I just watched Over the Moon on Netflix and was really interested in knowing the origins of the story! This was very helpful for me thank you soooo much
The version which I knew was: 1. Hou Yi was a Man, not a immortal. He came out to shoot the Suns. One immortal stopped him so that the earth would not be a cold desolate place. 2. Hou Yi being a hero of the people become a King. He than took Chang'e as his Queen. However, he became a Tyrant. But being a Man, he wanted immortality so he began his search for the pills of immortality. 3. Hou Yu was successful in find the pills or elixir. But seeing that he is a Tyrant, Chang'e stole the elixir and took all of it so that the people would no have to suffer under Hou yi forever. With all the elixir she took. Chang'e floated into the Moon. Well that is the story that I knew about Hou Yi and Chang'e. As for the Rabbit, it is another story. An immortal came down to earth to see which animals had the qualities to be inducted into halls of immortals. So he appeared in front of 3 animals, a Fox, Monkey and Rabbit. He appeared in front of these 3 animals in disguised of a frail old man, and he ask if the animals could feed him. So the Fox hunted some small animals, the Monkey picked some fruits. But the rabbit just stood there. Depressed that him (the rabbit), asked the old man to start a fire. When the fire started, the rabbit sacrificed itself and jumped into the fire. Seeing the rabbit's self sacrifice, the immortal brought it up to the heavens. And later placed it on the moon to keep Chang'e company.
The version I knew was one where Hou You, after killing the suns and the monsters that appeared, became a well-loved figure who also teaches archery. He met and wed Chang'e. Later, he realized he's getting older and decided to seek for the pills of immortality. One of his disciple, however, was jealous and when he heard about the pills, he planned on stealing them. Chang'e was at home when the disciple showed up, so she ran and gulped down the pills, making her immortal and floated to the moon. Hou Yi looked for his wife, but he got killed by said disciple, but the disciple later got killed by the other disciples out of revenge. Hou Yi later was revered as some kind of god.
I learnt a different version. One that fits Houyi's character more. 1. Normally the 10 suns rotated. One day they got drunk and decided to all come out at once. Houyi was the king and he was an archer. The people called to him, asking him to shoot the suns. He shot down 9 suns. The last one pleaded for mercy. He said that he would never go off schedule. Houyi spared him. 2. He married Chang'e, but one day, Chang'e thought, "One day, both of us will die." so she went to Houyi and asked him to find the pills of immortality. Houyi obliged 3. After some time, he found the pills. He was told that he and Chang'e were to split it to become immortal. 4. Houyi brought them home and decided to eat them the next morning. During the night, Chang'e thought, "if half a pill makes someone immortal, what happens if I eat the entire thing?" Her curiosity consumed her. She snuck into the kitchen and ate the Pill. She began to get lighter, and lighter. She started to float. Houyi heard all of this, and could only watch as his wife floated higher and higher. 5. Eventually, Chang'e reached the moon. For all of eternity, she's trying to reach Houyi, long after he died.
From what I can remember, the version I read as a kid was that in the beginning, there were 10 mischievous Suns of the Sky Emperor. Hou Yi and his wife lived in the jungle, he was a skilled hunter and could hit a small leaf with an arrow shot miles away. The 10 suns came down to Earth and caused people to suffer from the burning heat and the Hou Yi saw the suffering and death. He himself was tough and strong enough to withstand the heat, so he climbed into the highest tree and shot down 9 of the suns leaving the last one. Instantly he became a hero to the people and was asked to be their ruler and protector. Hou Yi moved out from the jungle and lived in the town. People praised him and he even trained disciples and students to protect the town. Hou Yi became quite arrogant from all the praise and his top student became envious of Hou Yi's fame and perfect life. The student told Hou Yi that his wife might be looking at other men with interest and this made Hou Yi very angry and depressed, his student also played on Hou Yi's arrogance saying that it has been a while since Hou Yi has done anything great. The student told Hou Yi that he heard of a legend that one of the sky Gods while drunk dropped a wine gourd containing the elixir of immortality (the some type the monkey king drank) into a mountain full of dangerous creatures and beasts. He cunningly said that the area was so dangerous that he doubted Hou Yi could even get it. When Hou Yi heard this he arrogantly told the student to tell him where the elixir was located so that he can get it. Hou Yi was hoping to get the elixir to impress his wife and they can both drink it and be together forever. The student told Hou Yi, hoping that while Hou Yi was depressed and out of training that he would get killed, so that he (the student) can take over his place and marry Hou Yi's wife. Hou Yi even though depressed and out of training accomplished his mission and this infuriated the student. Hou Yi hid the wine gourd containing the elixir of immortality and marked it with a label with the inscription "poison" so that if it was found, people will not drink it. His student was angry and told Hou Yi that while he was away, his