Every time I visit a doctor’s office, the nurse/assistant is amazed that I am not on any prescriptions. I am “only” 56 so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but apparently most people our age are on prescribed drugs. I, like you Angie, control my cholesterol through diet and exercise. I take a few supplements, calcium for my bones, fish oil for my eyes, and a multivitamin. But nothing can replace eating right, daily exercise, and lots of sunscreen!

Thanks for the informative video! I’m 57, & have taken 1 scoop of the Vital Proteins collagen daily for 4 years. My hair would NEVER grow past my shoulders, but after I started the collagen, it’s down to my elbows! It works! 😁

I started taking the Vital protein collagen 2 years ago, wasn’t sure if it was doing anything for me, got out of my routine basically stopped it for about 6 months. I realized my joints started hurting more and I felt like my hair was so dry and damaged. So I restarted the collagen! I take the one that is sourced from grass-fed pasture raised bovine hides (probably why it is so expensive). It’s the powder form, 20oz container and I order it from Amazon for about 45.00. I feel like for me personally the collagen has helped. Hope this information is helpful for someone!

agree with you not based on my own experience here I'm going to go off of what my husband has told me how he's felt since he started taking the vital peptides collagen with bovine in it he has noticed a huge difference in his joints he was starting to get a lot of joint pain in his knees well he started taking the vital protein collagen and after just a few weeks he noticed a difference his joint pain was gone in his knees they weren't hurting anymore so I'm a true believer I'm sold so now I'm taking it not everyone is going to have the same results you have to give something to try you have to give it a fair try before you decide that it's not going to work for you along with a healthy diet and exercise I have learned that there's no miracle peel out there you have to do your part on eating good staying away from a lot of the bad food fast food places any you know all the junk that's out there that we're faced with every single day of our lives that's what you have to stay out of I had just recently gave up red meat I don't really eat that much red meat I try to stay away from it it's sometimes it's hard but I think it's a lot easier then say I give up chicken and turkey I can't give those things up I can't go vegan but I can give up red meat.

Collagen works for my mom also who is 83..I've witnessed the changes happened in my mom's health. Her arthritis gone. Her hair becomes thicker. Her skin becomes elastic. Her sleeping get improved. Thank God for this. Collagen is still good we have just to look for a pure one.

Hi Angie! I love your UA-cam videos! I started watching you before I turned 40, and now (several years later), I feel like my face has not aged because of your help! Would you mind doing a new/updated supplement routine video? Forgive me if there is a more recent one, but I haven't come across it. I'm just interested in how your supplement routine has changed. Thanks for always being honest and awesome!

I eagerly anticipate your 30(ish - no pressure!) day review after taking the marine collagen. I have taken a bovine collagen supplement for about 6 months and did not see or feel any difference in my skin, hair, nails, or joints. I've now discontinued it to see if I notice any difference from NOT taking it. Aye carumba.

Love your reviews Angie - also watched Dr. Dray - and totally respect her point of view - my personal experience- collagen consumption has strengthened my hair, skin and nails. I started consuming them because of my osteoporosis risk- and couldn’t make bone broth at the rate needed. When I slack off I can see it in my nails. So I totally believe that it’s beneficial.

I am a cartilage researcher (which is mostly composed of collagen). Just from understanding how collagen is produced in the body, I really do not think that collagen supplements work. The collagen supplement will just be broken down in the stomach and be equivalent to any other protein source. Think of it like each protein is a specific “word” but then the stomach breaks it down into individual “letters” so it doesn’t really matter what “words” you put in to begin with. Even if the collagen survived i don’t think that cells would be able to just add it to the tissue. Instead you want to take supplements that would promote the cells to make their own collagen. Taking a high vitamin c dose makes more sense to increase collagen production in my opinion, but who really knows. Science is very spotty when it comes to supplements...

    • @ShazWag
      @ShazWag 5 років тому +86

I agree. Thanks for this. The vitamin and mineral supplement industry is worth billions, and is mainly marketing. Before doing a medical degree, my daughter first did a Master's in Biochemistry and said exactly the same. If you don't live in a third-world country and have a healthy balanced diet, don't have a compromised immune system or other serious illness, or live in Scandinavia, you don't need any supplements. Unless you're vegan and therefore need B12, you're just producing expensive pee, because an excess is just passed out as waste. Moreover, an excess of some vitamins and minerals can be harmful. Too much vitamin D, for example, can cause hardening of the arteries and lead to a heart attack. An excess of some other vitamins can cause serious skin problems. In addition, haemochromatosis is far more common than many people seem to realise and is fatal with too much iron. As for many antioxidants, they're best consumed in their whole forms rather than as supplements and so-called "detox" drinks. We don't need to "detox" ourselves. This is marketing hype that gullible people buy into. Antioxidants will have dispersed once they reach the gut if taken in a processed form rather than in their whole, natural form. As for bovine gelatine and the like, there's still a risk of BSE. It's best to stick to a healthy, balanced and varied diet, take exercise, get plenty of sleep, and reduce stress - such as worrying too much about taking multiple vitamins. Intermittent fasting boosts cell regeneration more than pills and is also cheaper. Practising mindfulness meditation is also good for both the mind and body. Sometimes, less is more. 😉🧘🏻‍♀️🥦🍊🛌🏃🏻‍♀️✨ = 💊

I saw my brother in law (he’s 52)recently and noticed his skin looked amazing. He has chronic stomach issues, is a heavy smoker and drinker. I commented on how he looks really good. He was given marine collagen that he drinks, from a health food store. He doesn’t care less how he looks though :-).

