leading to your demise.
To summarize the story
this song is for a boss who's wish is to go back to before they had discovered all the technologies and to re-experience the time where they were simply creating to create before it was corrupted by more selfish desires. When her mentality was broken down fundamentally, her selfishness and pure will made her build herself back up, causing her to manifest E.G.O.
She's also a terrorist who's not shy of causing lots of civilian casualties, hiding her true goals from terrorist cell she created and using and tossing her own men for her own goal as they were nothing.

I've been waiting for this one! This track is indeed a boss theme, and my favorite, but is meant to come in as a bit of a surprise-- it's an interruption that overrides "Canto IV Battle Theme C1", which really highlights the emotional intensity. The moment accompanies a dramatic background change in-game, as well. You certainly nailed the big emotional themes in play, genuinely a heartbreaking fight.

This is a character's theme, her name is Dongbaek. She's a boss and this plays when she awakens to her E.G.O, which is themed on "getting rid of technology to go back to the natural state"
welllll, its actually the corrosion due to her ego equipment, not her own inherent ego. more focused on the idea of becoming obsessed with the thrill and joy of discovery, that tantalizing "what if". the nature of feeling something for the first time, untainted by the reality of what will eventually happen. thats what the EGO equipment/originating abnormality itself represents anyway.

@@StuHol-jb1hh Did I miss something about this being a corrosion as opposed to her personal E.G.O.? Literally every other person I've heard talk about it calls it "her" E.G.O. and the name during the fight includes "Effloresced E.G.O" as opposed to "Lobotomy E.G.O." which is used by other enemies and IDs based off of those enemies, including Sunshower. She also talks to "seemingly no one"(though from context we know who she is talking to) before the E.G.O. appears, suggesting that it could have become a distortion instead if she didn't have a strong enough will. I'm also unaware of any abnormality the E.G.O. would be based on.
@@StuHol-jb1hh It's not a corrosion, it is in fact her personal EGO. The EGO gear she was wearing is Drifting Fox's, Spicebush however is explicitly related to Donbaek's work "The Camellias" and her own character. It's very much an expression of her nostalgia and longing for the past

I love he pronounced the name as “Dung Beak”. Anyways the theme is supposed to give the sense of reminiscing about simpler times, but time is being cruel and separating friends. Dongbaek misses older days with her group, and is trying to force them to get back together, while also trying to drag down those who are trying to move on. Because of this she eventually manifests her own EGO called “Spicebush”, which traps people into a calm and serene prison of flowers.
A lot of the music in this chapter is somber and has hints of sadness because the entire chapter is an allegory and look into one of the main character’s depression.

Man, I'm always so impressed by how ON POINT your thoughts on the songs are! The feelings evoked by the song, that you described, are pretty much spot-on for what the boss's motives and feelings are.
Still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it. This is one of the most impactful moments in Limbus, and you perfectly analyzed everything the track does to evoke exactly that, down to the most minute details.

One of the reasons why this music is striking is that the intro starts with canto IV battle C1, this is because the singularity in the background goes crazy and draws the attention of our entire team, then dongbaek starts this music with a great cinematic, drawing all their attention. In general, the themes of limbus are as follows.

We should definitely go to Whitenight for Library of Ruina. You had to listen to Angela for that, and you did
You can go to Canto IV boss 2 without cooling down for limbus because it is connected, or let's take a look at Canto VI if you want, connected osts; Boss1 - Boss2 - Boss3- Boss4 (you heard this), Battle D and Battle F
A little detail on the song in game is that is the first turn or two of the fight it’s playing the same hard techno violence of the previous fight with this character, before she sweeps the background and music away and replaced it with the garden you see in the background, and this song kicks in
You’ve tensed up for a violent clash and then this song melts that feeling away
So glad you’re getting into some of the non-Mili tracks. Some of the Canto VI tracks are absolutely amazing for setting the stage on the reveal of powerful enemies
This is still my favourite theme in the entire game. It comes out of nowhere too. There are many amazing songs in Limbus but this is the one that I return to every once in a while just to listen in the background.
Ahh, yes, the Peak Cinema theme that genuinely made me cry. Man, makes me feel like she's the protagonist here.

