The difference is technoly & production. Prince Buster, is definitely slower, but is aimed at a different generation. Madness layered sounds, & faster tempo. Growing up with Madness they will get my vote, but Prince Buster, deserves credit for being one of the original sounds of Jamaica.

Always Madness, if you have chance you should check out Ren and his music. his song Hi Ren is probably one of the biggest masterpieces I have ever heard also money game pt 3. Those videos are epic.
He has a brilliant catalogue of his music that you can easily get lost in.
He’s Welsh but recently has returned to the uk from Canada where he was having treatment.
There’s also a lot of great music from the band that he played with called The big Push but has also sung with other amazing artists.
He’s extremely happy for reactions and will help if any trouble comes your way if you post anything.
He’s a diamond and I have noticed anyone that reacts to him gets tons of followers and when he recommends music the artist does, skinner brothers went from under 4000 to over 6000 overnight.

Madness all the way for me. I still can’t understand how the U.K. Ska/Mod Revival scene didn’t make it in the commercial way in the US as it did in Europe. So many amazing bands and music. Loads of US bands and musicians found the music and were influenced by it, just never seemed to make it to the radio?
Check out Madness’s version of Must Be Love, the song was originally by Labi Siffre who appears in the madness video as one of the violin players at the end, he takes off his shades and smiles at the camera.
Mark Bedfords bass line on It Must Be Love is beautiful and understated but just makes the song for me.

It's either this song, or their verison of "Madness", that actually had Prince Buster saying he did actually think the Madness version was better. As it happens, this apparently was just a short intro they did at their gigs. It was only when they went to record the album that they and the producer decided to do it as a full song.

I was one of those kids in the early 80s… My parents came from Jamaica with the original 7 inch blue beat records in their suitcases. When our English friends came round and heard these tracks been played by my dad… Completely blew their minds. The members of madness grew up in this hot bed of multiculturalism in Birmingham and this is the basis of all their music.
Yes… The Madness version is fast and frenzied and quite exciting but we cannot deny the fact that Prince Buster is , As my dad always used to remind us, the perpetrator, the originator, and The instigator,

Madness recorded a Spanish language vocal that was used for the Spanish release of the single! Their version remains quite true to the original but personally i prefer the more organic sound of the Prince Buster version. Also worth a comparison is Prince Buster and Madness's version of Madness. The original version was aimed at Lee Perry who was another prolific producer at the time to which he retorted with a 45 called Mad Head. Rival producers/artists did this often in 60's Jamaica 😁

The original has two horns - there's the main horn with the melody and a high horn doing rhythmic ornaments. The bass, piano and guitars are all very low in the mix so only the horns, percussion and mouth noises are in the foreground. Madness only use one horn, but the have a much fuller sound from the guitars and keys. Plus they used reverb to fill out the sound. To be honest I wouldn't like to choose between them..
