"Eres tu" (1973) is one of the most famous Eurovision songs ever. They sold 1 million records in USA singing in Spanish, and there are more tan 100 versions in different languages around the world :)

I knew it sounded familar. I looked the song up and instantly recognized it once listening to the beginning. Starting in the middle of the song is what threw me off a bit.

22:22 In 2008 (Dance chiki chiki) the guy wasn´t a real singer, he was actually a comedian. Spanish national broadcaster opened a poll for people to choose who should go to Eurovision that year among several candidates. One of them was this famous comedian in Spain who wanted to make fun of the contest, many many people decided to participate in the joke and voted him to participate in the contest. He was basically trolling everybody. That was the last time they let the general public to choose the candidate. 😁
The funny part is that he finished 16 which is much better than other professional singers that have tried after him.

Hi Kev! As a spanish I just wanted to point out something. There is a singing style here in Spain which is closely conected with flamenco genre. In that style (u can see it clearly in our last entry, 2023) the singer has a particular way to sing so the foreigners (and also for some spanish people too) can't connect with that easily. I suggest u to hear the whole Blanca's performance (2023) and try to connect with it, but I can understand that for many people it can be "horrible". Great video, thanks for having this time to react to spanish entries in ESC, spanish fans thank u :)

Some important info to know. Spain is part of the BIG 5, a group of 5 countries that directly qualify to the final. The other countries are Germany, United Kingdom, France and Italy. The reason to the existence of this group is because they are the countries that invest more money to support the contest.

Throughout the years Spain has been consistently sending "spanish looking" entries, and despite having a lot of what eurovision calls classics and spanish essence, after most of eastern europe countries joined the competition, ESC, instead of eurovision song contest, stands for eurovision "sympathy" contest. A lot of eurofans say that Spain has been mistreated many years, along with other members of the big 5 (except Italy for some reason). Also, the second year we ended 1st, it was actually a tie between us and 3 other entries, the Netherlands, France and UK.
Thx from Spain for your reaction, its actually nice to see opinions from the other side of the pond 😊

11:06 Semi finals were only introduced in 2004. Before that you see like 20 countries taking part, after like 40 countries. However each year UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy automatically qualify. That is because they pay more than other countries. But also because of the viewing numbers, these countries have a lot of people. If they do not make it to the final, they will miss millions of viewers from these countries. Normally around 180 million people watch the final.

5:14 Julio Iglesias is Enrique Igelsias dad! Joining the national final of Spain in 1968 actually launched his music career. And two years later he would be on the eurovision stage as you can see. A couple of years after eurovision he moved to the USA to start his career over there. He has had several Billboard Hot 10 hits in the eighties and nineties.

Since 2022, it seems like the national broadcaster (RTVE) is taking Eurovision more seriously. They now have their own national final show with great songs and performers. They stated that they want to win asap, so we'll see how that goes.

The clip chosen for the 2023 one didn't catch the vibe of the hole performance very well. Probably that's the reason why professional juries put them in 9th place while the televoters put them at the bottom, cause it is and adquired taste (for the most people that like it I mean).

Since 2004 when the semi finals started and a lot of new countries joined, Spain has been part of the big 5 as others have said. This means they get a free pass to the final and as a result they are up against songs that have already beaten other songs to get there while their song hasn’t had to do that. That’s why they have gotten a lot of lower placings since 2004.
Also the reason Spain didn’t start singing in English when they allowed it is that Spain is one of those countries like France, Portugal and Italy that like to preserve their culture and try to showcase their language wherever they can.

09:09 Nowadays you have to be atleast 16 years old to be on the eurovision stage. After this song and Belgium 1986, they changed the rules. In 2004 they created Junior Eurovision for kids aged 6 to 14 years old, held in november this year.

Not always the countries want to win. Winning comes with the responsibility to host next year contest, when a country is not doing that well economicly, they can choose to present something wafull enough to not win for sure (but sometimes they recive points just because others want to see the world burning)

Jeez, you're hard to please. Now seriously, Spain doesn't have the best record at Eurovision. Some songs truly deserved the low position ('Do it for your lover' lives rent free in my nightmares) but, as a Spanish, whenever I talk to other europeans and the topic of Eurovision comes up I constantly get told how songs such as 'Quédate conmigo', 'La venda' or 'Eaea' deserved better (I recommend watching the full perfonmances of those). What's the problem? We don't really now, but we're on the path of recovering. Our broadcaster is taking the constest more seriously now, so fingers crossed for this year.

To say that Blanca Paloma doesn't have good voice it's like say you don't know anything about singing. I'm a singer an She is literraly perfect in the execution.

    • @bigkevreacts
      @bigkevreacts  8 місяців тому

You can perfectly execute a song and have someone not personally like the sound of their voice. Everyone has a popular bands they dislike with great singers behind them. It's about personal preference 😀

Why do some of the songs end up doing poorly?... Well.. In early 2000's.. UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy (BIG 5) realized they were having problems and got tired of not winning.. So they up and decided that if they make the excuse that they pay a little more money than everyone else.. Then their song autoqualifies to the final.. This has not sat well with people and juries of the countries who have to qualify to get to the final.. Especially the ones who technically have a good song.. Should have made the final.. But it's spot is already taken by a bad or at best mediocre song and artist because mommy and daddy paid money that the poorer countries can't afford.. So people outside will rarely vote for BIG 5 songs... This is Europe.. Half the countries are socialist and don't buy capitalist bullshit arguments that money should curry favors.