I suggest you look at "Dungeon Battle Medley - Canto IV" Video by Admiral Crunch as a whole, the video is 30 min long because is a mix of 8 soundtrack from Canto 4 to form a medley from it. And is definitely cinematic like the one you have just heard. just to note if you want to react to the video i suggested, the first part of the video is actually the one you have just listen in this video, so you can either skip it or react to it again as a whole part of the medley. But if you think 30 min is to long for your video format, then i get it that you don't want to do a reaction to it. Oh and i think each soundtrack is loop atleast 2 time, so yea that's why is 30 min long.

Ah yes, one of the bgms that makes Canto IV so emotional. This time your guess was kind off, since this was actually a boss theme. Imagine hearing this while actually fighting your old friend who had different view of the thing you both passionate with, just to progress to fight another old friend with Mili song, Fly My Wings, in the end.

Base EGO is, for the most part, all you really need for a long time. If you have any friends, you may want to tag in a friend's support unit for an extra hand. Other than that, take a step backwards and rethink your team compisition. see if you can get some more Envy and Lust onto your team such that you can have Heathcliff's Bodysack ready at a moment's notice, even early in the fight. same with Sloth and Pride for Outis instead, To Pathos Mathos' 20 floor makes it one of the cheapest, most consistant EGO in the game. Another thing you could try is to go in with 1-2 less units than nessissary, as when you go in with a smaller party than the game expects, it will give a 2nd skill slot to your first few units in the selection menu, allowing you to attack with the units that ARE leveled more

I think she's highly relatable in her perhaps childish nostalgia for simpler, more innocent times. Before the world corrupted everything that is good.
But she is also selfless, while being completely selfish, about it. She doesn't want this world for herself, she's completely and utterly willing to wither away in the process of making it. Only so the next generation would get to experience the joy and wonder of discovering something wonderful for the very first time.
And maybe, as it goes unspoken in the game, but heavily, heavily implied...
... so that generation would have another chance to make things right, and keep their discovery from turning into what Dongbaek eventually rebelled against.
It's a good time to return to the OST of older Limbus chapters, we have at least 6 weeks of nostalgia before diving into the absolute hype of Canto VII

I think you should definitely listen to Canto VI - Boss 3, 4, and 5. All three are very pivotal turning points in the involved character's story, and I'd love to see if you'll guess what happens in there :)

Clocks have a lot of meaning in LCB
There are recurring themes of time with Dante who literally has a clock face and how a lot of characters are stuck in the past
So for Dongbaek it was that she can't stop time, its always ticking forward and she can't go back to that past that she wanted so dearly and because of that we are in conflict.
So if you ever hear a clock ticking in the songs, it usually means ties to those themes
Once again Catharsis basically explaining an entire character 100% accurately just from listening to their theme song
You should react to Canto V Boss 2 theme! Its an epic song for a fight that many players had problems with
How the hell does this man always get the plot for the ost so perfectly to the point that im not even sure if he actually doesn't know the story of the game

About the cinematic build up in Library of Ruina, you already heard one in Limbus that functioned like it. It is Between Two World, where Realm of Light builds up to Realm of Darkness.
Technically all of Mili’s songs work like that, it’s just that Fly My Wings, Compass, and Through Patches of Violet all have multiple steps as opposed to Between two Worlds which only had one big leap.

This is my favorite non vocal boss theme in the game, the whole meaning behind it is the character this belongs to, dongbaek, finally realizing and accepting that she enacted a whole terrorist group based on her masked nostalgia and yearning for her past with her ex-partners inventors.
She ends up just manifesting EGO and wanting to crush her old friend's career and planting the seeds of her past for future generations to find it and have the same wonder she had.
I just really love her discourse of "i'll bury it... deep in the sand... so others may discover it"

My favourite theme from LC that isn’t Mili. But the lack of vocals enhances the soulfulness in my opinion. Which, not that it would’ve been bad with vocals. But it just feels so evoking without them, so nostalgic, so harrowing, so beautiful. Tinted with the petrichor of regret, and the desire for hope. I really love this theme; and the writing association with the character associated with it.
