    I went to 1920s - 40s company xmas party last year. I sported dark trousers, white shirt with a neck tie, brown waistcoat and a fedora hat. All that topped off with a proper pencil mustache.
    I know it's not ideal, but still better than half of the clowns in over or undersized rental clothes and the other half who did not even try and wore contemporary casual (read sloppy) clothing. 😂

    I would be utterly delighted to see a video from you on making a late 1910s/early 1920s 'Jazz suit'! Young men in America adored the extremity of the proportions/cut (and so do I, hehe)!

    Honestly I just came across this and your other vid bc I'm going to a 20s party and needed some intel for clothes, but I love haberdashery content that clearly has a lot of love+interest+knowledge behind it and that's clearly you (and your look is 💯💯💯) so I subbed

    My go-to 20's/30's outfit is somewhat of a cross between bootlegger and jazz junkie. I either wear Oxford bags or a pair of triple-pleat trousers, along with matching waistcoat and jacket, spear-point shirt and vintage black-and-gold necktie. Topping it off is an old brown Dobbs Fifth Avenue hat.

    I wondered what country you were in. I'm going to a roaring 20's theme party. That an American style.
    This stuff I'm watching looks like weekend at Downton Abbey.
    In the 1920's color, yes the American spelling, entered fashion.

      I was just looking at another site where they showed women's fashion of the 1920s, and I thought the same thing. There are some great examples of what they wore in the '20s, and what was considered dressy or casual.

    It was a faux pas to wear a hat indoors in the 1920s, and it's even more of one now. When I see someone with a hat on in a closed room, I know for sure they're a fool, a poseur, or in the case of a politician in a cowboy hat, both.

    Love this! As someone from the black country, I usually stay away from the peaky blinders dress, as it has negative connotations here due to the modern ne'er-do-wells dressing like them for some reason

  • @imperialesoberkommando

    I was at a 20s themed party at the student club just a couple days ago and it is funny and sad at the same time how accurate you described how the most people attending such a party dress there. Pre tied bow ties, clip on braces, skinny jeans, visible belts and shirts under waistcoats, belts combined with suspenders, hats and caps inside and who would even think about putting any effort styling their modern cut hair to get at least a little closer to the 20s hair styles and the imo by far worst thing: the sneakers, hiking shoes, modern winter boots and whatever else awful shoes you can think of. I already set my expectations really low that evening considering I can not expect that much from students of a STEM university fashionwise and I myself was far from perfect in my modern cut rather skinny shawl lapel dinner suit without any waist covering and cap toe oxfords where the heaviest enthuiasts would probably be bothered by the cap toe but I was still disappointed how low the effort was the men made.
    And I would not even be that bothered by the more peasant looks with the caps inside, the clip on braces without jackets and waistcoats and so on since we students are somewhat like peasants in general but the shoes completely ruin everything for me. The girls were not that much better, a couple ones had decent dresses and hair styles but still many bad shoe choices. The DJ also was quite mediocre, many too modern foxtrot/quickstep tact titles many remixes a few swing titles and completely off topic titles.
    All in all I should probably not have had any expectations at all but I guess rather than being discouraged to do it somewhat properly we should feel even more encouraged to dress as accurate as possible and make a difference.

    Could you wear a turtleneck and overcoat for a 1920s day event? ... Recently watched Brideshead Revisited again and saw the Jeremy Irons character, Charles Ryder, wearing this combination. How accurate is it? 🤔

    • @Vintagebursche
      @Vintagebursche  6 місяців тому +1

      As far as I know the turtleneck is rooted in the navy and civil sailors making its way to dock and factory workers. I don't know the movie you are referring to, but I wouldn't wearing with a suit before 1950. It was made popular in combination with a suit during the 1960s and later on by leftist intellectuals.

    Would a cummerbund in the early 20th century style (which is to say, a long sash that isn’t necessarily black/maroon and is perhaps patterned) acceptable to wear to a 1920s party or would it be too out of date?

    • @Vintagebursche
      @Vintagebursche  8 місяців тому +1

      Depends on the event imho. Not every party in the 1920s had a strict dresscode and for a party of artists and other creative people that would have been absolutely fitting.

    Bit more complicated, the rules about hats in the 1920s. For instance, in lower-end speakeasies men often kept their hats on.