wife cheated on him. Hou Yi was very angry and confronted his wife, she was innocent and denied the accusations but Hou Yi still believed his top student's claims and forced her to tears. When Hou Yi left in anger, the wife was so upset she was going to leave Hou Yi and while packing she found the a wine gourd with the label "poison", in her anger and sorrow she drank it, hoping that she would die, but it turned out that she drank the elixir of immortality and floated up into the sky. She still missed her husband so she grabbed on a tree on the moon and she stopped floating to the heavens. She was stuck on the tree, so that she could at least watch over Hou Yi even though she could not be with him. When Hou Yi returned and found that his wife was gone and the wine gourd empty, he knew what had happened. He was so upset because he can no longer see his wife again and fell into depression. Now his student was the only person he trusts. The student saw Hou Yi in depression and told him the truth that he made up the whole story about his wife being unfaithful. He did this hoping that Hou Yi would be so depressed that he would kill himself. Hou Yi in his rage, tore up his own robes and ran naked back to the jungle where his used to live. One of the sky Gods (I think a female one) saw what had happened and told Hou Yi that he can still see his wife as she is trapped on the moon. Hou Yi looked out at the moon and saw his wife sitting under the tree. He asked the Goddess if she can do something so that they can be together. The Goddess refused as she said Hou Yi treated his wife with such injustice that she cannot help him. Hou Yi will have to live the rest of his life in regret as consequence for his actions. So Hou Yi asked the Goddess for a favor. He called a white rabbit from the forest and asked the Goddess to bring the rabbit to his wife as an apology for how he treated her and to keep her company. The Goddess granted his wish and made the rabbit immortal and brought it to his wife. Hou Yi continued to live in the forest by himself for the rest of his life and every night he would look at the moon and see his wife and the rabbit. This version could make a brilliant movie.

The ten suns where crows with four feet and the children of the goddess of the sun. According to other stories her husband was rewarded with the elixir of immortality and would not drink it and decided to wait until both them were immortal, one day while he was out , burglars heard of the exilir and wanted it to themselves , refusing to give it up she drank the whole bottle and ascended and made the moon as her Adobe with her rabbit, and realizing Chang'e ascended , every full moon her husband would set up an altar with her favorite treats in honor of her. While another story said she stole it from her husband and in a rage pursued her and she changed into a frog
this is my favorite legend! there are other versions though; some more similar to this one but I like the version where Hou Yi becomes a tyrannical leader and Chang'e decides to drink the elixir so that the poor people do not have to suffer under an eternity under his rule. I love the Mid-Autumn's Festival, where we worship Chang'e~ More reasons why partying is so much fun as an Asian, and more specifically for me, as a mostly Chinese, and Japanese American
My favourite version is that the couple have the elixir, but it can only work for 1 of them, so they decided that they will stay as mortals together. Now, Hou-yi has a student whose know about the potion and want it for himself, so he trick Hou-yi into believing that his wife is in danger in the forest. While Hou-yi run to save his wife, the student search for the bottle of immortality elixir in his teacher house, but Chang'e was at home and she get to the potion first. She then drink it so that it won't fall into the wrong hand, and suddenly she become a goddess once more. Her husband return and learn what has happened, the student was punish for his crime and while, Chang'e was stuck on the heaven she stay on the moon so she could be closer to her love, every now and then Hou-yi would make mooncakes in honor of his wife.
I walked to work at 2:30am this morning broken hearted and I looked up at the crescent moon in the sky and then before me on the road was a white rabbit with big long ears. I swore it must have been a house pet, I didn’t try to touch it or anything I just stopped and stared for a moment and then kept walking. Then after work while mindlessly scrolling on Facebook I saw a post about the Chinese moon goddess and her white rabbit so I looked up a video on UA-cam and this was the first one I found. Thank you.
I love this story. I liked the one where Hou Yi had a jealous desciple that tricked him. that version of Hou Yi is more realistic, and after he shot down the 9 Suns, he became a hero amongst mortals with the skills he possessed, leading to too much praise which got his ego up, and he began drinking and indulging in life, this was a weakness that his jealous student used against him in the end, that lead to the events that caused Chang'e to go up to the moon (the Kunlun mountain part is in there as well, where he obtained the elixir of immortality). check that version out, I feel it's more deep.
Im also Chang E main in MLBB, I also heard of Chang E outside MLBB since Chang E is also present in Touhou Project Edit: Yeah Chang E had no design yet but she only appeared only in silhouette in the Manga, Silent Sinners in Blue and she was mentioned by Junko in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom...
