    The best way to describe the music roll for a player piano is that it was the first time you could go to a shop and look through all the different songs and buy your favourite song and take it home and play it long before vinyl records or cassette tapes or CDs

    Gershwin learned to play piano by putting his fingers over the player piano his father had bought to Ira. Later George went to write arrangements for player pianos. (the information is from the liner notes of a recording of George Gershwin piano rolls arrangements - played on an Yamaha piano)

    What novel technology. I love how they've updated old tech to meet new demands. Great explanation and loved the music clips.

    Can you adjust the tempo? Play it slower or for an alto vs a tenor?

    QRS once had a feature where a computer screen or tablet could be placed on the music desk and the lyrics could be seen for sing-along. Is that still available?

    Some corrections… 1. early player pianos worked with foot pumping vacuum AIR - not electricity, and 2. The early players music are called “rolls” not scrolls.

    Brilliant !! thank you for the infos this is exactly what I was looking for ! funny side note, I love how pianos can play themselves perfectly in today's world, but how is it that they still can't tune themselves ? :D))) I think that would be the DREAM far more than just recording and self playing, but to own a piano that is tuned everyday to perfection which would also be so much healthier for the sound board as well ^^

    Imagine audiophiles paying 20k for high end speakers and equipment to listen to classical piano music, with the most realism.
    When they can buy an acoustic piano to play itself. I mean if all they listen to is piano music only.

    • @slofty
      @slofty 2 роки тому +1

      People need to understand that the goal of playback equipment isn't to recreate sound in situ the same way that paint upon canvas wasn't PRIMARILY - yes, photo-realism is a _small facet_ of visual art - meant to perfectly mimic the actuality of a scene visually. How else would we have had Monet and scores of others?

    • @markellinghaus5925

      @@slofty Most hard-core (wealthy) audiophiles who spend tens of thousands of dollars on their living room audio systems are absolutely trying to recreate the sound of real acoustic instruments playing in a real space - they are chasing total realism and will spend more on just the amplifier then most people spend on their cars. But not even the best speakers and amps and digital playback devices or high-end turntables can fully recreate the sound of a real good quality piano in your living room (though many can come pretty close.)

    • @mercury7912
      @mercury7912 Рік тому +1

       @slofty Finally someone who understands what is an audiophile (In my perspective also)!, i'm one and that's the persuit, not the realism per se, but the best interpretation of music with all the details possible, sounds that not even exist in real life and the mix in order to create an interpretation of the artist, so i totally agree with you :)

    I want to use this technology with a sequencer like Logic to record a real piano for the score for the movie. What is the dynamic range of the recording and how accurate is the reproduction of the recorded (or edited) dynamic sound? Can I record a note with midi dynamics from 1 to 127 and get those nuanced dynamics when I play it back?

      @@whome3911 there's more uses than just that. i've used one on a couple of albums i've produced where a studio i was working at repurposed one so that the keys player can record the piano with the band live in the room and then when everyone leaves, we just played that midi performance back to the exact same piano and record it in isolation. i was so sceptical to begin with but really saved me a lot. and yeh totally agree it's great for you. music equipment is how we use it right? like the 808 was sad as fuck because it was trying to replace a drummer but it was a flop and then musicians refound it and used it to great effect for hip hop and dance. just cuz we have both repurposed it, it doesnt mean the player piano isnt sad! it is designed for rich people to have music played to them without a smelly musician having to actually sit near them. i should recommend you an Omnichord by the way theyre really hand-mobility friendly and i personally love the sound, use it all the time in writing and also recording

      @@m.o.n.d.e.g.r.e.e.n Hey, do you mind sharing what kind of player piano you used for the project? I'm thinking about using it for a similar project and worried that the reproduction might not be accurate. I wonder if the disklavier and pnomation are similar in quality when it comes to accuracy of reproduction.