Thank you. Please keep posting more of these. I believe in always eating right first. But supplements are important also. No matter how healthy you eat, you're not always going to get the extra supplements your body needs. I'm probably rambling right now. I'm barely awake right now. I just happened to see this before my second cup of coffee. I do now take supplements....but have questions about more that I would like to incorporate. Especially now that I'm now at 50 going through the, "M" word. That's it for now. I need more coffee. Love waking up to you though. You do a great job keeping us informed. I like my supplements and they include several of yours. I was advised by a previous PA I saw to take CoQ10, red yeast rice and fish oil to help with my cholesterol. After taking them faithfully for 6 months, I had blood work done and my cholesterol went from 230 to 149. I believe. I put my collagen peptides in my coffee every day. I also take Hair Volume - 1 tablet per day. I am beginning to see a huge amount of new hair growth - about 2 inches now. I will see how it is in another 6 months. I do not live near a Costco but find that Vitacost is a really good resource for anyone in the same predicament.

Hi Angie, Several years ago when I was diagnosed inherited high cholesterol (LDL) I did some research on how to bring it down naturally. I incorporated fish oil and Weider Red Yeast Rice Plus (the PLUS is phytosterols and stanols - the stuff in oatmeal and other plants). I also made some dietaryand exercise changes and with these measures my cholesterol was significantly reduced to an acceptable range. My dr was very impressed that I was able to do this naturally. BTW, I get the Weider product at Costco.

Supplements are great!!! There are lots of studies showing how effective various supplements are. There are few vitamins I have found that do not contain consistent data. The problem is there aren't 'that many' studies, however, results are pretty positive for the studies present (usually). There is so much I want to comment on this, I feel so bad I can't. You want to look for vitamins that are 3rd party varified and organic. 3rd party varified will ensure that your vitamins contain the correct amount. If your supplement isn't organic, you are taking toxins everyday too. The way I think of it is if someone came up and asked 'would you like to take this supplement everyday to get cancer?' If no, do not buy supplements that are not organic. COQ10 is amazing and has a lot of scientific data to back up the benefits! You can't obtain it in high enough quantities from food so it is best to obtain it through supplemental form. It lowers inflammation, takes away headaches and migraines, increases blood circulation (thus oxygen to your brain, organs, body tissues), and more. The supplements that have a lot of data.. that I can think of off the top of my head are magnesium, iron, vitamin C, omega 3's, COQ10, probiotics, and a few others. Omega 3 you will want to take that in a liquid formula, it is so much better for you. For collagen supplements - what you want to be careful of is glutamic acid. I bought the marine collagen from z!nt. They were the lowest I could find in glutamic acid. The detrimental effects of glutamic acid are to much to place in here. My tinnitus actually flares when I eat foods high in glutamic acid or MSG. Tinnitus is theorised to be caused by glutamate (an offset in the ratio between gaba and glutamate - this is one of the reasons why ginkgo works). In supplemental form glutamate is harmful - wheras naturally found in foods IS debatable. It is also debatable who is susceptible to nuerotoxicity from higher levels of glutamate. Collagen supplements I believe are good for your health (minus the glutamic acid part). Regardless of whether they are increasing collagen in your skin, they are providing you with important amino acids such as L-arginine (good for heart health), glycine, lysine, and proline. A really neat supplement I found out about for hair, nails, and skin health is sea buckthorn because it contains omega 7 along with various anti-oxidants. Omega 7 is a rare form. The tincture is what you would want to buy to obtain the most benefit. I could go on and on about supplements. I wish I could talk to you about supplements because I have done so much research and they are just life changing if you find the correct ones. I had a lot of negative symptoms from taking my ADHD medication for school (i'm in uni and do not have a choice). I was amazed by how essentially all of my symptoms disappeared from using different vitamins. Some of the symptoms I had were hair thinning, weak muscles, dry skin, anxiety, headaches, insomnia, etc. I eat very healthy - at the time I was actually eating a ton of kale and unaware of the high oxalate content. I bought vitamins and my symptoms started disappearing. Vitamins 100% work and I will forever tell people about them because of what I went through. The ones I found the most beneficial for me were ginkgo, COQ10, magnesium, omega 3, B vitamins, NAC, L-tyrosene, L-theanine, and iron. There are still many other ones I take that are also beneficial. However, those had the largest impact.

For your eyes, to reduce macular degeneration, it's very important to take taurine daily.
High levels of taurine are present in the anterior part of the eye. Taurine may prevent the development of cataract and dry eye through its osmoregulatory action. Taurine dietary intake is therefore a major factor in eye health.

