Daniel works in an office that makes holograms, but his everyday routine existence is jolted when a new company moves into the office next door: The Illuminated Brotherhood of the All Seeing Eye. And then, one day on the way to work, he stumbles across a dying man who asks him to deliver a letter.
Though Daniel doesn't know who the dying man is or where the recipient lives, he decides to take on the task. The delivery takes him far afield, veering away from his workaday existence into a deeper mystery about his identity.
Directed and written by Sean McKenna, this surreal, propulsive short thriller is a wild ride through an existential conundrum, as its unsuspecting hero careens through distant corners of the earth to accomplish a task that's equal parts inscrutable, prosaic and oddly urgent. As Daniel tries to accomplish his task and make sense of the strange rabbit hole he's found himself in, he's brought deeper and deeper into a larger mystery.
The storytelling packs in an immense amount of complexity in its short run-time, which can feel disorienting. An arch, knowing voiceover, done by actor Kate Dickie, is a strong guide through the controlled chaos of the story, at first detailing Daniel's daily life, with amused, ironic humor at the absurdities of his life, from his hapless crush on a woman to the time he takes to pick out a work outfit when all his clothes look the same.
But that routine shifts when a dying man asks him to hand-deliver a letter. At first, Daniel doesn't abandon his routine, but something about the letter soon compels him to embark on a strange journey in search of the letter's recipient, "always seeking, never finding," according to the narrator. As Daniel, actor Taurean Steele is an effective everyman, confounded by the dilemma he's in but unable to stop. His efforts destroy his life, until he unlocks a puzzle. But instead of a resolution, it only reveals a more formidable force, one that may be futile to fight against.
Appealing to fans of filmmakers like Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze, DEAD WHISTLE STOP is like the mirrors in a funhouse, refracting moments again and again until they achieve the level of metaphor about the search for identity, meaning and sovereignty in an often chaotic, absurd world. The ending section of the film is wild and mystical, but it also represents Daniel's attempt to control his own story and be the master of his own journey and narrative. Though the manner of telling is surreal and helter-skelter, it should be relatable to anyone who has felt small against the unpredictability of the world acting upon them and has wanted to fight back against these unseen forces -- though the fight may be futile, especially against these immense and unknowable forces.
