£330,000 in 1986 is ~£1,000,000 today. Harry Kane is paid £20,000,000 per annum in 2024, so top players today are earning ~20x more than Linekar and Shearer earned.

For those interested, according to the bank of England inflation calculator, Alan Shearer's 225 a week is 612.25 today, so he was earning 2,448.99 a month in today's money. Gary Lineker signed his first contract in 1978, so his 100 pounds a week equals 534.16; so he was earning 2,136.62 a month.

Rodri has papered over City's issues over the last couple of seasons. They have been able to do whatever they want ahead of him because he was so dominant, but without him, the lack of legs and aggression in midfield as well as the lack of pressing from Haaland has got them into this position. Even when Rodri comes back, he will take a while to get back into form, you never know the true recovery time from an ACL. Some players never recover. But, how can they recruit a top level DM when they know Rodri will come back at some point. They aren't going to play with two. There is also the question of Guardiola leaving in the near future and the 115. City are in a tricky spot.
They have Gundogan, Walker, De Bruyne, Ederson, Kovacic, Stones and Silva the wrong side of 30. Ake, Grealish and Akanji are 29. Realistically over the next 2 years they are going to need a new RB (if Rico Lewis doesn't play there), at least 1 CB, a new midfield and probably a winger and striker. Maybe even a new GK and a LB if Gvardiol moves into the centre. Unless they can find absolute gems, they're going to need to spend £400m easily. Can they do that with the PSR and 115? Interesting times from the outside.

with the aging of their important players & the improving title rivals teams like arsenal, Chelsea with young fresh players..... City need to think bout rebuild & imparting that winning mentality to new fresh young players while the old guards are still in the team to guide the new youngins

Gerrard can play Left Back or Right Wing at a premier league player. Noone else in any position can argue the way you can argue Gerrard. All around ability and consistency win any debate, Gerrards average performance can be measured out of position against top players performing at their best in their best positions.. Cancelo is probably the closest, but he'd be bad as centre back or as a striker, no attacking player is as good defensively as Gerrard, no defensive player is as good offensively as Gerrard. If Maldini is the perfect defender, R9 is the perfect striker, Gerrard is the perfect midfielder. Its Gerrard plus someone. If the someone is defensive (Veira eg), you play Gerrard in the 8, if the someone is offensive (Lampard eg), you play Gerrard as the 4, gg 👌

      @PegasusGrey75 2 місяці тому +1

@@TheDude3007-dd7fg Inaccuracies are one thing, omissions, selective data ranges and other factors undermine both arguments, City fans or otherwise.
Firstly, City have repeatedly bought and sold players within City Football Group, so net spend is offset by selling players to yourselves, a bit like Chelsea selling its hotel to itself. Selling a clearly Elite level player in Cole Palmer is also an irregularity in itself, yes, he wanted first team football, but this sale was only an event because City needed to appear compliant while they challenged the very rules that everyone signed up to in court, and because Chelsea's owner was available to buy anyone and everyone at inflated prices while manipulating amortisation himself.
Then we have the dubious financial chicanery of buying Savio through Troyes, knowing he'd never play for them, loaning him to Girona to further manipulate finances, and ultimately selling him to City for a sum significantly less than he was worth had anyone else bought him.
Angelino, Delph, Stevan Jovetic, Mangala, Jesus Navas, Lukas Nmecha, Nolito, Otamendi, Patrick Roberts, Ferran Torres, Bruno Zuculini and a couple more I can't recall of the top of my head could all, arguably, join that list of players that didn't cut it like Kalvin Phillips. The narrative of no bad signings is particularly misleading.
It's also interesting that an arbitrary cut off of ten years is used. These paid stories all began circulating around the time of the current investigation, it obviously doesn't include the full extent of spend from any of these clubs, nor do we know given various footballing authorities have found glaring omissions and irregularities within City's own submissions resulting in many of the 115 charges filed. Given these are charges, not allegations or accusations, it's safe to say that there's no way to assess the current financial submissions.
I'm an AIK fan, since we're clarifying loyalties on our comments these days. It's interesting to watch the narratives and tribal positions played out in England though, fans full of tribal bile and hate on a never-before-seen scale, everyone prioritising trolling rivals rather than objectively celebrating or criticising their own team, clubs engaged in posturing and buying sympathetic votes, the authorities seemingly stuck between losing all integrity and competition through a huge gulf in financial playing field like Spain, France or Germany while maintaining a so-called fair play system that still benefits those with the most success and money or those who have simply made a sponsorship up. Wolves and Palace both have a sponsor this year that's come out of nowhere in Asia, but the money in Asia appears to have a trail to the middle east. I wonder how they've been voting in EPL meetings? What correlation can be seen in that data? Saints had “LD Sports” as a sponsor for a few years. That was supposedly a Chinese sports network, but also came out of nowhere.
The moral is, as you say, don't let the facts get in the way of the story, but it's important when pointing out inaccuracies that you also identify the flaws in both sets of 'facts' and both uses of 'data'. I do hope that helps with some perspective and balance.
I note you've edited you post while I've typed. Can't see what's changed other than your assertion that you're not a City fan, but that's fine, the point regarding fandom remains the same for all fans.

After a few seasons rival coaches will know how to cancel out new inventions or tricks. Pep and Klopp held their top positions longer than expected, which gives them great cred. Vardy > Kane
Absolutely no conversation! The question was “who has had a better career”. Kane had to run off to a 1 team league to finally win something, and he even failed at that in his first year!

I'd have to go Vardy for the better "career".
But I suppose Lineker and Shearer are quite similar in terms of a high quality striker who didn't win as many trophies as they should have, but a fair amount of individual awards. So they probably don't rate someone's career the same way the rest of us would

    • @gusyonok9950

I think they dodged the question. Nobody is saying Vardy is a better player than Kane, but you could argue he's had a more successful career when you look at his winners' medals. Even if Kane does win the German,, that ranks way behind and English title, and probably even behind the FA Cup

@ I’m not even talking about their form. I mean all the stuff outside of the actual football. Gary & Alan had no problem calling out other injustices like the super league, Quatar WC, but haven’t taken a stance on the 115 charges, because they can’t discuss that stuff with Micah around. It’s a form of censorship & it’s taking away from the pod

I find it really interesting how Gerrard is always talked about as the best player. I understand he had all the attributes and was a complete footballer but he didn't deliver on the international stage whilst often being outclassed in midfield. Whether it was by Pirlo in 2012/2014, Ozil in 2010 or Modric in 2007. Not to mention his huge errors gifting goals against France in 2004 and Uruguay in 2014.
He was obviously an elite performer in the Premier League over a number of years but can he really be elevated above other elite performers who also won the league multiple times such as David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or even Frank Lampard?

@@andrewwright4195 Sure he had some good games but nothing to be called the best. Legs were gone in 2010 at the age of 30? I'm sure the other players did try just underperformed. A top manager didn't see him playing in the middle, preferring Barry and Lampard there to him. Potentially the same reason as what Rafa said on the Overlap about him lacking the tactical knowledge/discipline.