I've been taking the Vital Proteins once or twice a day for about 4 months and the biggest benefit has been a substantial reduction in joint pain. So much so that I no longer need to wear my orthotics for Plantar fasciitis! Before taking the collagen supplement, my feet and ankles would ache so badly after only about 20 minutes of walking I could barely stand. This has been a miracle product for me and I'll never stop taking it. I buy it at Costco which is definitely less expensive than Whole Foods. I should add that I don't see a huge difference in my skin, hair and nails but I'm okay with that.

Hello Angie. About the fish oils...You have to pay attention to EPA and DHA level in it. If there is none of this on the label-I won’t buy it. Waist of money. And I also buy it in the refrigerator section at my Kroger store. You have to keep it in refrigerator. Just my 2 cents;)

I took pill-form collagen. I went through two bottles of "You Theory" Collagen from Costco. They are giant horse pills that are hard to swallow and you are supposed to take 6 of them. So I chocked them down for about a year. I also take other supps for hair and nails. I was not impressed with the results. Like you, I feel like both hair and nails grew faster but not stronger or thicker. My nails are still paper thin. My aging hair and "bald spot" showed no improvement . It wasn't worth it to me to have to take 6 horse pills a day when my other supplements are doing as good a job.

Great video as always! I am 57 and take a multivitamin, and then some supplements as well. I’m going to get the one you have recommended for joint health as my right knee has started talking to me when I walk up and down my stairs! Now, I’ve also taken in the past various biotin type supplements for hair/skin/nails with really no noticeable results. Then, your fellow ‘Tuber, Tati, released her Halo supplement last year, and after researching it, I gave in and bought it. I’m now on my 4th bottle. I have NEVER, ever, been able to grow my own strong nails. And now I finally have beautiful nails. My hair has never looked healthier, but my skin? Oh wow. Never looked better!! I used to get the occasional pimple or two, and have not had any in over three months. My skin is really smooth, too. So whatever is in that pretty pink bottle, I’ll keep taking it. Thanks for all you do!

A friend of mine also has a genetic high cholesterol (even though she is a triathlete and very skinny) her doctor told her to give up peanuts. Her cholesterol did come down. What I don’t know is if it worked because she has a hidden food sensitivity or if she was getting too much omega 6, for some people they are a problem. Maybe it’s a hidden allergy or sensitivity that contributes to your cholesterol.

I actually did it hoping it could help with my acne and scarring. I didn’t see any difference in anything, skin, joints, healing time, etc. And I really had a hard time taking it because I don’t drink tea or coffee so I’d mix it in orange juice to improve absorption but then I had the extra calories and sugar from juice. And I could taste it in the juice. It was chunky and gluey and gross. So I gave up after I finished the container of it. I’ll be curious what you think.

I use Great Lakes Collagen Hydrosalate which is about $20 and lasts a long time. I'm not convinced marine collagen is any better than bovine and it is way cheaper. As for the PreserVision, I work in an Eye Care clinic and the doctors recommend that all the time. The formulation has been studied and does delay macular degeneration. Eating your leafy greens helps too. And fish oil is often recommended for dry eye too. I need to try the Move Free Advanced and see if it helps. I like that it has vitamin D as well.

Also, unfortunately, I trust Dr Oz about as far as I can throw him. I'll have to do my own research on phytoceramides.

I have been wearing dark sunglasses outside since my late teens early 20’s. Outside, in the car and even when it’s shady. My eye dr said my eyes are that of a 20 year old! My mom wore sunnies but not religiously. She has macular degeneration. Eye dr said prolonged exp to the sun with rare or no eye shade is crucial to MD forming. Esp here in Colorado! My elevation here is about 6590 ft asl.

I too am experimenting with collagen. I am doing 2 servings a day for a month to load up and then will go to one serving. I am using Ancient Nutrition brand because it has multiple sources of collagen, which is suppose to work the best. There are some great videos by Dr Josh Axe and Dr Jordan Ruben on UA-cam, that addresses all the benefits. I’m hopeful...

I've been taking collagen, resveratrol, D³, phytoceramides, etc for years and I have no idea whether they are working. Lol. But blood test results show improvement. Possibly due to a keto diet.

This was very interesting Angie. I've always thought that too...who knows if it works. I'm thinking everything you put in your body and topically too has resulted in your beautiful youthful looking skin. Probably the best skin on you tube for a 56 year old!!!! Btw you do not look your age at all 😙

I love this video, but keep in mind that your liver has to filter all of these supplements everyday.

Hi Erin. Can you explain more? Are the supplements toxic?

With a normal dosing and regular renal and liver profile tests to monitor any changes, it should be fine :)

Angie, thank you for another great video. I too suffer from dry eyes and found a specialist to go see. Apparently the oil ducts that lubricate my eyes are blocked. It turns out that the 3 big things that cause blockage and dry eyes are waterproof mascara, tight lining, and using Retin-A on eyelids and under the eyes. ☹️ I am in the middle of a 3 week treatment cycle and I’m hoping this gets things back to normal.

Vital Protein is a great brand, more expensive than the others, I use the beef one!