I liked the version where he shot down the suns and became King but forced Chang'e to be Queen 'cause of her beauty and she ate the immortality pill and escaped to the heavens. The version told by the TVB The Monkey King :p
The rabbit, who occupies 4th place just behind the tiger’s long striped tail, is a very auspicious sign, and that’s why the dragon, the only mythical creature, followed right after the lucky rabbit
This isn't the version i grew up with but it's nice. I heard the version of where Hou Yi gets the elixir and goes out to hunt but then bandits came to the house to steal it and in her fear Chang'e failed to hide it and drank it all in a last digit attempt
I love these videos about Chinese legends and stories, I remember watching a Chinese drama as a kid about some guy who shot down suns with his arrows but couldn't remember what it was about and now I know ^^
Exactly how I heard it in class but the thing that made Chang’e float to the sky was the pill of immortality but I also like this version the best because of the unrealistic and the version I heard was that no one knows if Chang’e ate it on purpose or was it by accident
Ah I don't like this version it's sad. The one I learned was that the suns would come out individually everyday, until one day Houyi decided to destroy all but one sun. So then, he and his wife Chenghe were honored with high ranks as emperor and empress or something like that it's been a while lol. But then, Houyi got power hungry, and turned evil, and looked for that vile of eternal life, but Chenghe, knowing he was up to no good, found it first and drank it and became the moon, to watch over Chenghe and of course the rest of humanity forever.. Or something like that, so pretty much Chenghe was a hero, and Houyi just went a bit crazy at the end.
I don't know why she would cry, like she knew what would happen and did it anyway! I feel like to her, power was more important to her than the love of her husband. Still an awesome story!~
Any about mountains/ nature, I really like those ones in Greek Mythology, like the milky way, I saw in another one of your videos, I find those interesting.
During the apollo 11 mission: Houston: Among the large headlines concerning Apollo this morning, is one asking that you watch for a lovely girl with a big rabbit. An ancient legend says a beautiful Chinese girl called Chang-O has been living there for 4,000 years. It seems she was banished to the Moon because she stole the pill of immortality from her husband. You might also look for her companion, a large Chinese rabbit, who is easy to spot since he is always standing on his hind feet in the shade of a cinnamon tree. The name of the rabbit is not reported. Michael Collins: Okay. We'll keep a close eye out for the bunny girl.
The way that I learned it was that there were 10 suns that took turns coming into the sky, but one day they rebelled and flew out all at once (they were 3 legged crows for some reason). Hou Yi was about to shoot all of them, but ChangHe took one of the arrows out of the quiver and hid it before he could grab it. They were banished and lived in a palace Hou Yi built. Hou Yi didn't want to die so he went to get the pill of immortality. He brought it home and hid it from his wife. One day while he was out, ChangHe found it and heard him coming. She quickly put it in her mouth and accidentally swallowed it. Because the pill was meant for two people only when they were prepared, she grew weightless and drifted away to the moon because it was too much for her. Later, Hou Yi built a house on the last remaining sun and it is said that when the sun and the moon shine the brightest that they are both trying to reach each other.
Well I was at this bar - night club after being laid off from my job & this woman w/ a white rabbit on her forearm, offered me a beer or pity beer & noticed this white rabbit on her arm... I wasn't gonna dwell on the subject of the rabbit but after several... a pitcher... anyway she took me to her place in NW DC & offered me to sleep it off since I was in no condition to drive. As the morning sun rose I decided to take a taxi only to find another woman already in the taxi with the white rabbit on her upper arm - similar but not identical rabbits..I asked her did she know "her name" she frozed & looked at me replied emphatically, "What?!? Oh Gawd Another Neo Matrix Weirdo! Like Leave Me Alone...Sir!" I got another taxi, good idea. Again, I wasn't in any condition to be driving (I'm responsible adult since I'm editing on the fly here) & have told you this story with Crystal Clear StansField Turner Photographic Like Memory recall.
I kinda prefer when Dan is presenting with Mike. Mia is very sweet and pretty, but she giggles a bit too much and I just find the two guys to have better chemistry.

Chang'e - "Nuh uh!"
it's really cool how they made a movie from this story.
Dan is everything

During the apollo 11 mission:
Houston: Among the large headlines concerning Apollo this morning, is one asking that you watch for a lovely girl with a big rabbit.
Dan is hilarious hahah xD
this was 6 years ago... but watch the over the moon on Netflix.... that is chang'e story
LOL i love Mia's shirt
Chang'e is my favourite
I was learning that in my school Straits
I kinda prefer when Dan is presenting with Mike. Mia is very sweet and pretty, but she giggles a bit too much and I just find the two guys to have better chemistry.
