    Great video as I fish all along this canal from Pendeford to Penkridge and have never experienced the view from a canal boat, thanks for sharing. It’s a beautiful canal from Spring time to Autumn and full of great colourful characters that add to its charm.

      Thanks Len, it's always good to slow down for a friendly fisherman, and yes it's a lovely stretch of canal. I hope you didn't take offence at my rant about your local Morrisons in "Getting Soppy About The Shroppie..."

      Tales From The Swan's Neck No offence taken over Morrison’s and thanks for explaining how Coven’s name came into being, never knew that. I think I’ve managed to talk the better half into going on a canal holiday for a change and it’s videos like yours that have sparked the interest in giving it a go, Jesus I was a punk rocker now I’m bloody turning into an extra from the last of the summer wine 🤔😊

    Hi Andrew, Nearly caught up, binge watching from your first vlog. It is evident that you are very skilled at photography, having taught the subject for so long. I love the extra stories both ancient and modern and your sense of humour. Keep up the good work; I appreciate your time, effort and research....looking forward to following future adventures. Hope to see you on the cut.
    Just one suggestion, which I learned from bitter experience as a teenager. When you are dropping a paddle, simply hold up the safety catch so you can drop it quickly if anything goes wrong. I made the mistake of swinging it right over as you do, it was a wet day, my hand slipped off the windlass, which swung round and hit one of my front teeth, chipping it badly. My dentist ground my tooth down to level it and then ground the other to match (it was the 70s). It wasn’t until my 30s that I invested in veneers, which have just been replaced.... a couple of grand later.... expensive mistake. Just a suggestion 🦷 😎

      Hello, Andrew, thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply.....I did notice on a subsequent vlog that you followed my suggestion and held the lock safety catch in case of emergencies rather than flipping it over. I am currently watching your lockdown diaries.....I actually laughed out load a couple of times, especially at your thoughts on toilet roll hoarding. We should be on our boat, and were there preparing it for the summer, but when the lockdown was announced, we scuttled off home. Hopefully soon we will be chugging off into the wild blue yonder. Hope to see you on the cut sometime. Stay safe 😉

    Thank you, the first part of your vlog with you in the Winter's mist gave me an idea for a screenplay. The part about checking the paddles on locks before use, worth remembering.

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  4 роки тому

      Hey that's brilliant, I like to be the source of inspiration. I'm also intrigued, but know better than to ask what the idea is. Oh...and as a bit of a plug, my son is an actor if you're ever in a position where you need (or can recommend) anyone.

    • @chilesauce7248
      @chilesauce7248 4 роки тому

      @@talesfromtheswansneck I hope your son's acting aspirations and dreams come true, my experience is its a fickle business and right face right time is a lot to do with it. I would be more than happy to write a character with your son in mind or even based on him, good character is the crux of the story. My spark of inspiration from your winter voyage is for a horror/thriller, that is all I will reveal publicly for obvious reasons. I am currently doing an edit/rewrite of a Horror/thriller screenplay (my first), once finished I will commence work on another from my extensive list of concepts. Your boat vlog I enjoy very much and find very informative, top job!

    The Hatherton canal was not the last to be built in Britain - I can think of at least two - the New Junction, and the Manchester Ship Canal.

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  5 років тому +2

      I would argue that the Manchester Ship Canal is an inland waterway rather than a canal or navigation for narrowboats. However I concede that my research was wrong and The New Junction was later. Well spotted

      Hi Jules, yes it is very daunting at first. It's a bit like driving a car for the first time on your own, but you soon get used to it. I'll probably be doing a vlog in September about tackling locks. Take your time, don't be rushed, check all paddles are closed when you go in, and stay forward of the cill marker. Keep an eye on your boat at all times. It isn't as bad as it sounds.

    Hi Skip, nice vlog as usual but who are the Lock Fairies, where do they live and do they know what you call them? When I was a paramedic we called the Fire Brigade “water fairies” and they were not best pleased! Anyway to make up for The Saints defeat at Anfield they redeemed themselves today! The Saints are marching to safety. I think! Oh by the by is heavy rainfall posing any problems?

      Ah Admiral, on topic as usual. I have CRT volunteers referred to as 'lock fairies' due to their magical appearances in unlikely places to help you through a lock. And no, I suspect they don't much like the term, but hey-ho... As for rainfall and wind, watch this space
