Light art performance by Christopher Bauder & Akiko Haruna

TENSOR is a new outdoor art installation by German light artist Christopher Bauder and British musician and composer Akiko Haruna. The large-scale sculpture will be on display in the outdoor area of Dark Matter Berlin from sunset on 26 May to 3 Sept as part of SUMMERLIGHTS 2023. The piece is inspired by the mathematical term “tensor”, which describes an object that relates different vectors and scalars in a multidimensional space.
A three-dimensional cloud of 400 suspended lights floats above the audience, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light and movement. A musical score amplifies the light show, blending cinematic sound design, electronic music and powerful sonic landscapes. TENSOR is a poetic expression of technology, a way of transforming data into beauty. It challenges us to rethink our relationship with our surroundings, as well as with ourselves and others. It invites us to explore the possibilities of what light can do beyond illumination and music beyond being a song.
Visitors who encounter TENSOR will experience a sensory immersion in an abstract world of light and sound. The lights create endless variations of shapes and patterns, from abstract geometric forms to organic waves, while also responding to the environment and the audience’s presence. This has a profound impact on our emotions because it influences our perception through the change of light and darkness. Ultimately, light and darkness are fundamental elements of our existence, affecting our biological rhythms, our sense of time and space, our mood and well-being.
